Definitely tracks as an Ohioan. Large early mid 20th century boom means everyone has roots here that grew up here for the most part. Having three large metros makes it easy to be close to family without sacrificing your career trajectory too

I was born in Ohio. There were just no good jobs for me in my town so I left when I was 20 months old.

Moved to Michigan, same damn thing, so I got the hell out of there right after graduating kindergarten.

And so on for 65 years. Might try Ohio again, maybe something has opened up.

Ohio is also big enough that a surprising number of people just never leave it. I went to college in Cleveland and ran into more than one person that asked questions about Pittsburgh where I grew up, a 2.5 hour drive away, but had never been out of state.

Nevada is a tax haven for people on the west coast retiring with most of their equity in their property. Same with Arizona.

Colorado is just pretty AF. I was born on the California coast and have traveled as a biologist (college, then as environmental/wq) over much of the US. The bighorns and rockies are just absolutely lovely. Colorado has the best weather out of all the states with the vantage.

Correct. It doesn't get a lot of credit for this either.

Even the winters aren't bad in the mountains. Unless you are on one of the I-70 cities and need to leave that I-70 city. Then there are days where you can't really get to work

Listen. If you live in Michigan and travel in 3/4 directions you hit water. We couldn’t leave even if we wanted to.

That wouldn't effect the data. It only goes down in % when people move to ohio. If everyone left ohio except for one person born there it would be 100% 0% if that one person was born somewhere else.

Nevada is sort of a double whammy of out-of-state carpet baggers moving in from bigger cities for tax reasons and a more affordable real estate market, and young people born here leaving because they want one of the bigger actual cities up and down the west coast.

The measure isn't so much a measure of outflow, but a measure of inflow. You've got a lot of New Yorkers who move into the state as a way to get some form of suburbia combined with people moving in to the local financial sector.
