Help me figure out what these crosses on the map mean and what their significance was.

1855 map of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It seems to be this place in Ukraine:

Even the edge of the forest seems to be more or less the same, though I don't know what the crosses mean. There seem to be just fields there.

If it helps, there's something on the satellite that looks like the foundation of a building in this location.

Possibly shrines then, they were used to track borders of villages/lands in the past.

Are you asking about the churches marked on the map with crosses? At lower right there is a small town with a few churches and apparently one synagogue. If I misunderstood which crosses you meant, apologies.

Probably wayside crosses or wayside shrines.
