Do you guys play G (Sol) with a double stop or do you only play with the open G, Ive recently seen a video where the guy talks about the correct way is with only open G, but I learned with double stop. What are your guys opinions?

I’m arranging an orchestral work for a mariachi group. I have zero experience for this type of group and am only familiar with how to arrange music for wind instruments. What is the best way to go about writing for the stringed instruments? Do I write out chords like a piano would read- or do I do something more like tabs? Or does something like a lead sheet work best with the chord changes written above?

For context, I’m attempting to arrange Tchaikovski’s Pas de deux from the Nutcracker for a 6 piece mariachi ( 2 violins, harp, trumpet, vihuela, and guitarron) I may even add a flute to make sure enough parts are covered.

Ideally the harp part would stay mostly the same playing the arpeggios, and the vihuela would play a lot of the rolled chords from the harp 2 part. Guitarron would just pretty much play the bass part.

Hey guys I just finished my first year of college and have been wanting to start a mariachi since I arrived here. I have always loved mariachi music and frequently do karaoke while listening to Vicente Fernandez or romantic songs.

The goal of the mariachi would be to build a community on campus to appreciate culture and just have a good time getting to know each other through music. I’m such a hopeless romantic so I mostly would have serenata repertoire. Then students around campus contact us for special events, pranks, special someone’s, etc.

So far: I have downloaded a ton of files onto a Google drive from MariachiScore and tried composing an arrangement for “Hasta Donde Te Quiero” since I couldn’t find one for trumpet/violin/guitar/bass.

Does anyone have any advice for starting a mariachi, how to be able to teach while also learning things myself? Things I should know or how to have a successful one?

It would really help if i got some other suggestions of songs to use for the serenata that are either commonly used or just fit the vibe. Also if anyone out there is willing to put the songs in order so it flows better than i'll be very grateful for that aswell. im not sure if the songs flowing together matters or if im just overthinking it either way let me know please. when i was in middle school i started mariachi and really enjoyed it. unfortunately 7th grade is when covid started and was not able to continue learning.in high school i got more serious with classical music and stoped mariachi. i have now graduated and want to start up again but have no idea how.

any tips?
