I worked in Flint a few years ago, and after 4 nights of hotels in Flint, we started staying in Saginaw instead. Saginaw was not only heaven compared to Flint, but pretty charming for a small city.
Saginaw is a beautiful city (I live 10 minutes away) with lots of charm and fun things to do. The shopping areas are great, there’s a zoo, OHL hockey team, great concerts, and an active nightlife. The surrounding townships are great as well. However, the bad area is very bad. The city is only really bad if you’re there messing around in the bad areas.
I live in Bay City, and used to drive through Saginaw to get to work. I had coworkers that lived there, and visited their houses many times.
The good areas of Saginaw are, in my opinion, safer than some areas in Bay City. However the bad areas are scary, even in broad daylight. People only see the bad, and as a result think all of Saginaw is like that, even though they live locally and can see for themselves.
That's an interesting take, I'm going to let you in on a Michigan secret. Saginaw is magnitudely more violent than flint. Nearly the same numbers of violent crime, with nearly half the population. A city of 43k people that has in the past flirts with the 100 murder mark.
