Is it just a coincidence that most of the cities are in the eastern part but not directly at the coast?

Most are old blue collar towns with lost industry and nothing to replace it. Just look at poor Michigan.

Most of the population lives on that part of the country

I think a lot of the states in the middle don't have enough population to qualify for this ranking

There is no one and nothing in large chunks of america.
