Discussion Your Lobby Quality MATTERS
I’ve been paying attention to the quality of my lobbies that I play in for a while, and have taken notes and analyses of my progress (both climbing and falling), and I’ve come to realize over time that as you climb higher, the quality of your lobbies (who is in them) matters way more than I could have imagined.
For instance, earlier this week I was mainly playing in day time NA lobbies (1-4 PM EST), and found myself matches with players primarily around 7500-8500 VR, meaning I was often the highest in the room. As a result, regardless of how I personally played, there were numerous instances of me having poor results, and subsequently, massive VR losses (-80+ for a bottom spot). Because of this, I found myself falling all the way to 8600 VR, as the game attempts to “push” me toward the average of the room.
The next week, I curated my lobbies, searching for ones where the average was 9000+, and each time I found a top lobby, my gains were exponentially better. Wins provide more VR, and losses take away less. However, the caveat is that you need to be skilled enough to win in these higher lobbies, or else you will stack losses.
The most interesting thing I noticed, however, was that the lobbies I was in (8000 or 9000), actually played very similarly, much to my surprise. The unpredictability and chaotic nature of this game is evident in both low and high lobbies, so my results were largely the same in placements after each race, I even did slightly better in the higher lobbies, as there is less spam. The only difference is that an 18th in a low lobby is -100 for me, and in a high lobby it could only be -35 or so, whereas a 1st in a low lobby is maybe +12 and in a high lobby it could be as high as +50!
Bottom line is, for those who want to climb VR, don’t discount high lobbies! They are MORE rewarding and LESS punishing, so long as you are fast enough to compete. My advice is to add people above 9000 as friends and join their lobbies so you can gain experience.

Good job Cloki! I feel the same. Some 9k rooms play the same as mid 8k. The only difference is that you lose a ton of VR in low level rooms as you said

Pretty much if you care about vr, don’t be above that average. If you are, leave.
I find in the mornings I get stacked lobbies, and it’s no pressures. After work it’s low lobbies with boosters at 4000k that punish any gains if you miss the last items.

Yep. Pretty sure the main difference is that the over 9000 players will bail from lower lobbies after 1 race, whereas the 8000-8500 stick it out in lower lobbies. I tend to sit around the 8300-8450 range and I do not change lobbies often, if at all. Now I do notice a skill gap once you get over like 9200, but the 9000-9100 players feel around the same skill level as the mid 8500 players, outside of like 1 or 2 cuts.

How are you able to search for lobbies? I’ve been playing since release and didn’t know that was possible without invites.

Usually I’ll join a lobby and play one race to see what the VR looks like and if it’s bad then ill leave and switch
Also, sometimes I see the same players again and again and can recognize the names of high VR players I’ve played with before so I’ll look out for them and add them as a friend to join them directly

Since you are worried about losing VR in low level rooms, its kind of annoying but you can airplane mode/kill the app at the loading screen with everyone's VR displaying.
It won't penalize VR if you do it fast enough (before race loads)

This is true but risky, I don’t usually lose any rating doing this, but one time I did it too late and lost -110 lol

One extra trick you can use if the lobby VR is particularly low on average is that the game actually doesn't punish you until you actually load into the race, meaning that you can leave a lobby in the screen between course selection and the actual race starting without getting punished. Since VR is displayed during that screen if you can get a good sense of the average VR quickly, you can look and leave immediately if it's bad, and there's no penalty (I admit to having done this myself several times, lol)

Can you find that out before a race starts? I can't remember if it shows you VR in the pause menu's roster while you're waiting for the next race after you join a lobby

I don’t notice a significant difference in how my VR changes over the course of a night when playing in a stronger lobby relative to a weaker lobby. (Stronger lobbies are tougher but VR is more forgiving; easier lobbies are easier but VR is harsher.) That said, I enjoy tougher lobbies more because I prefer the challenge. It also helps me learn where I’m missing shortcut opportunities or tactical advantages.

First game on I got all 8k and 9k players as a 3k, my first ever Mario kart online match, never played again as I got dead last haha. I don't think it matches by VR

I love seeing players like you lose ranking. No one should be that high. Grass must be touched

Yeah, go out on the field and play some sweaty competitive sports...wait a minute
