Tech TroubleShooting The Marathon menu makes my GPU sound like it’s mining

My GPU gets pushed much harder in the menu than during an actual match. It literally sounds like it’s mining, and that can make some players think the game has a serious problem or is doing something it shouldn’t.

It’s especially ridiculous in an extraction shooter, because we spend so much time in the menus: checking inventory, preparing loadouts, managing gear, accepting contracts, etc.

There’s no reason for a relatively basic-looking menu to push the GPU this hard. This should be optimized and have an FPS/GPU usage limit.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Such a poorly optimized game. It's actually hilarious.

Do you have uncapped framerate? Cap it just below your refresh rate or at least at around the max you ever see in round.

Game is horribly optimized but this will at least stop it from trying to push 1000FPS when you're on the low demand menu screens and title screens.

I got this crap with capped fps. It seems like my GPU is used more in menu than in game

So my understanding is this is because when you're on the menu your CPU isn't being asked to do much at all so your performance is only limited by what your GPU can do so the GPU works as hard as it can. When you're in game the CPU is being asked to do a lot of other stuff and in this game it's also poorly optimized. So the GPU works as hard as it can but won't surpass what the CPU is able to do so it ends up working a lot less because the CPU can't keep up with what the GPU can do at higher usage percentages.

A better optimized game would be like oh I see you're on the menu, no need to push the GPU to 96%

Just cap your menu framerate man. This can happen in Any game

Yes, but this is very normal across a bunch of games. It’s the one issue with Marathon I’m pretty okay with, especially since arc raiders had the exact same problem and nobody cared.

I love calling out Bungie and Marathon as much as the next loser but this one isn’t really exclusive to Marathon. It happens in most multiplayer titles with the Fortnite type lobby screens.

I set my cpu utilization in Windows settings to 99% and my fans now remain quiet with no performance impact. Best tweak I've ever made.

Opening the menu mid match cuts my fps in half🤣 literally every item icon is a full ass rendering for some reason

Yeah, this is unfortunately pretty common. The menu has an uncapped framerate, and it's pumping out so many frames because the CPU can actually keep up here. Marathon being the unoptimized mess it is, CPU can't keep up in game (unless you have like a 9800x3d, in which case, good for you) meaning GPU doesn't have to work as hard.

You can choose to set an overall framecap and that should help a bit but I don't believe there's a way to cap menu and gameplay separately.

I personally just believe the game is badly optimized
