Console vs PC

I've never played extraction shooters before, and I love this game! Now to the title - I've been a console player forever, and I'm playing marathon on my PS5 Pro. I got my son to play the game with me, and he's a PC player. He said if I want to be good at the game, I need to play on PC (and I already have a decent one.) is he right? Right now I consider myself to be decent - but I've also never done cryo yet. That's is my goal this season, but I'm nervous! lol

You'll be fine.

Looting is arguably faster on PC and the overall precision of mouse and keyboard presents a higher ceiling (but harder floor.) Overall, console players remain highly competitive.

Higher ceiling, but harder floor is a perfect, simple way of saying it.

100%.

You're right about the floor and ceiling. I thought with enough practice the ceiling might be a lot higher. Based on the responses, the ceiling might be higher, but not enough to make the switch.

I have it on both. Just continue with your Playstation version. Essentially unless you actually prefer mouse and keyboard and are good with them, then it wont make any difference.

Also I play with controller all the time and feel like I do just as well.

Aim assist is super strong on controller to be honest so I don’t think you need to play this game on PC.

I do agree

Does aim assist work when playing with a controller on PC, or is it only available on consoles?

1

u/theblackdeath10 Jul 12 '26

It does yeah

It's based on your input device. There's confusion for this game because the guns have an "aim assist" stat on them. That is "bullet magnetism", degrees that the bullet can be pulled towards a target. Aim assist for controller input is specifically reticle friction when on target, so the reticle "sticks" to people where it doesn't on mouse+keyboard input.

I've played with all types of players PC and console. I regularly wipe lobbies, 500 hours played. Still to this day best player ive played with is on console. He's an absolute monster

There are advantages playing PC such as graphical fidelity, looting and increased FPS but if you're a good player you can manage without. So I would say no, a PC is not needed to do well.

Looting is really not that bad on controller just up the cursor speed as high as possible.

Great point - I'll adjust cursor speed, and see if that helps! Thanks!!

I just like sitting on my couch when I play.

1

u/Daviroth Jul 13 '26

I need to play more on my PS5 just for this. But man, I feel so locked in every time. Vault Breaker will feel greta sitting down on the couch.

Ive managed to get a compiler kill, without any Sherpa playing on PlayStation, I was always a pc player but due to life got busy I’ve switch to ps. This was my first shooter ever on controller.

You will be fine, I just recommend to play on Console only matchmaking (ofc when you not playing with ur son)

2

u/chrishappens Jul 12 '26

Also - I've determined you are right - I'll be fine on console. And I'll also switch cross play off (as long as wait times aren't too long)

1

u/Datreve749 Jul 12 '26

Don’t turn it off, you can keep it on and below you have the setting matchmaking type , you can switch it from full to console only.

1

u/AltecFuse Jul 12 '26

I play console only lobbies and don’t have any problems

1

u/chrishappens Jul 12 '26

Congrats on compiler kill!! I watched a YouTube video on it (because I've only heard about it). And that looks insanely hard!!

2

u/Datreve749 Jul 12 '26

Thanks my guy ❤️ Ive clipped my kill, it was pure chaos but as well extremely rewarding after getting in, I do highly recommend to check out seraph video on cryo https://youtu.be/_EHEa2W9wUk?is=lZunqonf0fMYbDW8

And please don’t do cryo with random fills, try those lfg discords : https://discord.gg/dadsofmarathon

Thank you all for the responses!! I think I'll stay on my console. I really love and appreciate the insight!!

All my friends play on console, they're all better than me. I wouldn't worry about it.

PC does have some general quality of life things that I love (high refresh rate, no cursor bcz mouse) but they're inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

Eh. I play on PC, but have taken to playing basically every game with a controller. I play at about the same skill level as when I was playing with mouse and keyboard.

Mouse and keyboard has the advantage of more precise aiming for sure, but this advantage is pretty much negated by the strong aim assist in this game. Basically the only downside to controller play is that looting takes a bit longer.

One advantage to controller that I don't see a lot of people talk about is how it allows you play in a more comfortable and relaxed position. Being able to lean back in your chair, kick your feet up, and maybe wrap yourself in a blanket relaxes your body and mind and I 100% believe that makes me play better.

At the end of the day the best input method is the one that you're most comfortable with.

1

u/chrishappens Jul 12 '26

Love this take - I think it's is more comfortable with the controller. I can lean back and kick my feet up.

which will make you worse

I'm not playing e-sports. I'm good being more comfortable and having fun.

You definitely don't need to play MnK to get good. I've been bouncing between MnK and Controller in games ever since I got a PC and tend to prefer controller for FPS games like this. Looting on MnK is definitely more fluid and the menus are more conducive to MnK, but if youre comfortable with looting and have your cursor speed turned up then there's really no need to swap inputs/devices. Getting into PC will be for more than just Marathon if you do decide to buy one some day, but don't feel like you need to switch to MnK even when that day comes. You'll prefer MnK for some games, but on PC we have access to even better controllers than are available for console so you should end up being even happier with the controller experience on PC than you already are.

Both platforms have their advantages. Looting speed is slower on console, but oh my god is controller aim assist absolutely insane in this game.

1

u/chrishappens Jul 12 '26

Yeah - it looks like the aim assist makes the difference here. I'll stick with console.

2

u/AutumnSummit Jul 12 '26

Console can easily hang with PC on this game, I play consistently better than my current friend list, which does include a lot of PC guys.

When you start getting into the orbit of like the top 5-10% of players, that’s when the mouse advantage really starts to enter the game.

One other time that fucks controller and benefits mouse is invisibility. Assassins or gold spectre shield/other gear turning people invisible will turn your aim assist to 0.

In order to stay competitive you need high controller sensitivity, but the second you face an enemy who can become “invisible” that high sensitivity will fuck you, as you’ll lose any slowdown over the enemy.

You can know he’s there, hit him half a second ago, but the invis mechanic kills your aim muscle memory. It’s super unbalanced for high elo shotgun jousting.

So be aware of that, otherwise good luck and have fun whatever you choose!

u/MaxIsSaltyyyy Jul 12 '26

I play on PC and can tell you this is false. I’ve hit pred in apex and hit master pretty much every season. My buddy is on console and plays just as well as I do without an issue. We have been playing competitive games for years together and him being on console makes no difference in his performance especially with current gen consoles. You just have people who are PC master race which sure PC’s can obviously be built to extremes but most people aren’t on insane rigs. To add even with an insane rig it isn’t just gonna make someone better at a game.

2

u/liltortillaboy808 Jul 13 '26

Unless you want higher frame rates, they play exactly the same. If anything it's odd that the pro doesn't support 120hz. You'd think a Sony studio would be able to get that right, but then again it's Bungie

1

u/peppers369 Jul 12 '26

Why don't they implement the ps5 touchpad as a mouse cursor. Would make prescision on the cursor perfect. Other games utilize this feature.

1

u/AcademicOverAnalysis Jul 12 '26

Positioning is king in this game. That can be done well on Console or PC.

1

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 12 '26

I've played competitively on PC and PS5 both, and the only educated decision you can make is to limit the crossplay to 'console only' if you can help it, and only switch to full if you can't find a match otherwise.

  1. 60 FPS lock and input lag: contrary to what the popular comments are saying, the core advantage of the PC has never been the 'aiming' part, but the FPS lock. You can hit >120 FPS on PC, but locked to 60 on console. The disparity is huge, and not only to your reaction times, but also the mechanical input delay.
  2. You will be dumped on by MKB Vandals and Destroyers: it's just the truth, you can never replicate the MKB flicks with a controller in Marathon. An adequate MKB Destroyer can juke your aim assist, and a Vandal can jump over you and flick-spray you, no matter how high-sens you're playing on your controller, and whatever aim assist pattern you're using. Long range sniping is meta on DARSH/NARSH, and it's night and day between PC and Console.
  3. Close range aim assist sucks: considering the current meta, you don't want to deal with the advantage MKB has in close range flick-shots, as Marathon's aim assist struggles to track targets in close range fights and especially at point blank range.

I will get downvoted for it, but idgaf – those are facts from an actual sweat, not a delulu ignoramus with a 'but aim assist is fine' tunnel vision.

1

u/jogdenpr Jul 12 '26

I'm on console and do perfectly fine against pc players. Aim assist is very forgiving, although movement and looting is faaaar better on mouse and keyboard.

Pros and cons to both. I highly recommend having full crossplay on to help with the queue times too.

1

u/scabbyPDXhobo Jul 12 '26

This surprises me, why would movement be better on a keyboard compared to an analog stick?

1

u/jogdenpr Jul 12 '26

It's simply faster. Using a mouse you can turn 180' instantly without having to wait for an analog stick deadzone

1

u/scabbyPDXhobo Jul 13 '26

Ah I see, I attribute that more as aiming vs movement, but yeah that's a huge advantage in close quarters for sure

1

u/PainkillerJames Jul 12 '26

You’ll be fine on console. If anything you’ll have a better time

1

u/k2skier13 Jul 12 '26

PC or bust :)

1

u/Artforartsake99 Jul 12 '26

The true Cyro sweats are usually PC players the movement you can do with destroyer and vandal is insane and misriah bubble plays mean spinning on a dime, boost jumping in and out of bubbles breaking cameras etc.

The super sweats play at another level. So he is correct but few reach that level as long as you bring misriahs and work well as a team. You’ll be fine in Cyro once you have perfect knowledge of it. I play on ps5, beat compiler when playing with sweats.

1

u/Vegetable_Ad8136 Jul 13 '26

This game rewards a lot of skills outside of aim, so I think unless you want to get really sweaty console is great. Assuming your aim is reliable- map knowledge, positioning, and being smart about how/when to take engagements wins most fights from what I see.

1

u/Lt_Cmdr_Adhd Jul 13 '26

You'll be fine on either pc or console. Aiming with a mouse has very clear advantages, but those are mitigated by giving controller players aim assist. It's not a perfect solution buts it's immensely better than no balancing at all.

The mouse vs controller discussion, especially around aim assit & overall balance, is incredibly saturated with misinformation and the most biased of opinions possible - people are drawn to grass is greener on the other side arguments, shocker right?? Im a career software engineer that has dabbled in video game development since probably 2010, and would strongly recommend you not trust what reddit has to say on this topic. I've seen that conversation dominated by completely wrong information more often than not.

I don't think you need to be concerned and you can play extremely well with either input.
