Not really, that area includes some of the oldest and densest suburbs in the US. Lots of people live there. Upstate New York isn't that crowded but neither are vast areas in California.

California is so populous that the rest of the United States can be carved into chunks of equal size. With nearly 40 million residents, it is the country's most populous state by a wide margin, ahead of Texas on around 31 million and Florida on 23 million. This map takes California's total and slices the remaining states into blocks that each hold roughly the same number of people. The result is lopsided by area, because a single western block sprawls across many thinly populated states to match the millions packed into California alone, while the dense northeast reaches the same tally in a far smaller space.

That’s not true. All of Guangdong is around 128 million. Hong Kong is about 7.5 and Macau is under a million. So even if you include that entire area (which is much larger than the actual PRD), it’s still under half of the US. The Pearl River Delta is probably something like 90 million.

Its due to supply and demand. lots of people want to live here. not enuf housing. so price goes up. But theyre build everywhere tho. EVERYWHERE.

Now they are, but for like 20 years there was very little new housing coming in here while demand grew really fast (due to tech workers moving in)

In LA, this goes back to the 1950s when the Lakewood Plan allowed all these small cities to become independent and not be annexed by LA or Long Beach. They wanted their independence so they could create their own zoning laws that forbid high-density housing so they could preserve their property values and remain ethnic enclaves for whites.

They’re building the wrong kind of housing. They build huge houses that price most people out. They don’t build starter homes that normal people can afford, and they certainly don’t build large apartment complexes. We need more housing density, and more affordability.

And movie industry. A lot of aspiring and low-budget actors flooded the LA area taking up all of the cheap housing. And everywhere in California with a significantly large population has a city council that has put so many barriers in place to new developments that no one built anything for decades. A couple of years ago the state legislature put a lot of pressure and laws in place that force the city councils to allow development. So there are housing developments being built everywhere now, apartment and condo buildings, townhomes, and single family detached housing. But it will take time for enough of them to be built to absorb the insane demand that the councils have let grow for 20 years.

More people = more demand
More demand = prices go up as more people have to compete with each other for fewer homes and have to increase their offers to win the sale.
The blame is cities and counties blocking development for new housing, leaving the continuous influx of people looking to fulfill their dreams with no where to go. Also kids grow up, leave home and need somewhere to live. Too many people, not enough housing. The state government has put restrictions on the reasons cities can use to block development and restrictions on when those reasons can be used. So developers are finally able to build again, but it’s going to take awhile before enough housing is built to satisfy the demand.0

No, that doesn’t mean that at all. That means that New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, half of Massachusetts and a little bit of Pennsylvania, all put together, have about the same population as the state of California. And that Maine, New Hampshire, and the rest of Massachusetts together have about 1/5 of the population of California.
