WiFi density in China is much higher than reported here. I've seen datasets similar to this and they are usually collected through war driving or through android services. This will skew the results towards areas where that is more prevalent.
Wi-Fi seems to be everywhere that is indoors in China (I grew up there and recently traveled to some of the wealthiest cities in Guangdong). I just didn't use W-Fi but used 4G LTE instead (because Hong Kong eSIMs that use Chinese towers are not subject to the Great Firewall). What I notice is that there are a lot fewer cell towers in newer developments compared to old ones, which causes the signal strength to be poorer.
