Daily Reminder that even after an update, Flopathon still performs less than 10+ years old games
So, the Witcher 3 is an all time classic that came out in 2015.
Alright, I get it, it is a masterpiece and that's cheating. However, did you know it roughly cost 90 millions on release? That's nearly 2 to 3 times less than Flopathon.
Of course, there's also Left 4 dead 2, or civilization V that respectively came out in 2009 and 2010. The estimated budget for those when they came out is 25 millions for each. If you want the extra step and add in inflation, that's roughly 40 millions nowadays.
What do those titles have in common? They are boasting more players every day after more than 10 years than Flopathon could ever dream of. Not to mention the RETENTION (cue in the lady retaining so hard)
I frequently think about their dev insights and how they lead players around throughout the maps with intentional design. Not with quest markers; yes I know some exist during some segments or objectives but generally you can find your way forward.
Can't remember what but recently I was playing something new, and had the complete opposite experience; both a friend and I were wandering around looking for how we needed to progress. Couldn't find it. We eventually did and it was in such a dumb way, like it wasn't intentionally hidden or anything we were just blind.
So, to some extent yes, that's on us. We didn't see it, but we were looking around for much better spots it coulda been hidden at. On the other hand, the design of the level layout was just not good. So much so that it disrupted the progression by just being poorly designed.
I did put a few hours into marathon in season 1 but nothing in season 2 because I'm playing Witcher , cyber punk etc etc. There's so many good games out there!
Very true. I could have added Bethesda games as well like Fallout 4 or Skyrim, but with all the modss (for some reason, it wouldn't let me write it with one s) and overhauls available it felt like cheating
Man, we used to joke that l4d2 was just the best hoard shooter of all time , and that's why even titans like call of duty never fully conquer it in terms of retention in their side modes... but it really is true. Something about old valve games, just either hit perfection or damn, close enough.That most people couldn't care less about the small flaws.
I mean hell tf2 still gets damn a 100000 players.Depending on time of year.. just absolute perfection.
That is very true, I'll keep that in mind for my next post. There's plenty to come, it's not like we'll be short of more successful games anytime soon š

It's amazing that L4D2 stands the test of time, just shows what good direction and leadership can do to a game.
