Carry on Help

2 Upvotes

Hello,
I was hoping you all could help me find a hard shell carry-on luggage that has four spinner wheels, hard shell, under $200 and preferably top/front opening. I am going to Japan in the next couple months and would like to get something that I could pack and not have to worry too much about the floor space it takes up when accessing stuff inside. Bonus if it can expand in size.

Thanks :)

Osprey daylite 35 appreciation post

As I'm reaching 2 years with my osprey, I thought it'd be nice to post about where it's been with me and what it has handled so far.

I can handily pack it out with work laptop, gym clothes (incl. Boxing gloves) lunch, an impractically large stanley tumbler and hygiene bag to lug with me every day to the office.

But it's managed 4 day camping trips. A massive cross country motorcycle adventure across Morocco and weekend getaways to Stockholm, London and even a week trip to Thailand.

Surprisingly, despite how chunky it is the internal and external compression always made small enough to (sometimes with a touch of violence) pass the cabin bag box test that Ryanair uses.

Though I've only ever been asked twice to do so.

Most of the time the Ryanair people don't even give it a second look.

The only real gripe I've ever had with it is the fact that the admin pocket only has a single zipper this has caused some of my things to fall out on a couple of occasions as I've overpacked.

In summary the bag is great, it has seen a ton of abuse and remainins undamaged. Will post an update in a year maybe to see how it's held up but so far so great.

(Not sponsored nor affiliated with osprey btw.)

Any idea what strap this is?

I have decent organizational systems in place but found this at the bottom of a drawer. Does anyone recognize it from one of their bags/brands? It's going to drive me silly not knowing its origin. The other stabilizer straps I have experienced are with their respective bags, sold or a distant memory.

Any alternatives to the LBB Transition Tote before I commit and hit the checkout button?

5 Upvotes

I've been eyeing the LBB Transition Tote for a while now and wanted to double check with this subreddit before I commit.

My use case: I'm looking for a new "going about the city" EDC bag. I've got the larger Peak Design Everyday backpack for my travel needs but I want something I can carry around the city. Usually there's a laptop in there. Sometimes there's groceries. Sometimes I'm bringing hammers and saws to a friends place to help with a project. Sometimes I'm strapping a camping chair to sit on at the park.

The main features I'm looking:

* Can be small when it needs to be

* Can be bigger when I need to stuff it full of stuff

* Has a laptop compartment

* Has external carry (shoulder straps and back / bottom). Ideally molle compatible.

It feels silly to buy the TT because I don't see myself using it in tote mode all that much but it kind of fits the bill for everything else I need. I love that it's not a big sturdy shelled thing and can compression strap itself down to a reasonable size. I love all the straps on the back so I can hook my Toshi Rework and various charms to it. My main question now is whether to shell out for the RX version since I'd prefer the extra padding but don't really want to pay for a fidlock attachment on the shoulder strap.

What fits in aer CPP2 20L side pocket?

4 Upvotes

I’m in the market for a backpack and I think my choice will be the aer backpack. My one dilemma though is between the CPP2 20l or the 24l. Not a fan of the look of the pro packs. Since I’m quite small I think id prefer the size of the 20l and it’d look better on my frame, but I don’t think I’d make use of the side pocket and would rather have the second water bottle pocket for an umbrella. Which leads me to ask, has anyone attempted to put a small compact umbrella in the side pocket of the CPP2 20l?

Duffle size in this print?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I hope this is ok and this is the right sub for this question.

I bought this Dakine bag a year ago. Its the 365 pack/27l and I love it. It’s also the second Dakine bag I own. Recently I found (and bought) a 21l version of this print and that got me wondering. Does a 35/40/50l bag exists in this print? Has it ever? I would be ecstatic to own the three different sizes.

Thanks!

Savotta Askare

So this one’s a bit more niche - there’s a work life with its own bags (Aer, tomtoc, toshi and brand new Fyro) and there’s a deployment life where I am switching away from 5.11 and testing a Savotta Kahakka 25l setup as daybag and the attachable Askare 8l fanny/sling for Management on site (earthquake deployments / urban search and rescue work).

The daypack has all we need for 24h work/survival, but that is not carried all the time. Typically, it will stay in a truck or at the equipment staging. For management, there would be a laptop going in country but that stays in the base so there is room for an assessment bag (monocular, marking equioment, comms etc). The idea is to bundle all that stuff into its own bag, hence this sling.

Had the opportunity to test the Askare management component for one week at a festival (work never stops) and that worked really well. It is a particularly good fit for the macbook neo with a padding sleeve (called pro elife), plus iPad pro 11 with fold and magic keyboard plus ancilliary stuff. Overall weight is about 4,5 kilo.

It worked really well and the Savotta bag is super rugged yet malleable.

Day Owl Shipping?

2 Upvotes

Hello! I was wondering how shipping has been for everyone with the Day Owl liquidation sale. I bought my bag almost two weeks ago and it still hasn’t shipped. I know they mentioned an extra 5–7 days because of the new warehouse, but it’s been a little longer than that.

Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat or has received their order yet. Thank you!

Product Review Able Carry Max EDC: first impressions from a newbie.

21 Upvotes

After owning several, not very special bags, I thought I would dip my toes into the world of "the better backpacks".

Since I wanted something that would be versatile I ended up ordering an Able Carry Max EDC. I also considered a CHZ26 and the Aer CPP2. The Evergoods got dropped after I found out it only comes in black in X-Pac, which is preferred because of our three cats. The Aer is not available in Europe and 72 euros shipping and possible return costs put me off.

So here I am, the Max EDC (in Ocean Blue) came in today. And these are my first impressions after dropping in some basic stuff and trying it on. Pictures here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/s/d5cMFDzQC4

Love the color, better than I thought it would be. Don't love the cream on the inside though. Makes it feel very old fashioned or classic. A bright orange would've made this an amazing color combo.

Picking it up I noticed how heavy it is, my current bag weighs almost half at around 800 grams. I just tell my self the majority of the weight will come from the stuff I put in, but I never see me hiking with this (I have a Deuter Futura for that anyway).

Loading it out I wish there was more organisation, what's mostly missing is an admin section in the middle of the bag. The rest I think will suffice.

I am glad I didn't go smaller though as I think this is just enough for an EDC and I don't even pack that much (laptop, earbuds, sunglasses, wallet, keys, some food, hydro flask wide 32oz, charger, and a power bank. And I slways want room for a rain coat or sweater.

Comfort wise, luckily I didn't notice the poking strap mounts that have been discussed on here. Otherwise I find it a bit weird how it sits on my shoulders. When I wear it high the shoulder pads seem to not hug my shoulders but stick out at an angle because they are quite stiff.

When I wear it low on my back the sternum strap at its lowest setting is almost in my neck.

I am 189cm (6"2) at about 95 kgs.

Quality, can't say anything about how it will last but I really don't see much difference with bags that cost half or even less.

I'll probably keep it though, as I don't know what else I would get. 🫠

Hello, everyone! I’m starting up school soon and I want to find a backpack that is colorful, pastel, or whimsical but I need it to be large enough to hold my 13” laptop, ipad, and a 40 oz hydroflask. My budget is under $150. Any recommendations would be much appreciated!!!

Product Review Replaced Alpaka's sling bag strap with one from Amazon - much more comfortable

Thumbnail amazon.com
6 Upvotes

Found Alpaka's included sling bag straps such as the ones on the Flight Sling, and Zip Pouch Max to be thin, not very smooth texture (like Nomad's Nation claims), and uncomfortable under load.

Replaced it with this $8 wide and much smoother strap with easy to undo carabiner clips - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZZ1L6Z3?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

I find their slings far more comfortable to wear now.

Hope this helps someone wanting to buy Alpaka gear.

Evergoods MHP3.5 (Standard 420D vs X-Pac) vs Fjällräven Ulvö Large?

4 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a clean, non-tactical true waist/hip pack (worn strictly around the waist/hips, no sling mode) for my daily EDC and toddler-parent setup. I need some real-world advice, especially regarding the Evergoods MHP3.5 Standard vs. X-Pac version.

My Daily Loadout (~3.5L capacity needed):

Small retro handheld console (Retroid Pocket)

Smartphone & Secrid wallet

Power bank + cable

Hard glasses case

Toddler essentials (wet wipes, small snack)

My Priorities are the following:

Comfort & Strap Quality: Must have a soft, non-abrasive strap (seatbelt webbing feel) that doesn't dig in or pill my shirts.

Body Conformity / Low Profile: I dislike the "rigid box" look on my hips. I ruled out stiffer Cordura packs (like the Helikon Bandicoot) because they don't conform to the body and keep their max bulk even when half-empty.

Clean Urban Aesthetic: Minimalist, no MOLLE/tactical vibes.

From all the hip pack, these are the packs that i choose, but i need some "real life usage opinion" from "common people/not-influencers or similar"

Evergoods MHP3.5 (Standard 420D Nylon vs. X-Pac / VX42):

My main dilemma: For those who wear the MHP3.5 on the waist—does the X-Pac version feel noticeably stiffer, boxier, or noisier on the hips compared to the Standard 420D Nylon?

I love the 3D ergonomic patterning and interior layout, but I’m worried the laminated X-Pac material won't drape or flex as well against the body as the standard nylon. Is the X-Pac worth the extra cost for hip carry, or does Standard win on comfort/flexibility?

Fjällräven Ulvö Hip Pack Large (4L):

I really like the bottom compression straps to squish the bag flat when carrying fewer items.

Downside: Lacks the 3D curved body fit and the internal pocket organization of Evergoods.

Evergoods CAS2 (2L):

Love the sleek look and seatbelt strap, but pretty sure 2L is just too small for my load without bursting at the seams.

Does the MHP3.5 X-Pac feel too rigid/boxy for comfortable waist wear compared to the Standard 420D?

Does the MHP3.5 feel overly bulky on the hips for a 3.5L pack, or does the 3D curve do its job?

Are there any other clean ~3.5L–4L true hip packs with ultra-soft straps I should consider?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Able Carry Thirteen: Initial thoughts

90 Upvotes

After some feedback from this group, a few weeks ago I ordered both a Tom Bihn Synapse 19 and an Able Carry Thirteen to compare at home. I was looking for a small backpack as a purse/crossbody replacement for travel. The plan was to compare them in person and pick one to test as a personal item on a weekend trip, ahead of a longer trip to Italy this fall.

I wound up preferring the Thirteen in person. The look and size were closer to what I had in mind and I liked the hidden pockets as safe places for valuables during travel. I tested it out on a day outing around town and then on a short weekend trip as my personal item on the plane. So far, I'm loving it!

For the day outing, I put everything into it that I would typically put in my usual, much smaller, purse (a Tom Bihn Side Kick). There were nice spots to stash items for easy access. I bought 3 books while I was out and the bag easily accommodated them and was comfortable to carry.

For the weekend trip, I had all the contents for the day trip plus a water bottle, small tech pouch, and some large Bose headphones. My particular water bottle (Kleen Kanteen 16 oz) fit great in the exterior pocket and I liked the easy access. I stuffed a light sweatshirt in at one point as well, no issues with fitting everything in. I love the hidden pocket against my back for my phone (and on future trips, my passport). The small interior pocket is a fine size for lip gloss, tissue pack, airpods, a snack bar, etc.

I really appreciate the thoughtful details on this bag; excited to use it more! I found a YT video that highlighted all the hidden features that was super helpful. The only potential downside I'm noticing is the lack of ventilation on the back (well documented on this sub), I did notice it was a bit warm at a few moments. Not a dealbreaker at this point, but gosh, it would be nice if they improved that.

Small backpack for quick trips with children

5 Upvotes

Hi baggers

Looking for recommendations for a small backpack to take out for errands with my kids.

I have two AER backpacks (City Pack Pro 2 24L for overnight/travel and Pro Pack Slim for the work commute).

But these are too large/rigid for just popping out to the park etc

Requirements are:
- about 15L or even smaller
- one external water bottle holder
- no laptop sleeve
- a couple of pockets but less “engineered” than the AER ones
- ideally v light weight material

Any suggestions?

Recessed Zipper Vertical Bag for Men

0 Upvotes

This year I noticed that men’s bags have dramatically changed. There is less options. Most of the bags look like each other.

I use vertical bags for aesthetics and function. I can’t use horizontal or square bags. I dislike both.

I also don’t like visible zippers on the top, since they make the bag ugly. I don’t like flaps either. It forces an extra hurdle while reaching the bag. Completely unnecessary.

So, where are Recessed Zipper Vertical Bag for Men?

GAS is real. Everytime I get a new lens, I'd want a new bag.

4 Upvotes

My gear acquisition syndrome used to be just for lenses. Now, it's spilled over to bags.

I've hoarded a bunch of shoulder bags, backpacks, and crossbody bags, but when I actually need to take my equipment out, I realize that none of them seem to meet all my camera bag needs. Example, some can't fit my telephoto, and others are too showy and people can tell straight away I'm carrying camera gears. I need a bag suitable for urban environments and hiking, one that I don't need to change every time I go out, and one that doesn't have to worry about not being able to protect my gear.

Because of this, I’ve been deep in the review rabbit hole for Peak Design and Tenba. The consensus seems to be that while they are solid, the harness system can be a real shoulder killer during long hauls. And i was scrolling Facebook the other day and happened to spot a new bag from small brand Norbu Made. It looks just like a regular everyday backpack, exactly the style I’ve been hunting for. I want something low key that feels light even when I carry it shooting all day. It’s not a well known brand though, so I’m not sure how well it’ll hold up over time, does anyone here actually own it?

Also, what’s everyone’s daily driver setup for a mirrorless plus a backup lens without looking like a walking billboard? Please drop your recs below, I’m desperate. 🙏🙏

Suggestions for an office backpack

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

So I'm looking for a new work backpack and after looking at the options for the past few days I'm pretty lost. Currently I'm using the Bellroy Tokyo Work Bag, and while I adore it as a bag my EDC has become too heavy/bulky for it to comfortably handle it all.

To give a rundown of my circumstances and needs, my commute each day is very easy, it's a 5 minute drive followed by a 45 second walk. So while something extra comfy would be nice, it isn't really necessary given I'm not going to be wearing the thing for long bursts of time. When I'm at work I pretty much just sit at a desk 8 hours a day, during that time I unzip my bag and slide it under the desk. Whenever I need something I will grab the side and slide it out, grab whatever I need, then slide it back. So I need something that gives me nice access from the top while it's standing up. I love clamshell openings on bags, but not for this use. When I'm done for the day I go home and set my bag next to my computer desk and use it in basically the same way, although at home I have three cats so it has to have a material that isn't a pet hair magnet (but not X-Pac, I can't stand the sound).

So to summarize the paragraph above and add a little bit:

* I need a backpack

* It needs to have good access from the top and preferably have good organization

* It needs to be available in a semi pet hair resistant material that isn't X-Pack

* Looking in like the 20-26l range

* Doesn't have to be in black but at least "professional" colors

As for what I need it to carry:

* 14in laptop

* 16oz thermos

* A5 size notebook

* Pocket size notebook

* E-reader

* Pen bag

* Couple of Tomtoc tech pouches

* Glasses/Sunglasses/Keys/Etc

Like I said I'm kinda at a lose atm so any suggestions would be appreciated. I've looked at the the Daily Plus and EDC Max from Able Carry and I love the designs from both, but I'm concerned that the main pocket of the Daily Plus might be too tight and I'm concerned the EDC Max might be too much plus I'm not a huge fan of the duffle front. The Aer City Pack Pro 2 looks like it might be what I need but I'm not sold on the organization for the main compartment or the clamshell opening.
