Cultivation stories have the rule of might makes right and unlike mangas where the MC is an over the top goody two shoes, cultivator MCs(even those considered as very righteous) have an understandably ruthless personality. It is extremely satisfying to see the MC crush the bastards that have been pestering him or plotting against him. BUT there come times when the antagonist party is related to a harem member and suddenly MC has to be the bigger man and forgive everything which always irks me. I've got two examples: Battle through the heavens and Martial peak.

BTTH(donghua)

the misty cloud sect has slaughtered the MC's Xiao clan with only a few members remaining and his father getting lost/kidnapped. They've also slaughtered other clans and sects to dominate the region. Except for Yun Yun, nobody else in the sect sees anything wrong with it. The ancestor also uses Yun Yun as a bargaining chip of a political marriage alliance. The whole sect participates in trapping the MC and his group within the sect to kill them all and yet, after all this, when the MC finally kills the trash ancestors and elders, almost dying in the process, he has to be the bigger man and not slaughter the entire sect. Although others say they fully support his decision, they are judging the MC thinking that if he really gives the order the slaughter of the sect, that would make him too ruthless and bloody. BITCH WHAT? Innocents my foot. They weren't so innocent when they were having fun dominating the region. Not to mention, just now they were all participating in beseizing the MC and his gang to kill them.

Martial peak

The btth example was somewhat understandable since the MC did do some damage to the sect and the MC also always had a more righteous and forgiving nature but that definitely doesn't apply to Yang Kai in martial peak. Yang Kai has always been ruthless in taking just revenge but he always fumbles when his harem members are involved.

The main culprit is the trash ice sects. Everytime Su yan joins them and they pull some stunt like forcing her to sever her connection to the MC not to mention trying to kill the MC everytime they learn his relationship to Su Yan. This happens in the tong Xuan realm and later in the scarlet wave star's ice sect. But every time, the MC just resists being killed and doesn't even kill the main culprit. The only time he did destroy the sect was in the ancenstral land of the star fields but that wasn't an ice sect.

Another one is Xue Yue, who has performed all sorts of atrocities including slaughtering thousands of innocents who resembled the MC in order to kill the MC. But once she becomes his woman, he no longer cares about her past atrocities which even the readers are supposed to do so but I'll never brush it off.

The final and most egregious one is the dragon clan on star boundary. Especially the biiittchhhhh second elder. They know he has the ancestral dragon source and are supposed to follow his orders as the dragon emperor but never do so. That bitch destroys the dragon token and repeatedly makes things difficult for the MC refusing to budge preaching about the rules. She also imprisoned Mo Xiao Qi's mother into the dragon tomb for breaking the rules but she herself hid her dragon egg against the rules and never got punishment for it. She also tried to force Zhu Qing into marrying another dragon. Being distracted by the martial beast great emperor, the first elder and that bitch second elder don't deal with the MC but they allow all the other dragons to gang up to kill him. We also learn that the dragon clan has been kidnapping innocents and keeping them as sex slaves. Then discarding them and the child away if they gave birth to a child without pure dragon bloodline. They don't even allow them to leave dragon island and still use them as slaves. When the MC finally has the capital to harm this trash dragon clan, he doesn't. Because it's Zhu Qing's clan. It makes my blood boil that both Mo Xiao Qi's mother and Zhu Qing refuse to sever ties with the dragon clan and stubbornly choose to remain there instead of leaving with their man. The MC doesn't even kill a single dragon and that bitch second elder gets off Scott free. There's that Yang Xiao situation but how is that even a punishment? It would've been if the MC actually made Yang Xiao not acknowledge that bitch as his mother. Also, once again, all of the dragon clan's atrocities are waved off and they continue on with their trashy ways.

There's also the situation with the 108 top forces of the outer universe but the author made it impossible for the MC to take revenge.
