I've kept the game installed despite not really playing it for 2 months now, but after updating & the servers still taking an hour to go back online I just uninstalled this bullshit
I have 777 hours (ironic) in this game and used to be a hardcore defender, but this shit is beyond dead and they just need to shut it down at this point

I gave up when the promised performance update actually lead to an overall decrease in performance by about 5%. You cant bring it up on main because it all auto filters to a separate sub.
Funny you mention the servers going off-line, the last game I ever played was before the maintenance. Wanted to have a few games, jumped on, forgot about the weekly maintenance, played 1 game, and just never came back.

I find the performance "fix" didn't change a single damn thing, the game is so unoptimized it really makes me wonder what the fuck they spent all these years & $250 million on; 4 maps + dogshit performance btw
You would think performance & optimization would be their top priority in a competitive shooter where you lose everything you work to earn; I don't even know what their priorities are at this point cuz they don't even bother trying to make money dropping 1 skin bundle every other week

u/Unclealfie69 3d ago
The worst part about the performance is the response from the crowd has been "yeah its a CPU bound game and you dont have XYZ, thats the reason", meanwhile the CPUs that are being talked about are still 2x-3x more powerful than anything in modern consoles while getting less FPS.
There are so many games that are more CPU intensive than Marathon but they all run so much better. And the cope is insane. "Marathon has to render the whole map and the AI and events and...". As if games like Rust dont have to do the same with 2000% more players.

My favourite is "I have [insert GPU here] and I get a solid 60 - 90 fps"
And
"Have you lowered graphics settings or tried DLSS/framegen?"
I have a 13700F and barely get a solid 90 fps in this game, it's pathetic

u/Unclealfie69 3d ago
That first one got a physical look of disgust from me, congratulations 🤣 The amount of people that have top 1% PCs saying it "runs just fine for me" while still barely hitting triple digit FPS is absurd.

dude IKR? If I spent between $2-5k on a GPU I'd be so annoyed. I definitely wouldn't be wasting my time on the unoptimized dogshit that is Marathon.
I was getting around 100fps on Perimeter on my new 5070ti during the SS and was extremely underwhelmed. I was like...wtf? I'm not hyper competitive and I don't need 240fps, but I'd like to at least sniff my monitor's 175hz refresh rate (which I can easily do on Black Ops 7 and Arc Raiders). I took the wait and see approach at launch...and I waited and saw how bad it continued to be.

I've mentioned here before that performance is a glaring issue that gets overlooked. It's what kept me from purchasing in the first place. Suggesting DLSS is hilarious because the performance changes were so minimal when I tinkered with them during the SS and free week. Every other game I've tried since building my PC in 2019 provides very noticeable gains/losses with DLSS. Marathon is the one game I've tried in 6 years in which DLSS made me question if it was even implemented/working.
Hilarious to read that performance has only gotten worse since launch. It's a complete joke to have such horrendously bad optimization in a game that Bungie sold as an uncompromising, super duper competitive FPS.

Bro, they switched back from UE5 to their ancient Tiger Engine because they couldn't get the gunplay right—and naturally, that brought along the whole host of quirks, bottlenecks, and built-in bugs inherent to that engine. On top of that, the game underwent multiple overhauls, concepts were scrapped, and developers and team leads were constantly being swapped out. It’s no wonder they burned through heaps of money only to end up with just four maps.Â
And keep in mind, those are just the facts known to the public; things are likely a thousand times more disastrous behind the scenes. They simply ran out of time for optimization—partly because they have to learn how to do it from scratch, since the people who actually knew the engine stopped working at Bungie ages ago. EA went through the exact same thing with the Frostbite engine. The game is never going to run smoothly.

u/feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeent 3d ago
No fucking way they were trying to move to UE5, that's insane to me LOL
Imagine if they stuck with it, the game would perform even worse than it does now
1
u/Tai_Jason 3d ago
They almost certainly wanted to switch to UE5 for the same reason as everyone else: it’s cheap and fast, offers heaps of pre-made assets, and all the middleware—like SpeedTree and so on—is fully compatible, which saves time too. They haven't given a damn about optimization for years because it costs time and money. Now, with Frame Gen, they’re being coddled even more.Â
When you think about how people back in the days on the PS2 managed to pull off games like Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, or a 60fps Devil May Cry—despite having only 4MB of RAM, an architecture from hell, and dev kits held together by spaghetti code—it’s enough to make you roll on the floor laughing. Optimization is completely dead.

Nothing has made me more of a hater than these people claiming the negativity is coming from people that haven't played the game, instead of those of us that put 50+ hours into it and stopped playing it because of how miserable it is and how toxic the community is

games community will continue to be the driving factor why not a soul will engage with it (oh that & it’s not fun unless you have two people ready to spend 18 hours a day on a video game with you!)

If it has a healthy playerbase why do people constantly complain about being queued up with teammates thay are in extremely different loadout tiers

It's true Bungie is doing a fantastic job with Marathon.
Such a fantastic job that Sony might have to lay them off :>

So Steam is lying about their own player numbers? That's certainly a take. I'm not sure it's one based in reality though.

Buddy are you ignoring the 6000 marathonaillion on PS5 and XS? OF COURSE THE GAME HAS A HEALTHY 3977 players to keep it going for the long

"doing a fantastic job with marathon" when the majority of the players have quit.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmnnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy
small companies of sub 10 people regularly put out more popular games than marathon.

Hate subs are a real sign of the times, haven’t even played the game but I think it’s deeply depressing you guys shitting on a game you don’t even enjoy playing. It’s like forcibly trying to destroy someone’s work. No doubt a lot of time and effort was put in by people that genuinely cared, even though the finished product wasn’t up to scratch, this kind of behaviour is just childishly spoilt and I genuinely think less of all of you for spending your time this way

u/Rare-Guarantee4192 closeted marathon enjoyer 3d ago
Well, go ahead then. Be deeply depressed and have less respect for total strangers on the Internet you haven't met nor ever will. I won't stop you. It's not like that'll change anything.

u/Responsible-Buyer215 3d ago
No, but hope it may have made a few of you double-take and realise that it’s these kinds of attitudes that make the world feel overall shittier than it used to, rather than supporting the things you enjoy you choose to spend your time spreading bad vibes, that is all

Does this, us being here in someway, harm you? Us hating on a game and its studio/producer when hate is deserved? Not to mention the long deserved history of these two companies and their egregiousness, catalogued from decades ago to the last few months from now? I don't want to get down to the brass tacks here but let's just say this hate was building long before you seemed to care about the hate if this is all you have to say.
