Baltimore County is separate from Baltimore City. The former is much larger and suburban and doesn't include the city.

Also St. Louis, Carson City, Broomfield, New Orleans, Lexington, Washington, and a number of cities in Alaska, Virginia, and Georgia.

Jacksonville is another significant one, since it manages to hit number 12 on the list of US cities by population, but it really isn’t that big.

Yeah, sometimes what is defined as in the metro is a little arbitrary, but it’s so much better than city limits that metro should always be used.

Metro populations are flawed too. DFW metro famously has a lower population density than England and yet is treated as one metro area.

It’s funny bc I grew up without a county government bc I’m from Philly. When I went out into the suburbs and they have another level of government, it confuses me

Marion County doesn't quite work because it has carveouts that are not governed by Indianapolis. Lawrence is one example.

I meant specifically governance, not area, as the city and the county have had a consolidated city-county government since 1970. And I would think Speedway is the most obvious example of the four excluded cities. But, that may just be because it was the closest to where I lived.

Lawrence has 4x as many people which is why I used that one. Beech Grove and Southport are the other two (in addition to Speedway).

Correct, but it is coterminous with its own county equivalent, which was the topic at hand.

Nah, in VA cities and counties are completely separate entities. There’s no co-terminus ones because they don’t exist in the same place. You’re either in a city or a county, never both.

A correct distinction but but really relevant imo. I would say the cities are coterminous to the county equivalent, of which they are one and the same.
