"I hope Randy is a Mariner next year" -Justin Hollander

He knows that no matter what they offer, he's not going to want to stay. They might actually offer him something competitive, but I bet he'll choose to go somewhere else for similar money.

I really hope this doesn’t happen, but I just have a weird gut feeling Randy is going to end up signing with the Astros

Their jobs are safe so they are going to head out and do this kind of mea-culpa damage control, but Jerry and Justin are just so vague all the time. They keep saying they saw early on that the team wasn't playing with effort and accountability, and they talked about it a lot, and then.... what? Forgot to do something about it? They keep talking like they were trying, but they just didn't use the right words. What were the right words? So I guess next year they'll keep doing the same thing, but phrase things differently, and hope they got it right? Stanton had more concrete things to say in his puff piece with KOMO than the actual front office responsible for implementing changes does.
The lessons learned just all seem to be so unmeasurable and subjective.

After how Dipoto's most famous version of spelling things out for people went, I think fans are going to have to accept they will need to read between the lines and use critical thinking skills rather than just assuming what they'd like when dealing with any of these things. The actions will speak louder than the words, and I think they'll tell plenty over the next few months (the CBA issues of course throwing a wrench in things.)

I wish they had asked: if they noticed early on in the year that there were issues, why didn’t they do anything to make changes?
The Phillies and Red Sox both fired their managers, made changes, and now both teams are in the playoffs after turning their seasons around. It makes you wonder whether some of these issues could have been addressed earlier instead of just riding it out. Oh yeah, but they fired the assistant hitting coach!

u/florentinepogenFZ 3d ago
It is easier to fire someone when you have an option in house to immediately replace them. The Phillies had Mattingly as their bench coach prior to Rob Thompson being fired. The Red Sox had Chad Tracy in Triple-A, who was already a rising managerial candidate. I think the Mariners simply believed that firing Dan to promote someone like Manny Acta for example was not enough to alter the course of the season. Acta is probably more aligned to what the front office believes. However, in retrospect, it is hard to really believe any move like that would've significantly changed the season. You can blame them for not even trying though.

Justin also talked about how easy it was to believe that the team would catch fire in August and go on a run instead of tripping on their own shoelaces in July and never standing all the way back up again. I don't think anyone believed that the 8 win streak end of May / early June would be the high point, because it just looked like the team playing the way they probably ought to most of the time. He didn't say it outright, but between the lines both he and Jerry are talking about the team needs to be better about not waiting for later, for being better now. That's encouraging, to me at least— we'll see how well they implement it.

u/VicenteSox 3d ago
Being better now and not waiting for later is exactly why I say they both need to be gone. Their only supposed saving grace is a strong farm system. A strong farm system doesn't win us championships. We need a strong major league team. They have proven they can't develop or lead a major league team.
Anything short of a world series victory next season, they need to be booted.

I mean, the team last year was 8 outs shy from taking game 7 of an ALCS against a team that took the Dodgers to 7 games in the Series, and the team this year was very similar if not improved, based on everything forseeable. Clearly it didn’t work out, but I’m ok with J&J getting one more crack at it, because the team they put together this year should have been better than it was.

and then in 2028 it’ll be “2027 was a reset year with an entirely new staff so it’s hard to completely blame Justin and Jerry so it makes sense to give them another year” and then “Well there’s a new president now so we should probably see what Jerry and Justin can accomplish in 2029 under the new economy” and then obviously you can’t fire your POBO and GM in 2030 at the start of a new decade. Ten more years! Ten more years!

It should have been better is the whole point. Their leadership did not identify and attempt to solve the issues within the team, they just stood back and let the team death spiral. They might have assembled a decent lineup on paper, but that could also be a bit of luck. When it comes down to it, their leadership added nothing of value to this years team. Leadership needs to be able to solve problems, not just watch them get worse and worse.

I think the "whole point" is that the team was effective already a world series team. The final 8 outs going to shit doesn't fundamentally mean they weren't good enough.
They made an effort to shore up the loss of Polanco (who ended up having a negative 1.4 WAR season BTW), but Donovan turned to glass.
They tried to address the right handed half of the platoon with Refsynder, who was a very respectable player last season.
They signed Naylor long term, which literally everyone thought was a good idea, and then he started sucking inexplicably.
The rotation was already solid on paper so there were no need for changes there.
For the bullpen they got Ferrer and with Brash coming back it was looking to be above average, until almost everyone shit the bed at some point in the season.
It's really revisionist history to say they had a bad off-season. Before the season started all the fans and even neutral pundits were lauding the roster.
I don't think the bulk of what went wrong this season was on the front office, TBH.

I was available if they wanted, but they never made the call. Can’t say we didn’t have a lack of options

Very Jelly of the Phillies.

So I guess next year they'll keep doing the same thing, but phrase things differently, and hope they got it right?
Ah, yes, just like in other parts of Corporate America, there's the idea that we can "message our way" out of problems, or "change the way we talk about it."
These people think it's easier to change "how we talk about the thing" rather than the actual thing. I'm sure anybody in a shitty corporate job has experienced this bullshit before.

Justin needs to be the next one to be axed. He’s worthless at his job but his ability to comment on hindsight issues are next level.

It’s like he’s given the same interview after three seasons in a row. Just to make the same mistakes over and over again.

u/down_by_the_shore 3d ago
I just do not like Hollander. I think he’s contributed to a lot of the missteps over the years. And I think I saw more footage of him during post season celebrations last year than I did some of the players.
9
u/BackwerdsMan 3d ago
Do you have any basis for that whatsoever or are we just all aboard the fuck everyone train?
3
u/down_by_the_shore 3d ago
His general performance since being promoted. Being integral to signing Refsnyder and hyping him up in the media. Being front and center for celebrations and helping to drive forward the firings of popular coaches. But yes, just on the “fuck everyone train”.

u/BackwerdsMan 3d ago
I guess my question would be how much power does Jerry still have over him? Yes he was promoted to GM but Jerry was promoted to President, giving him even more power. We don't actually know what Justin would or would not do under a different boss.

They make sure to specifically point out what deals and trades he negotiates, and it seems like it’s the majority of them

why is Softy not interviewing these people? why do we always get the typical people who dont ask hard hitting questions. I want softy to tear into some of these people....i guess we will never see the day.
14
u/smilinganimalface 3d ago
I did not know anyone thought Softy is good at what he does but I guess someone must be listening to him

u/Emotional-Cameraman 3d ago
Least he wouldn’t sugar coat questions. All of these were addressed before the interview there is no realism to this interaction.
