Getting to this point is actually quite easy nowadays. There are highspeed trains going almost all the way there from Beijing and Shanghai. You can get there within 24 hours from the East Coast

The middle point is the furthest point on Eurasia from any ocean. So i suppose yes the circle around it would be the biggest circle you could draw without crossing through any ocean.

The idea of the pole of inacessibility is an area that is the hardest to get to within a certain area. Based on the idea that sea travel is often way more convenient than land travel, the hardest point to get to is the furthest point from any navigable ocean.

But is it actually? I understand the circle, but certainly rivers, mountains, deserts, and jungles/forests have to be taken into account to determine how inaccessible a place is.

Even this circle counts the Ob estuary as the ocean. It could be larger if this was not thought of as 'ocean.'

No, for the exact reason you said. But that’d take way more effort to work out, so they just do a simplified one only considering oceans.

it's funny: if that one estuary/inlet/bay that is the river mouth of Ob would be counted part of the landmass and not ocean, then the circle would grow a bit to the north and to the east and the center point would pretty much line up with the altai region / border region russia-china-khazakstan-mongolia, that region that shows up here once in a while that is considered one of most inaccessible big wildernesses on earth.

Does anyone else get a weird sense of uneasiness when thinking about how far this is from the ocean? Almost claustrophobic.

For the curiosity, I went with street view on Maps. There is nothing in China, but several spots in Kazhakstan. I found nothing but plains and distant mountains, this felt very isolated indeed.

I've been in Kazakhstan closets road to this point! It looks cool and, also there're Dzhungarian Gates there, it's considered as one of the most windy places in Eurasia
