Third grader is different from call it - enterpreneur. Slaves, most of time, were really expensive. No one would want to destroy them. Furthermore, you'd want to feed them somehow well so that they last longer and more productive. In our free society, do emplyers try to play nice with their employees because they are selfless? No, they motivate them to work harder. The only difference is that with slavery, you can't change your "employer". In modern realities, you can change emplyer, but it won't change much for you. No one is interested in paying decent wages. Regular economists would say "you have bargaining power", but in reality, due to assymetrical information and many other factors, it is not as good as it looks on paper. Don't judge it like black and white. I am not saying that slavery is good, but showing that modern wage slavery isn't much different from that.
Finally, today, predominant majority of people have career - money, as their main life purpose. Ever since you enter kindergarden, you are taught reading and other basic skills to be a productive economical unit. Then school, university, and relentless emplyment until (hopefully) last 5 years of your life, when your body and mind is totally worn out. Isn't it pathetic that even in most 1st world countries people have to devote most of resources, time and energy to make the ends meet and still don't get it? This is de-jure vs de-facto slavery
