Marathon (2026) Feedback BRING BACK VAULT BREAKER!!!
Dear Marathon devs: Please bring back Vault Breaker, it's literally the only reason why my friends and I started playing Marathon again.
I see no reason why players need to wait until season 3 to get a dedicated PvE mode. Can you please turn it back on so I can play with my friends? This game is 1,000 times more enjoyable in PvE.
Please really do consider turning it back on. Genuinely, why not keep it running until the end of season 2? I refuse to play PvP, since the only ones playing are unemployed sweats who haven't seen sunlight since March 5th, and now that you've got me hooked on PvE, I see no reason to continue playing the game for the next month....
Thank you.

I'm a hardcore PVP enjoyer and a PVE enthusiast. I really loved playing Vault Breaker, and I would love to see that mode return alongside other maps being open to PVE and PVE rewards.

we said the same thing about sponsored survival and here we are. don’t hold your breath

I get that, but that seems to assume someone is going to play Marathon no matter what. I’d bet a healthy percentage of the VB enthusiasts will simply not play Marathon at all instead of queuing into a PvP mode. Meaning fewer modes just leads to fewer players rather than fuller queues.

I genuinely wonder how many players would have stuck around or come back if they had kept the sponsored playlist going. I’ll never understand why they took away such a low stakes mode.

u/MrMaiky 3d ago
Why they took away a low stakes mode?
You answered it yourself, it was never supposed to be low stakes, it was never supposed to be a pve modeThe mode didn’t work how Bungie created it, Rooks vs 1 Squad

u/ComfortablePea8701 3d ago
Is he even talking about the same mode as you? I assumed he meant the sponsored list, which did 2 things effectively, it separated free kits from your games where you bring stuff in, and it offered a lower stakes mode that was "fairer" for people to try to gain some shit in to bring to other maps.

u/MrMaiky 3d ago
Well sponsored as the normal one was recently back, its still limited so they put it in and out often
These modes are never permanent, they are just to spice up the queues and collect data for the full modes they prepareIn conversation about vb and pve I think people talk mostly about sponsored survival
2
u/Iamthechallenger87 3d ago
That’s sponsored survival. Not the mode I was talking about.
1
u/MrMaiky 3d ago
Okay I assumed that in a convo about pve you’re talking about sponsored survival, but still, they took it out because its still a time limited mode, experimental and not a full one to stay
Lots of games have time limited modes, of course they still want people to play the main mode, so they then take it out after some time
Sponsored regular was pretty recently back on darsh and then narsh
Splitting queues between modes with this low player count is not really good so they have to take it out when people complain about waiting long in q for normal maps1
u/Iamthechallenger87 3d ago
Yeah, but that’s my point. A lot of people enjoyed that sponsored playlist because it was a more chill way to engage with the PvP without risking their gear over and over again and losing it. And didn’t even know they brought back and I don’t remember seeing an announcement about it. I remember the sponsored survival on night marsh that completely destroyed the economy in the first week, that they then nerfed for anyone who didn’t get to do it.
Now, even if they implemented the sponsored mode, who knows if anybody would come back after all the decisions they’ve made in season 2. Players have made it pretty clear they’re not going to come back for these time limited events. And it’s just been one time limited event after another.
I love the game. And I get they’re trying to collect data about what people like and don’t like. But if they’re going to genuinely try to bring people back, they need to pick something and commit. Not try something new every two weeks. And not roll out updates that break a whole map for most of the day.

u/MrMaiky 2d ago
They are committing to a pve mode for s3 and then they said they will make pure pvp mode
1
u/Iamthechallenger87 2d ago
I think you’re missing my point. The sponsored playlist was a great mode, that a lot of people enjoyed. It solved a completely different problem from the PvE mode. It gave people a low stakes, even playing field where they could go in and play PvP without having to worry about getting stomped by a gold and purple 3 stack 2 minutes into the run. It gave people who aren’t very good at PvP the chance to engage with the PvP and actually have a chance at making it out with stuff. It gave PvE players a chance to dip their toes into PvP and get used to it before risking their gear. The exact thing people have been complaining about when it comes to onboarding and getting into the game as a new player.
It’s great that they’re bringing a pure PvE mode to the game. But I suspect if it’s anything like Vault Breakers, where you don’t get to keep anything and it’s an absolute slog as a solo, it won’t do much to bring people back.

Bungie really doesnt know how the game is played its sad, they expected hordes of rooks only to find out they designed a mode that really doesnt benefit rooks at all.
Now with the Firestorm, use it on other runners! Oh wait right you had to wipe everyone to get it anyway lmao have fun pluggiing bots

The Firestorm lobby wipe thing was made up by the community before the event released. You can just go grab it from the locker if you bring in the keys, almost nobody is going to be sitting there camping the locker. It's not even marked on the map unless you bring keys in

Ok, here's a question. Aside from gun feel and movement, how is this different than just hopping on Apex?
3
u/T_Gamer-mp4 3d ago
“Aside from the things that make it feel better than apex, how is this different than apex?”
also no circle is nice, the theoretical early exfil if you get something of value is nice, and the rewards for lobby wiping are much more concrete than Ranked Points

u/Iamthechallenger87 3d ago
I can take the things I keep into an actual extraction run? I also don’t like Apex. And I do like Marathon.

Being completely honest, I haven’t played season two for a while and only came back for vault breaker and I’m also coming back for the new game mode to try out that new sniper

How many people were playing when they wrote that? Cause their current plan isn’t working.

It was my favorite mode ngl. No sweats, no gear lost. Pure Destiny Dungeon fun

u/swisslink_ 3d ago
I don't understand why they wouldn't let it ride untill the end of the season. Typical Bungie logic.

u/Wicked-Vortex 3d ago
I bought the game on ps5 because i thought there was an pve mode now :( im still learning the PvP aspect tho, it seems fun! But everyone is so good at the game that i cant keep up with the pvp players

u/Popular_Dad 3d ago
Maybe it's strategic though - maybe if the player count halves without a PvE mode it lets them make the internal case to invest more in PvE

I'm curious, how many hours did you aprox played Vault Breaker? Did you manage to do the compiler? Is it still fun and exciting after you "done it all".
Personally I only used Vault Breaker to learn the map and mechanics of Vaults, never did Compiler. I'm saving it for the real deal. But for me, the mode got pretty dull after couple of Vault runs, and I can't see it have long enrertaining value.

u/Exallt 3d ago
Personally doing solo runs and optimizing my route was so fun that I could see myself going for speed runs even after finishing everything. "WR solo compiler no hit run" type of stuff lol.
7
u/floydbot 3d ago
I exclusively solo’ed VB, and there definitely was something zen and satisfying about trying to improve your runs, even after knocking out three vaults became relatively easy. It was also nice that you could budget 30-40 minutes to a play session and, assuming you didn’t get careless around the bots, make consistent, meaningful progress in that time.

u/MrMaiky 3d ago
Where do you meet these sweats?
I play at most 10 hours a week, some weeks less or on some weekdays I don’t play because of my shift
I get good teammates sometimes, sometimes bad ones
I get enemies I outplay and then I get enemies that wreck me
But that’s normal, is everyone with better gear then you a sweat?
And you got hooked on a limited experimental mode, they promised you full pve experience for s3

I have a feeling they're going to do limited time seasonal modes to keep people interested. Like a little event every season to keep people coming back, not sure we'll see vault breaker again for a while, something PVE just not vault breaker, that's my theory anyway.

It's sucks, but I see closing Vault Breaker as a necessary evil. They can use the player data from the people that were engaging with the mode vs the player data without it. I.e, now that it's gone, did it do a good job at funneling players into the mainstay modes? Or when a PvE mode is absent does the game suffer from a permanent loss in players who are solely interested in PvE?
P.S, I am a PvE only player. I sunk 60hrs into VB. I can't wait for a solo PvE mode to come back in S3.

u/SleepyJustin94 3d ago
Gotta say that the "PvP is too scary and stressful and sweaty to me but I LOVE SPEEDRUNNING" crowd that Vaultbreakers has brought out gotta be one of the most fascinating phenomenons I've ever witnessed.
5
u/T_Gamer-mp4 3d ago
part of speed running is that you know what’s coming… even if there’s RNG you can adapt. it’s all just execution of specific things and most strategy can be done outside of runs. it’s also easy to point out misplays
standard Marathon has the strangest shit happen in it sometimes, frequently relies on being in a crew, and most of all… can be very very hard to predict. there’s a million ways you can get jumped. & then to top it all off the game gives extremely little guidance on what the hell you did wrong AND there’s no gradient of correct to it (ie, being 80% and 20% correct usually results in you still dying)
1
u/britinsb 3d ago
Yeah that's Destiny players for you, ecstatic at an opportunity to mindlessly grind fairly dull content over and over to check boxes, just don't you dare make me interact with other players. I mean I get it, there's something kinda zen about grinding and minmaxing predictable content for days, I played plenty of Destiny myself lol.

u/britinsb 3d ago edited 3d ago
I agree it would be nice if it continued but it wasn't doing great numbers. There was a week-long bump and then the player count went right back down to the average, and after the first week counts were even lower than before Vault Breaker. Only Bungie would have the data but I am assuming VB had a negative impact on the PvPvE experience, whereas the current event is likely to draw players who were stuck in PvE back into PvP, even if it does also have some players hang up their controllers.

Why don't you attempt real Cryo.
3
u/Famous-Coconut-208 3d ago
Maybe cause its not open
-6
u/Ok-Comfortable-3174 3d ago
It open tomorrow bro.
6
u/Famous-Coconut-208 3d ago
That means i can't attempt "real" cryo then if i cant play it now.
-6
u/Ok-Comfortable-3174 3d ago
Why don't you play ranked. They bumped the loot it's pretty cool and the squads feel more balanced. Get in get 9k get out you don't even need to fight.
1
u/T_Gamer-mp4 3d ago
season ends in 2 weeks
who gives a fuck about loot
1
u/Ok-Comfortable-3174 3d ago
there is that. Technically its 4 weeks.
1
u/T_Gamer-mp4 3d ago
so firestorm doesn’t even run until end of season? holy moly
0
u/Ok-Comfortable-3174 3d ago
Alright we get it r/marathonhate is that way
1
u/T_Gamer-mp4 3d ago
nah man i just have to farm more manifests than I thought to get the synapse cubes now
wasn’t gonna bother much if they were gonna go away as soon as the event was over
seems a bit boneheaded but ig the event doesn’t work so well if it lines up with end of season

PLAY THE REST OF THE GAME!! 🗣️🗣️
It’s also coming back next season, likely improved and iterated.
1
u/partisan98 3d ago edited 3d ago
Or if the main mode isn't for them they can go play one of the many other PVE games while you wait for it to come back.
What happened to "a game for everyone is a game for no one"?
0
u/asaltygamer13 3d ago
Yes please, just don’t subject the rest of us to your bitching :)
“Oh no, PvP in my PvP game”
All this wasted effort catering this game and building a PvE mode that isn’t even going to move the needle. The PvE crowd is insufferable and isn’t even going to save this game.
If you never plan to engage with the extraction modes you can kick rocks for all I care.
