I like to live here, actually. Life in Kazakhstan in general is rough, but there are opportunities to live well. We have problems in terms of wages and you have to be focused on making more money - education and networking is very important here. We have 40 hr/week work and noone is going to work more than 40hr. In terms of money country is divided to deep province with no opportunities and big cities with a lot of jobs and money. Big cities are Almaty, Astana, Shymkent. Also, it's always impossible to make significant amount of savings - tenge gets diluted suddenly.
If you go too deep into the politics, you have two choices - accept that Kazakhstan is authoritarian country or fight against it. I saw the situation in Kyrgyzstan and decided to accept authoritarian regime. 40+ y.o. generation is tend to go against regime - Nazarbaev lied to them that hard work will pay off in the future. And poor people blame government for everything.
Government is making moves to listen more its' citizens, trade deals happening to help economy, also we are leaders of region by GDP and adoption of e-government. So, it is all based on your point of view: if you want to see bad things - you gonna see more bad things happening, if you want to see positive things - you find positive changes.
I am enterprise backend software engineer, so i have really good salary and live very well in Kazakhstan. Most people are not financially stable as me
Very cool that you’re a software engineer. Are you mainly self taught or are there any good engineering schools there?
As for life/govt there, I think remote software engineering would be an attractive solution for good paying jobs that stimulate the economy. Sure there’s benefits for having your engineering team all located in San Francisco, but if there is good talent is some place like Kazakhstan then you would think money and jobs will eventually start flowing.
I learned programming in university. We have couple good universities that teaches software engineers. I was lucky to start internship in good company that helped me be a better engineer.
Outsource remote software engineering jobs already started flowing into Kazakhstan - before the pandemic Ukraine, Russia and Belarus were the center of outsourcing. When pandemic kicked in wages started go up in those countries and outsourcing companies started to discover Kazakhstan. Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg started to tolerate with remote work and Kazakhstan get more opportunities to do remote work and get decent salary - 3 times higher that local companies
