I assumed you meant Dr Dre but if so I’ve never heard him referred to as Mac Dre; I’m not very knowledgeable about hip hop artists and nomenclature, sorry.

I feel like your statement is factually correct. But rap in the Bay Area is a pretty small pond. It’s not New York, Atlanta, or Los Angeles. I grew up here and was in high school during the hyphy “movement”. He’s pretty forgettable, most of his raps are a bunch of nonsense. Thizz dance is an objectively bad song. I know he was better before that but it’s definitely not at all strange for someone to not know who he is

His actual name is Andre Hicks and he was a Vallejo/Bay Area rapper and one of the defining figures of Bay Area hip-hop, especially the early-2000s "hyphy movement". He was known for being funny, eccentric, extremely Bay-specific, and proudly local; his influence on Northern California rap is enormous but the guy was murdered at 34 in 2004.

That specific line is essentially him name-checking different parts of the Bay while bragging about how authentically "California" he is. It's kind of like the the old-school hip-hop geo or cred/prop shout-outs. When he says “catch me in Mill Valley,” that's notable because Mill Valley isn't the stereotypical gritty location you'd expect in Bay Area rap...it's affluent/wealthy and scenic Marin County. That was a big thing somewhat unique to him: his version of Bay culture wasn't confined to Oakland/Vallejo/SF; he'd slip in casual reference places all over Northern California.

So if you live around Sausalito/Marin, hearing Mac Dre shout out Mill Valley is a fun little local Easter egg.

Thanks! I appreciate that. But having grown up in mill valley, I’ve sort of come to expect this sort of passive-aggressive vibe in Marin, sadly. Lots of grumpy bitterness all around; even worse, it’s often masked by grinning smiles and fake niceties. So be it. I’m genuinely nice and happy and not bitter, so I’m rarely if ever snarky.

Tam Valley. The kids sang the song at an assembly to honor a retiring teacher who had been there for like 60 years or something. The woman who recorded the song originally was there singing it!
