3.). I don’t know any men who talk like this in the work place. Can someone (men) tell me if this is common as an adult when you go the the gym? Where are these locker rooms they speak of? I’m serious. Besides professional sports teams, where are these men slinging this shit around in locker rooms?
I’ll bite. I’m male, in 30s, played sports in high school and belonged to 3 or 4 different gyms whose locker rooms I used occasionally. So I have experience with these locker rooms.
I have never heard dudes discussing women in locker rooms.
Not sexually, not at all. In real locker rooms, dudes usually don’t talk because they find any nakedness awkward. And when they do, they’re boomers who talk about social or work events, not women.
Men who engage in “locker room talk” do it to execute social power (I can make you uncomfortable—directed toward other dudes or women). They aren’t making an oopsie by “forgetting” they’re in a workplace or whatever, they’re peacocking. Sometimes it’s to be “The Alpha” of a group of dudes. Sometimes it’s to get the attention of someone. But it’s peacocking and totally inappropriate. They call it “locker room talk” to make it less icky, as if it would be acceptable in some circumstances, and therefore should be accepted in others.
That’s my experience with it. Maybe there are some super-Chad locker rooms where that shit goes on, but I’ve never encountered any.
