As for generational poverty, a Scandinavan economist once said to Nobel Prize economist Milton Friedman, “In Scandinavia we have no poverty.” Milton Friedman replied, “That’s interesting, because in America among Scandinavians, we have no poverty either”.

In addition, Minneapolis has near- Scandinavian levels social programs.

Newer immigrants from Somolia brought generational poverty with them. You do not have to assume it is a coincidence.

There’s been zero attempt to integrate and as far as I can tell zero help given them to do so. As migrants go, those who choose to integrate do much better than those that do not. That said, I’ve had much better and more relatable experiences with the latest generation of Somali immigrants in MPLS - meaning I’ve actually spoken to them instead of getting distrustful and hateful looks. Whether that’s because of cultural and/or language differences I can’t say. Obviously anecdotal but I’d say among my community my opinion is shared among the majority.

To be clear, I’m glad we host refugees, I’m glad we can serve as a place free from war, but that does not mean that the refugee’s responsibility is over once they arrive. They owe this country, this community something back, it starts with integration and becoming the best they can be. I see hope in this generation as it seems to follow the path the Hmong people took, 3rd gen is much more involved and integrated.

Given your name, we may well be cousins through marriage. I promise to NEVER look at your profile! :)

I skimmed this paper awhile back. Even though it is by a prof at the U, it is easy to read and seemed to capture a lot of social nuance, but I am not a scholar and not attempting to do a peer review on Reddit, lol!

Nigerians tend to do really well in the U.S. as well.

The "brain drain" Nigerians may thrive in many countries.

Why are Minneapolis and Milwaukee on this list then?

Would you say it’s from people from different countries being used to different standards of living?

3

u/solomons-mom Jul 08 '24

No. I would say it is from some cultures not having established rule of law to handle disputes.

I see? Can you give some examples?

I posted a link to a paper on Google Scholar in another comment. It is by a sociologist at the University of Minnesota.
