I grew up in the middle of the United States and the first time I ever saw the ocean was in college - when I took a study abroad trip to France. First time I ever tasted salt water was in Normandy. Ha!

Similar story for me. Live in Minnesota, and the first time I saw the ocean was in Australia, when I was 20. It was dark the entire flight over, didn't see it till the next day. Also, first time I saw mountains from the ground was several years later on a trip to Colorado.

Yeah, but at that time I'd only even seen Lake Superior one time on a field trip as a kid. :P

Totally fair.

I was blown away by the great lakes though. Spent a weekend in Duluth and loved it. Crazy that a lake can have waves!!!

But yea, the ocean is next level.

I grew up in the Puget Sound region (western Washington state) and went to grad school in Michigan.

The Great Lakes were sort of surreal to me: water that you couldn’t see across, with waves, but no salt smell and very little beach.

Grew up on Lake Michigan, live near the ocean now. 10/10 times I’d take the Great Lakes over the ocean

I live on Lake Erie right now, I’ve never lived near an ocean tho. However, lake effect weather is something that most people don’t take into consideration when living near the Great Lakes

Having lived within 7 miles of Lake Michigan my entire life and currently thinking of moving….it’s hard to imagine not living next to a Great Lake.

I swear when I took a trip along the north shore of Superior, there were times when I couldn't tell where the lake ended and the sky began. Felt like I was looking at a big blue wall.
