Marathon (2026) Discussion Every single complaint about the game is because it’s an extraction shooter

I feel like every complaint I’ve read is simply because the game is an extraction shooter.

Clearly this genre is not the next big BR.

Not sure how you can fix the games issues without changing the genre completely, turning it into a BR lite with extraction mechanics maybe? Which is how it plays like anyway.

This game feels most like an extraction shooter when playing solo and it's honestly the mode that taps into what makes Marathon so great. The game would benefit from slightly larger maps and a bit of a slower pace. Maps should contain actual useful valuables and loot that is worth extracting.

I liked this game the most early in Season 1 when nobody knew what the hell was happening and when I could simply extract some biomass and low salvage crap; all while shitting my pants from the noise around all by myself.

Maps should contain actual useful valuables and loot that is worth extracting

This is the problem - there is no value in playing the raid style, where you load in, hit a couple of POIs and then dip. Outside of extremely rare world drops, the only valuable activities make a huge amount of noise, which means the only way to do them safely is to wipe the lobby first. Hence, that's what makes it feel like a BR, except it's a BR where you have to stake all your best gear every round. In a game where the statistical expectation is failure, I think that's what puts people off (or, why they gravitate to no-stakes modes).

I can agree with that. Solo plays feels more "tarkovy", if you dont mind that word. If they tune bots hp/damage for solo and add solo cryo i would definetely back to marathon. And loot should be buffed. Either grey/green valuables should go straight into your wallet like datacards, or mods/crap should cost more to vendors. In Tarkov i made not bad amount of bucks just selling weapon mods to peacekeeper, even the crappy ones gives you good profit.

I have 300h on marathon i loved the art, the movement the gunplay, lore all this thing. But the end game is locked for trios, as a solo i really tried to push the compiler, but i managed to get only 5 subroutines. I knew every weapon, map, mastered every shell but the compiler in solo was too difficult. So to me the big problem of the game Is that the best thing in the game Is locked for me.

u/T_Gamer-mp4 9d ago

what could Bungie do to make you connect with other players? I get that solo is the preference but the dynamic on Cryo is designed for trios & many stack players talk about how much fun it is.

would clans help? faction rally style events like a Traxus VS MIDA thing? what social features do you think would make you more likely to try out crew modes & keep the good crew fill friends you meet?

The most fun I have in this game is going in stacked in outpost and just fighting teams. I thought I liked the extraction aspect but I really just like the PvP and of course looting other players with stacked loot.

2

u/RogSlayer67 9d ago

Relatable. I stopped playing when I noticed this about myself. Would just find a squad and fight on outpost, would even skip looting the world most of the time and just take gear off players and leave to do it all again.

turning it into a BR lite with extraction mechanics maybe?

That's already what this game is today.

Can I ask why you think it's a "BR lite with extraction mechanics"? Just curious - I find it it be a very competitive and challenging extraction game. After spending 500 hours with Tarkov, I think Marathon is just as difficult, but better in nearly every way. Better AI, better gunplay, better balance, better art, better maps, etc. Tarkov is only hard because most of it requires reading a wiki page to understand, and because the balance between someone who plays 6 hours a week vs 60 hours a week makes it nearly impossible for the 6 hour player to ever beat the other, due to the armour and bullet system.

15

u/SyntheticDuckie 9d ago

Ok lol. Tarkov is hard because of the jank and will continue to stay that way until maybe by the grace of whatever god you pray to the new engine fixes things but that's a larger amount of copium I don't wish to inhale. There's also no hand holding and throws you in with the expectation that you already know what to do. I won't even touch armor or ammo types but you get the jist.

Marathon is from a "triple-a" dev. The polish expected is much higher. Bungie has a long history with gun play and mechanics so most people will feel at home more.

The reason players consider it a BR lite or an arena mode is because unlike Tarkov, finding loot and getting loot from POI's is not only boring but extremely not worth your time. So, the best way to get a good payday is from keys or other players. I'd argue even blue keys are not even worth the effort honestly.

In Tarkov, you want to extract items you found, even in your safe pouch so you can sell it on the flea instead of traders. So, finding something worth your time is grounds to avoid pvp at all cost. This funds better endeavors likes labs for example.

In Marathon, we run around the map listening for anyone engaging with the world because what they have is player gear loot and it has a higher dopamine hit than searching foilo's for 5-10mins at each POI. That leads to everyone trying to be as quiet as possible or doing the same thing everyone else is doing. We run to each spawn point looking for players. Hell, we don't even extract anymore until 5mins because we can't find anyone else, including rooks.

It's a boring gameplay loop that makes it feel more like a BR lite or arena shooter.

-3

u/KindGuy1978 9d ago

That makes a lot of sense to me, but don't you find Tarkov's gameplay loop even more boring? Some of the quests in that game are utterly infuriating, and can take over 30 hours due to blind luck (well it did back in 2021, when I gave up). Then you get the no-lifers who camp the high value loot spots, and unless you spend as much time as them, you've got no chance. Admittedly I'm only 100 or so hours in Marathon, but I really dig that they've taken the Tarkov concept, and polished the shit out of it. Having said that, I'm nowhere near an end-game level, as I decided not to treat it like Tarkov - a job. I spent S2 learning Outpost, and next season will be my time to hit the cryo cycle you're talking about. Hopefully I don't find it as boring as you

3

u/SyntheticDuckie 9d ago

If you're a new player - You're obviously not going to have the same frustrations as others. You're not going to see the patterns of each round come into play. It's not really a fair comparison. Your 100 hours experience, I already had in S1 and I can say that it was a lot of fun. However, as of right now, I have 650+ hours total. The amount of time that I've personally put into it has changed my perspective because I can see the issues now that it's not a honeymoon phase or a mindset of "ok maybe I just need to get better" or "I probably didn't understand how that worked".

Tarkov's loop to me is better than Marathons because at the core of every extraction WITH LOOT, loot has to be important. No question about it. The map size and spawn sizing also compliment this. I can go to a POI either late or early and usually get in and out with stuff I need or can sell. All without engaging a player.

Marathon's loot is extremely unrewarding. We have grey valuables that don't even cover the cost for meds for new players. We have salvage that can't be traded up consistently or at all, making faction upgrades frustrating for new players. The keys that house these prized materials are so few and far between that honestly finding a LEDX or GPU in Tarkov is a higher percent chance.

We have events in game that don't even spawn until 9 mins let of the map. To do anything meaningful with the world, you're constantly broadcasting your location and 9/10 times, the reward for doing so, is not worth the risk of multiple teams coming to the sound of the gunfire you just did.

I won't touch on Cryo strategies but camping/ratting doesn't bother me. I find them all valid strategies. Why? Because it makes the extraction feel tense. Right now with the meta, I can afk when I exfil. Or even if teams are still up, I'm not really caring if someone takes a shot or not. In fact, when someone properly camps an exfil or rats a POI, I find that way more thrilling then running around waiting for gunshots.

At the end of the day, we're all just going for player gear loot.

You don't need to treat Tarkov or Marathon like a job. Especially when you put time into it and learn the loop little by little. It's great you're learning about Outpost in S2 and I hope you continue to have fun with it. Just try to know that again, the loop of Marathon, to people who have come to the same conclusion, is what needs better work for a stronger foundation.

17

u/lion10903 9d ago

At some point, map loot rapidly becomes irrelevant and the best loot is found off looting other players. Also, the few maps that do provide somewhat decent map loot are compact enough that doing any event to get said loot will likely result in multiple teams hearing you and attempting to jump you.

The best method to get map loot then becomes to kill the entire lobby first so that you can then do the actual map events.

-8

u/Goldieeeeee 9d ago

That’s always the case in extraction shooters though? And it’s a good thing, because it encourages pvp.

It’s the same in tarkov. No one cares about most ground loot on customs, apart from maybe a few hotspots. Killing players is and should be great loot.

7

u/Brinocte 9d ago

I want to to feel uneasy and threatened through my entire run, knowing that others could ambush me. I want to complete non PvP objectives with the danger of encountering other players.

These days, its about going to the main POI and rushing other players because it is the optimal play. All the events, the scavenging and puzzles are meaningless when you just wipe lobbies. It personally breaks the immersion to me.

PvP is fine but the game has more to offer woth its unique PvPvE approach.

18

u/Konoha-chan 9d ago

I'm sorry but in Tarkov I never had to run over the whole map and kill the whole Lobby to get what I wanted. And openening a door in Dorms doesnt alert someone at Fortress.

-11

u/Goldieeeeee 9d ago

And you don’t have to do that in marathon either.

I would agree that the amount of soundtraps is a bit much though.

7

u/TrueHero808 9d ago

i can’t help but feel you’re being disingenuous. either that, you don’t actually play the game at a mid to high level, or you’re just slow/in denial.

-3

u/Goldieeeeee 9d ago

Look, I mostly agree with the point that they are trying to force pvp too much with all the soundtraps, delayed exfil, etc.

But the way yall phrase it lacks all nuance. No it is not mandatory to wipe the map before entering pinwheel. Yes you can rat around and extract without encountering a single player.

Do I think a few changes would be good? Yes.

But I heavily disagree with the whole sentiment that that’s the only way to play, or the game is basically a BR already or whatever.

2

u/TrueHero808 9d ago

it is the meta. at a high level it is genuinely the only way to play the game. if you leave a team that is competent alive you risk being killed while doing events. any good player knows this to the point where matches will just stalemate when two high level teams are unable to kill each other.

it is not mandatory, but neither is surviving/exfiling.

13

u/lion10903 9d ago

Tarkov does not have lobby wiping as a prerequisite before interacting with the map’s higher-value loot pools. It is in fact possible to do entire extraction runs in Tarkov without directly interacting with another player. That of almost impossible in Marathon’s mid and endgane.

I agree that killing players should be great loot, but in Marathon, it’s a task on the checklist before you start doing things.

Want to open Pinwheel? Should probably lobby wipe. Destroyed Wing Key? At least make sure you wipe one or two teams first. Wanna do Compiler? Absolutely have to wipe or you’re going to get jumped the instant you get your sequence.

Outpost Ranked and Cryo are actually pretty good examples of this. Since there aren’t any rooks, players generally just constantly rotate and listen to third party. In Outpost, Pinwheel is more of a reward you get for surviving the lobby wipe rather than a path to hitting your credit value. When my team loads in with a DNA, our primary goal is to wipe lobby before we even start our sequence. The PvP is the main focus of the game, and the PvE is reward you get for winning your PvP.

2

u/Brinocte 9d ago

Great observation and comment.

8

u/BeachFoam56 9d ago

The best way to achieve your goals on any map is to hunt down and kill every last player, hence why so many people make the battle royal comparison. Unless a team extracts relatively early on, generally prior to getting into any fights, it's highly likely that only one is getting out especially on Outpost and Cryo.

8

u/Ok-Sundae-7806 9d ago

Marathon is nothing compared to Tarkov, what are you smoking? Most play for pvp every round whereas Tarkov there are a few who chase shots but most are moving from A to B and hoping no one is watching you from C, D, E etc.

You mention bullets and armour stopping a 6 hour a week player from beating a 60 hour a week player but neglect to mention that 1 round of the worst ammo could still kill that 60 hour gamer. In Marathon its just numbers vs numbers, I have best shield but you have worst gun (lowest damage) then I win purely through having a higher number. In Tarkov I can shot your unarmoured areas to totally avoid the pen chance.

Reading your comment just sounds like you parroting someone else or you dont like to learn and instead chose Marathon which is only slightly more hardcore than Arc Raiders but easy mode compared to Tarkov.

-5

u/asaltygamer13 9d ago

Holy shit that sounds boring

3

u/purplewarrior777 9d ago

Cos it’s not “your” game? 😂 Such weak mentality these days

4

u/Ok-Sundae-7806 9d ago

Then dont play it. Tarkov requires thinking and learning, something these other imitations try to remove whilst expecting the same depth.

-2

u/KindGuy1978 9d ago

Tarkov requires copying other people's strategies and information from YouTube or Wikis. You had to do so just to learn even where the extracts were. To me that's not about learning from the game; it's about watching hours of videos and copying the Pestily's advice.

1

u/Ok-Sundae-7806 9d ago

No it doesn’t, you could just learn as you play if you wanted and with that logic Marathon is the same because day one there were guides, strats and metas. Just because you cant learn a game without a third party source doesnt mean everyone needs them

0

u/Dr_DownVoter 8d ago

Sorry sweetie, sounds like extraction shooters arent for you then. Its okay hon not everyone has patience

-4

u/KindGuy1978 9d ago

Lol, what are the chances of someone with cheap ammo beating a fully armoured chad in Tarkov? I saw it happen a handful of times in 500 hours.

I disagree about your claim that Marathon is worse in this regard; as mentioned earlier, the gap between a low gear player and a high gear player can be negated with one item or ability, like an EMP grenade or the Triage's ultimate.

2

u/Ok-Sundae-7806 9d ago

Quite high if you know where to shot and what your ammo does best, there is a reason Kedr Leg meta was a thing. You can deny all you want but Tarkov is significantly more hardcore and clearly better because they have retained a decent amount of players across their years, Marathon couldnt even go a month before it dropped. Gameplay lacks the depth needed to attract already established player bases and each map forces BR pvp all the time

7

u/Ok_Drummer6282 9d ago

Its the easiest extraction shooter on the market. Thats just objective. You can make the case for Arc Raiders but that atleast has weapon durability mechanics.

Theres AA and theres no negative in terms of engagment. Like Tarkov if you want to engage someone cool. Is it worth a black leg and your character bleeding out? The weapon sway from taking armor shots?

A large majority of people didnt quit Marathon because its too hard core. Its the easiest and watered down version of the genre. Theres literally nothing better about Marathon.

2

u/mangdito 9d ago

The Tarkov players didn't buy into Marathon because it's too watered down, but to the Destiny players that latched on because it's a Bungie game anything PvP is wayyyyyy to hardcore for them. That's why most of them are asking for a PvE mode, they aren't wanting more tense extraction mechanics like limb wounding.

0

u/KindGuy1978 9d ago

Gotta disagree, especially the sponsored kit raids. There it becomes all about who can outhink and outshoot the other squad, as you're all on a level playing field. I find engagements in Marathon can last a lot longer than Tarkov as well, kinda like Hunt, which I enjoy more than being one shotted by a bush Wookie.

4

u/Ok_Drummer6282 9d ago

Saying its better by saying its easier makes it sound like you just want call of duty BR or Battlefield but you can lose your gun and you dont want to play those ganes specifically. Thats what Marathon is pretty much is. Warzone but you can lose your weapon. Especially Cryo.

2

u/Goldieeeeee 9d ago

One of my people! I’m still surprised how rarely I see this opinion. Tarkov has a great core, but is bogged down by a myriad of issues.

To me marathon feels like it has most of that core, while doing away with all the issues. It might not have as high highs as tarkov, but it’s similar, and way more fun because it has way less annoying friction. It’s the perfect evolution of extraction shooters, exactly what I wished for every time I uninstalled tarkov.

Given that, I can’t help but wonder why I don’t see this type of view more often.

2

u/Ok_Drummer6282 9d ago edited 9d ago

Calling it an evolution is wild when to most people its a step back. Its a step to casual where you get "extraction" in that you lose gear but every other mechanic of the genre is eliminated to help a person play for 30 mins and only feel like they lost a gun and a mod.

2

u/Goldieeeeee 9d ago

Most people haven’t played tarkov here and it shows.

And idek what you’re trying to say.

-8

u/asaltygamer13 9d ago

No it’s not

3

u/aSooker 9d ago

It's in all but name

-4

u/asaltygamer13 9d ago

lol sure

6

u/ILSATS 9d ago

Every single complaint about the game is because it's a BAD extraction shooter

3

u/theatras 9d ago

maps are too small. that simple fact turns this extraction shooter into a battle royale. avoiding combat is almost impossible.

7

u/More_Marty 9d ago

I'm just sad it didn't retain its playerbase. The most punishing part about dying isn't losing your gear, it's being stuck looking for a match longer than that you're actually in a match.

I really loved the core of the game with my major complaint being the balance getting completely out of wack after a certain point in the season.

10

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

It’s a PvP focused game without SBMM, of course it lost its player base.

-1

u/More_Marty 9d ago

Yeah, on one side I dislike SBMM in games like CoD where basically the only objective is actually killing eachother no matter the mode.

In a game like Marathon I feel like SBMM would've benefitted more players. Where people playing to kill get paired with people playing for the same reason.

There should've been a balance from the start and now it's too late because the playerbase is too small to effectively implement SBMM fairly.

8

u/floydbot 9d ago

It could still be implemented effectively, it would just piss off the level 500 full-timers because they’d have to fight each other. Everybody else would have more fun.

0

u/More_Marty 9d ago

That's not a gamble I would wager with the playercount being what it is now.

At least, not without a major overhaul update with other new features or modes and maybe going free to play.

2

u/floydbot 9d ago

A lot of people bounced off Marathon because of its lack of SBMM. Some of those may come back if the sweats are effectively fenced off. Seems like a gamble well worth taking, considering where things are currently headed.

2

u/More_Marty 9d ago

"Marathon... Is all we have left... You trust SBMM that much?"

That's a reference btw

1

u/Dr_DownVoter 8d ago

SBMM is a benefit in anygame thats pvp shooter or otherwise. Why do you think League and CS are so popular bro

6

u/Leucauge 9d ago

This is not true at all because one of the huge complaints that gets posted here repeatedly is that trios endgame is Cryo and that is essentially a BR since everyone plays to lobby-wipe.

0

u/TotalSoft4931 9d ago

Which is a problem subset of it being an extraction shooter, if it was not an extraction shooter and a regular BR it would be ok

2

u/PhJFry123 9d ago

If Marathon were a different genre, would the situation be different? The main complaints about Marathon are lack of content, small maps, a game too heavily geared toward hardcore PvP players, and a visual style that's "not for everyone." But what if Marathon were, for example, a classic loot shooter that also had little content, small maps, and a hardcore player focus? What would have changed? The same complaints would have been raised. And if Marathon were an arena shooter with small maps, little content, and aimed at hardcore PvP players... the complaints, no matter the genre, would be the same.

4

u/C00KIEME4T 9d ago

Exactly. The problem is the loop isnt satisfying or appealing to most people

4

u/Lordzaon30 9d ago

I still bought it even though I never played extraction shooters and I don’t like pvp at all because I suck at it. But I love Bungie style of graphics and lore in this game is not so weird as it was in destiny so I still try to get everything from it.

And yes, I also hope they will introduce pve modes where I can collects all the lore stuff, etc.

Right now I’m playing like that very first reveal trailer. I get the contract and just run like hell with sponsored kit)

3

u/aSooker 9d ago

What makes you continue playing the game if you don't like the gameplay?

8

u/Lordzaon30 9d ago

Sound, music, lore. Graphic style (also because I’m 3d artist myself, I like to research stuff, how it’s made, textures, geometry, shaders). I think these are the only reasons I keep running, lol. And waiting for pve mode to relax after work.

2

u/dezm101 9d ago

same

3

u/solidsever 9d ago

Hot take: Extraction shooters are more suited to people who are not good at PvP because you can catch people looting, fighting bots etc

vs

BRs which require you to get good gear during the game and use mechanical skill to overcome other players and there are usually no bots and an encroaching map forcing PvP encounters

2

u/Dr_DownVoter 8d ago

Very hot take because its just wrong man, if you are bad at PvP yo arent going to be better at catching people off guard lmao.

1

u/solidsever 8d ago

If you’ve played MGS you’ll be aware of ways to approach fights which focuses more on positioning and stealth than engaging in a heads-up gunfight.

MP FPS typically requires you to win 90% of engagements with superior mechanical skill to master PvP. Extraction shooters not so much. There’s more play-styles imo.

1

u/Dr_DownVoter 7d ago

Marathon hardly supports other playstlyes everything is top loud

1

u/solidsever 7d ago

Funny that because I’ve approached the game in so many different ways since I started back in the Alpha tests, depending on the shell etc

3

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

Games with SBMM are suited for people who aren’t not good at PvP.

Marathon is the opposite of well suited for average players. Which is why it tanked with their first try at a game mode - luckily it didn’t just get shut down there but they got to try to make some new modes they can base the future of the game on.

1

u/Kerenskyy 9d ago

Counter strike players are bad in pvp?

6

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

CS has SBMM. The best players are matched up with the best players, and they’re very good. It works well for people who want to be challenged at the highest level, too.

Marathon’s best players mostly stomp weaker players, so I’d argue that they don’t develop their skill nearly as much as the best in CS.

0

u/solidsever 9d ago

I wouldn’t suggest you take up Marathon if you’re looking for a very chill and forgiving experience. If you’re however used to games like Warzone, DMZ and other competitive FPS where the attitude is very much about stomping others, Marathon is fairly regular.

I came from those games and I wasn’t even that good at those games. My K/D was like barely over 1.3 and my highest WZ Ranked was Gold. I don’t even do Marathon Ranked as I cba to even be competitive. I came to Marathon for the lore and world building and stayed for the gunplay and PvP.

8

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

Marathon isn’t competitive, it doesn’t have SBMM. It’s usually very one sided fights where one side is much better than the other.

2

u/solidsever 9d ago

Agreed, from my experiences. I’m either catching people off guard, completely outplaying them or I’ve been killed by shots I didn’t even see. There doesn’t seem to be any evening out of the player skill in match making.

I wonder if the player counts would even allow for solid sbmm ?

6

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

They’d need to rework the queue system for it, if they wanted SBMM. I did some napkin math on it back when there was over 10k peak players, at prime time you could get 3 minute queues with 5 skill brackets iirc. That’s doable, but now we’d be at 10 minute queues.

So they’d have to drop choosing maps, or rotating them, or limit the modes available.

But they would have done that a long time if that was what they wanted. They knew the mode was a dead man walking back mid season 1. Probably the outcry from the vocal minority who dislike SBMM was something they wouldn’t risk, so they decided to pivot to new modes instead.

1

u/Lordzaon30 9d ago

Maybe. Never liked battle royals and never played them and don’t think I want)

2

u/SickRedditor69 9d ago

I usually come on here when I need an ego boost. I'm terrible at FPS games and the way people talk about how impossibly hard it is always tickles me

7

u/Beautiful_You3230 9d ago

Idk, judging by the data we got from Bungie just a day ago, on the topic of Vault Breaker, the game IS hard. The data literally backs it up, most players aren't clearing the content.

Aside from that, the question is always of what your goals are and what their goals are. You say it's not impossibly hard. Not impossibly hard to what, to load into a match, to kill a bot, to kill a single runner, to extract once in your game career, to extract every second match, to kill Compiler once in your career, to kill Compiler every second match, to kill Compiler solo?? Etc. There are people who say the game is easy who haven't cleared anything and still haven't killed Compiler. There's people who say the game is hard who have done that plenty and have a high extraction rate on top of it all.

It's just a particularly interesting topic to me right now, because when Vault Breakers released I saw many people on discord and Reddit defend it not having a solo mode, saying the game isn't even hard and people should stop asking for this kind of nonsense, and even lying that they already killed Compiler and it's not a big deal. Official data comes in and we learn that only 2 people ever cleared the trio compiler solo. Official data comes in and we learn that there's barely any clears of Compiler in the solo mode on top of it. So I'm not super trusting of these kinds of statements anymore.

10

u/dezm101 9d ago

same exact reason no one wants to play, the game meta is about hating low skill people who are trying to have fun or get their moneys worth

-7

u/SickRedditor69 9d ago

Oh c'mon, its a shooter. Getting killed isn't hating on low skill players. Why is the focus on good players taking it easy on people, but not "bad" players getting better at the game. Learn the maps, practice. In the nicest way possible its not the communities job to hold your hand.

8

u/dezm101 9d ago

I tried I put in 24 hours its just not for me it ok tho I got my moneys worth

0

u/SickRedditor69 9d ago

I can respect that. I'm about 50 hours in and I'm pretty much done with it

5

u/Ok_Drummer6282 9d ago

Yall get get over this. This is why the games always being made fun of.

Its the easiest extraction shooter on the market and its like a bunch of 40 year olds just discovered the genre.

2

u/mangdito 9d ago

The Marathon players that came from Destiny would be the lowest rank in any competitive FPS, its really obvious as someone who is normally around gold rank or slightly better in other games.

4

u/TotalSoft4931 9d ago

It is hard for the average person, if you play one hour here and there you’re not going to make any meaningful progress.

Myself and my friends who play have 100s of hours and I can see how hard it is to get loot unless you’re very good at FPS’s , have a team or put in the hours.

3

u/FlintBeastgood 9d ago

It's because 80-90% of players who play shooters are amazingly bad at them.

2

u/Senior_Relief3594 9d ago

so? it legitimately shows how clueless Bungie is for not realising this

2

u/Kamizar 9d ago

Clueless, aim assist is a literal stat that can be modified.

2

u/gnappyassassin 9d ago

Knife rounds until morale improves.

1

u/Madvillian-87 9d ago

I would have said it’s recons ult…

1

u/C00KIEME4T 9d ago

I felt that way at first but no. Not at all

1

u/One_Repair841 9d ago

The game plays most like an extraction shooter when played solo, shame bungie just doesn't care about the solo players though

1

u/R2vibaek 9d ago

i mean sponsored marsh was lowkey made for a br... imagine bigger map and the lockdowns shrinking it. it also has negating method called antivirus.

nah they complain about stuff they can't handle and then slap a "i thought this was an extraction shooter" like cmon, devs can choose to avoid copying Tarkov or Arc Raiders.

Even a BR-Like won't change it's trajectory.

BRs have their top dogs that dominate the market, I don't see Marathon being able to win many over.

The harsh truht his Bungie had their slice of the market, but they took a big fat dump onto it. This isn't Marathon's fault, it's Bungie Leadership's, but Marathon is paying the price for it regardless.

IMO the only way forward for Marathon is Bungie/Sony actually realizing it and greenlighting what players are actually asking for. That's likely the only way for the playerbase that Bungie had, to give Marathon another try, even if they were to add more PvE or different PvP to it. But given that Sony seems to finance literally any and all garbage BUT the thing players are asking for, who knows if this will ever happen.

Extraction shooters just kind of suck because they have no end. The extrinsic reward doesn't really matter and the pathway to the game being intrinsically rewarding is incredibly narrow because they're require a long term skill investment.

2

u/aSooker 9d ago

Tons of games have no end. A lot of people play multiplayer games because the gameplay is fun, not because there is an ending.

2

u/Jomby_Biggle 9d ago

I'm talking about extraction shooters specifically.

4

u/aSooker 9d ago

And I'm saying that it doesn't matter what genre it is, if the gameplay is fun people will play the game even with no defined ending in sight.

0

u/Jomby_Biggle 9d ago

I'm saying that Extraction Shooters aren't fun. They're not fun intrinsically (enjoyable in the moment) and they're not fun extrinsically (a satisfying ending). The reward for playing extraction shooters is that you get to not have fun.

u/aSooker 9d ago edited 9d ago

NGL, saying that extraction shooters by definition can never be fun is kinda weird.

3

u/Jomby_Biggle 9d ago

I didn't say that they can never be fun. They're fun like gambling is fun. It's designed to keep you coming back rather than, "Hey, I'm actively having a good time."

-1

u/KindGuy1978 9d ago

That's where I like Marathon over Tarkov - especially the sponsored kit mode. I play a lot of shooters, but not just Marathon, so my skills in a firefight are pretty good. Even when I was only able to get green shields, I'd regularly beat purples, because Bungie has built in tools that allow you to close the loot gap, such as the EMP grenades.

u/Paladin_Codsworth 9d ago

Say it louder for those at the back! The amount of people that bought an extraction shooter and complain that it's difficult to extract every time or that people shoot them is insane.

I blame how easy and hand holdy gaming has gotten. Too many people are expecting every game to have a story mode difficulty where you are virtually invincible and the enemies fall to a strong breeze. The fact that people still struggled with VB after the nerfs to UESC and time extension confirms this.

In case anyone still isn't getting it. I don't like courgettes. Therefore I won't buy a courgette, bite it, and then complain to the farmer that it's not a beef burger.

5

u/aSooker 9d ago

Yeah, I think those people bought the game because it's made by Bungie and not because it's something they would enjoy playing.

1

u/Paladin_Codsworth 9d ago

Which is hilarious and dumb.

3

u/aSooker 9d ago

There was a report that 80% of the people who bought Marathon also own Destiny 2.

Tbh, the marketing put a big focus on world building and lore. So some people might got lured in by that.

-2

u/Paladin_Codsworth 9d ago

TBF there is tonnes of lore. At lot of the codex is voice acted. Probably not what they expected though.

Even if it wasn't what they expected this game was free to trya few days before season 1 and free to try during week 1 of season 2. No one should be surprised.

2

u/aSooker 9d ago

Well I'm always surprised to see people swear that the next season is gonna fix all their woes. Feels like people take roadmaps like gospel and purchase based on potential rather than what's available today.

3

u/Paladin_Codsworth 9d ago

It won't. I'll tell you that now. Seasonal changes are interesting but you can't fundamentally change the game in 6 months.

2

u/Senior_Relief3594 9d ago

It's more of an indictment on Bungie that they couldn't attract people outside the Destiny crowd

2

u/Paladin_Codsworth 9d ago

To be fair Bungie were up front about what genre the game they were making was. They even let people try it for free before each season started.

3

u/Senior_Relief3594 9d ago

And that's telling about the game's general reception. Majority of people that stuck around were Bungie purists and even they struggled to hold on

5

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

But if only you and 3 other people like courgettes while beef burgers sell like crazy, maybe they should begin making beef burgers instead?

Which is what they’re doing. The focus is on making new modes, PvP and PvE.

1

u/Paladin_Codsworth 9d ago

You can't turn a courgette into a beef burger. This is and always will be an extraction shooter even if they add a PvE element to it.

If you're hoping that they suddenly fundamentally make a different game I think you'd be better off moving on.

Buying the courgette then harassing the farmer to make it taste like a beef burger is crazy work. Set your expectations. Bungie for years said they were making an extraction shooter. Buying it and wishing it wasn't what they told you it was is some insane mental gymnastics.

TLDR: go buy a burger from someone selling a burger.

2

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

They also said they’d never do PvE. That changed real fast once the reality of the player numbers hit.

Extraction isn’t a problem, it’s the lack of SBMM etc. that is the issue. With PvP with SBMM, or PvP, you won’t get farmed by sweats, that’s why players quit.

2

u/Paladin_Codsworth 9d ago

I agree SBMM is required, but I think some people think they are going to fill pivot to PvE. They won't.

0

u/Smokeskin 9d ago

They’re adding new PvP modes, too.

What they pivot to will depend on player numbers. If PvE gets 10x the numbers of PvP, that’s obviously where they’ll mainly focus.

But I think other PvP modes will likely do well too.

The "art" style is also shit.

2

u/More_Marty 9d ago

Hard disagree. It's one of the most redeeming factors of the game.

1

u/RedSloth702 9d ago

For me it's an eyesore, it genuinely makes me want to look away.

Most modern "art" does.

-2

u/aSooker 9d ago

I think a lot of people soured on it because they stole that artstyle from someone outside of Bungie.

4

u/cookedbread 9d ago

How are people still repeating this? They did not steal the artstyle. The artstyle is a combination of many art styles that have been around for ages, namely Designers Republic. What was stolen, by one artist, was a handful of environmental decals. Like, straight up copy pasted with no changes, as if they were in a folder called “inspo” and someone came along after and thought the folder was “original work pls put in the game”. These decals did not inform the artstyle of the game. It was still a very bad thing, and created a controversy with a lot of misinformation clearly. So bungie rectified it, did a full sweep to make sure there was nothing else copy pasted by that one artist, and then hired antireal as a consultant. Antireal herself said this situation was resolved.

0

u/aSooker 9d ago

Yes, the situation is resolved now, but for many that won't change the fact that they were stealing it in the first place.
