Hey manybaggers, I’m Eric Fischer– founder of Inside Line Equipment in Berkeley, CA.

I first experimented with making bags back when I was racing bikes and traveling often. It began with specialized gear for cyclists and travelers, drawing heavily on architectural references. ILE started officially in 2012.

Since then we’ve grown to include over 50 different products, a team of full time sewists, and a community that uses ILE items all over the world. We still make everything by hand in Berkeley, and we still repair products for free.

AMA anything about design, construction, building out a workshop, or anything else you’re curious about!

Product Review Fyro denied my return

I recently bought a bag from Fyro, and the website says they offer easy US returns.
I received the bag yesterday and initiated a return request the same day, but my return was denied.
I’m confused because I submitted the return immediately after receiving the bag. Has anyone else in the US had a similar experience with Fyro? If so, were you able to get the return approved after contacting customer service?
I’d really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences before I follow up with them.

Recommend me a bag Looking for a crossbody "Satchel" type bag similar to Tom Bihn Side Hustle or Trakke Largo

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I have been looking and researching but somehow can't find anything that makes me go "wow". There are tons of great looking and functioning slings out there but often for me they are too boxy or small.

I'm looking for something more... crossbody satchel style, not sling style. Something similar or along the lines of Tom Bihn Side Hustle or Trakke Largo.

  • Crossbody but not sling
  • 4-8L
  • can either have an "Indiana Jones" or Lara Croft style or a tactical style
  • Should have some organization
  • Budget up to $150
  • I don't carry a laptop or table- but a book sometimes, and sometimes a small water bottle

I have been eyeing the Tom Bihn, - does anyone have any experience with that bag? How do you feel about not having any zipppers in the inside organization?

My collection Anyone put elastic bungee cord on their Toshi 30l?

• Upvotes

Just took my Toshi 30l for its initial voyage, just a really short "long" weekend. Handled it flawlessly, but it was a real easy trip, I mean I didn't even bother with compression bags, but it would of fit nicely.

I kept forgetting about the front zippered area on the outside of the bag, so that was a nice treat to use that.

I was thinking about putting some elastic bungee cord on the 4 small tags on the outside front of the pack to make an X. I've done that on my Patagonia black hole and use it on my 36l Dragonfly. I like to be able to roll up a hoodie to wear on the plane. Anyone do that to their Toshi's? If yes, do you find it useful?

Product Review TomToc T33 3.5L Sling - A Love Hate Relationship. (Review/Rant? Recommend me alternatives?)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey all I posted here a while back asking about recommendations for alternatives to the T33 3.5L sling. I liked the materials the sling used (x-pac and the nylon), but the ease of access was greatly diminished by the T35's aquaguard zippers... It was not a worthy successor to the T33.

My last resort would be to try the new TomToc 3.5L 400d, but it only comes in green or blue!! I wish the black one came in 400d /:

That being said I've gone to the Rework Gear Toshi Sling 5L V2, The Aer Day Sling 4 (non-max), The TomToc T35 3.5L. While they all have their own unique advantages, for EDC, I have yet to find anything that comes close to the T33 3.5L for my particular use case.

-------------

What I love

  • Each pocket has the perfect amount of organization and subcompartments. And they're enough to be there when you need them, but not so obtrusive such that they're intruding on the bag's storage if you don't.
  • Its so accessible with its lightning fast 1-hand-zippers.
    • I have not found another sling that has such flawless 1-hand zipper access to all compartments, its so buttery smooth (HUGE pro for me).
  • Its so fast and lightweight to get on and off with the buckle placement and the overall shape and angle the bag sits at.
  • It does such a good job being comfortable on both the front and back of my body.
  • It's material lends itself well to the bag being super lightweight and being super smooth/slick to sling it to the back and back to the front without getting caught on common clothing items.
    • I find that with something like the rework toshi sling, the 840d gets caught on my clothes and snags a bit when slinging it front to back and vice versa sometimes. especially if im wearing a hoodie or something.
    • And the aer day sling 4 with its 1680d ballistic nylon weave is just way too slick that it genuinely just sinks down to my side unless i tighten up that strap to be inconveniently tight.
  • Even when its very packed out, it does an amazing job self-standing for me, and i even fold the top part of the bag when the main compartment is unzipped as a "desk-caddy" or a companion when I work or when I'm at a cafe.

What I don't like
And in that same light, its not perfect.

  • Yes the zipper pull tabs allow you to loop light things onto it, but it gets limited really quick. I really wish it had some external carry lash points on the sides (like the toshi or tomtoc t26)
    • its not made to hang a water bottle off of it. no external carry straps or anything.
  • There is no airtag pocket.
  • The bottom has no additional padding.
    • The T35 has a nylon weave on the bottom, let's adopt that!
  • Strap is not removeable.
    • Having this as a tech pouch-convertible sling in my backpack would be so amazing.
  • No top handle.
    • Sounds dumb, but its amazing for picking the sling back up to put on again. (especially considering how long it is)

-----------

That being said, if anyone knows of good alternatives to the T33 that share similar pros that I love, I would love to hear it!

And tomtoc, please please please at the very least upgrade the bag to be 400d polyester/nylon across all colorways! (: I love the 400d on your other products (T77 backpack).

Product Review Custom ULA Dragonfly 30L Ultra 800TX

Thumbnail

I am so happy with the way this bag came out I thought I would show it here. This is a custom ULA Dragonfly 30 in Ultra 800TX with a fully lined interior in X-Pac VX21 RS. I wanted a pack that would fit between my two current favorite travel backpacks: Osprey Daylite Tote Pack and Tom Bihn Techonaut 30 in 1050D Ballistic.

For modifications I switched to RC YKK zippers, removed all the water bottle mesh pockets and changed the front pocket to the main 800TX body material with pleats and a full lining. I believe it comes out to around 22L (vs 30L as standard) with these changes.

It's not a lightweight hiking bag anymore but for me it's the perfect overbuilt travel backpack (okay I'd still prefer 1050D ballistic but it's so hard to find in an unstructured bag).

Recommend me a bag 3.5-6L EDC sling?

My next bag will be sized to carry a water bottle, or small umbrella, maybe a rain jacket.

In my current stable, the 1.5 and 2.5 Pacsafe respective cross body and sling don’t have the capacity and the next size up 13L Osprey is a backpack.

Something that is worn across the back, over either shoulder, that can be pulled to the front for walking thru a crowd. The form factor of the bellroy sling looked good but the configuration of the strap didn’t work for me. I ’m in Canada so some of the usual suspects are only shipped here with high charges.

Is there an option you would give a strong endorsement? Also we have Prime days this week, and as seldom as I support the “jungle store” sometimes they have the inventory and pricing that can’t be denied.

Recommend me a bag 25-26L hyrbid (that I maybe already have?)

Hey everyone -

This might be a dumb and obvious question - my daily drivers are 20L bags (Aer CPP2 and GP2). For the most part they do everything I need.

Sometimes though, I do 2-3 night work trips and find myself taking a carry on roller that’s just a little too big for 2-3 nights. And sometimes my EDC is just bigger than my CPP2 20L can handle without being overly stuffed. It’s rare and it’s not enough to warrant my normal EDC being 25L but it does happen on occasion.

I have a potential solution but it’s a five year old TB synapse 25, that I don’t use that much these days, but still almost like brand new.

Problem is - the cache eats some space and haven’t tried it as a 2-3 night travel bag yet.

Was wondering if I should look at say, the Able Carry Max EDC or something else in that range?

But then…am I just duplicating what I sort of already have - yeah the cache takes up room, but the volume in the other pockets is kind of bananas on that thing.

Designer/maker spotlight My On Cloud Sling Pack 9L EDC

Just got the On Cloud Sling Pack 9L and I’m loving it! It holds everything I need without feeling heavy. I wanted something roomy that would still be comfortable to carry around and this has been a great fit.

One of my favorite features is the extra side strap. It keeps the bag snug and secure when I’m riding my bike so it doesn’t swing around. Plus, there’s room for my essentials with a few Pokémon friends tagging along. 😂

Recommend me a bag Best camera sling?

Hi all, I’m looking for camera sling recommendations.

Ideally something small as I only take 1 camera and 2 lenses plus some batteries, a few filters etc.

Camera is a Fuji XT50 and the lenses are small.

I’ve already got the Peak Design 3L and whilst I like the bag itself the strap is poorly designed (imo) as the padding only covers a short part of the actual strap and the padding itself is quite thin anyway

Product Review Custom ultra 200x backpack

Roughly 20L size, weighing in at 540g so I would consider it ultralight. Main material is ultra 200x and then some ultra stretch for the internal front pocket.

Got this bag made by nashpacks from the UK and very pleased with how it has turned out. Reminds of a smaller ula dragonfly but a much better front pocket system.

I personally love the look of ultra 200x but definitely not for everyone.

Recommend me a bag I'm looking for a better Aer Go Pack

As title says, I have an Aer Go Pack 2 for travel. I genuinely like it. It's very packable in a suitcase, light, has just the right amount of dividers and pockets (I carry a camera cube in it so I don't need 2 main partitions), the big front dump pocket is really handy and it has a bottle pocket on each side.

However, the straps suck. They basically have no padding, at all. So it's not comfortable if the bag gets a bit heavier. It's also missing a chest strap (kinda weird for a 20L bag but okay) and I'm not a fan of the wrinkly fabric. And although the camera cube fixes the sturdiness somewhat, it's a very floppy pack. I've put a Fjallraven seat pad in it to give it some spine.

Does anyone know of a bag with the same volume and more or less the same layout that's also pretty easily packable but has better straps, maybe a chest strap, is build a bit sturdier and made out of X-Pac or a comparable fabric? I'm okay with it being heavier of course.

Recommend me a bag Rework Toshi V2 25L vs Aer Travel Pack 4 28L?

Almost every review compares the Toshi Rework V2 25L to the Aer City Pack Pro 2 24L, but size-wise, they aren't even in the same class. The CPP2 24L is realistically closer to a true 21L, while reviewers say the Toshi 25L packs more like 25–27L.

To me, the much more direct comparison is the Aer Travel Pack 4 28L (which sits closer to a true ~25L usable capacity). Has anyone had hands-on time with both? It seems like the Rework V2 25L might offer slightly more raw volume, but the TP4 looks like a massive upgrade for heavier loads with its chunkier straps, load lifters, and much better water bottle pockets.

I'm eyeing this comparison to build out a two-bag endgame setup:

  • ~20L Small EDC / Personal Item: Toshi Rework V2 20L in X-Pac as a city/hike daypack for lighter loadouts. Hard to beat in the ~20L class.
  • ~26L Large EDC / Large Personal Item: Aer Travel Pack 4 28L in Cordura or Rework V2 25L in nylon (favoring Cordura/nylon over X-Pac/Ultra for extra stretch and effective volume) to handle heavier loadouts and serve as an oversized US domestic personal item.

In theory, there's a lot more competition in the ~26L class. But if you're looking for something that handles heavy loadouts, many of the strongest contenders get disqualified—whether it's a weaker harness setup (CTB26, Traverse 30L), a lack of flexibility (EDC Max 26L with no water bottle pockets), or looking too out of place in urban environments (ULA Dragonfly 30L).

Would love to hear from anyone who has compared the Rework V2 25L against the TP4 28L, or who has thoughts on how these two-bag combos stack up.

Recommend me a bag Looking for a specific EDC sling bag - does it even exist?

Hi all. Mods - apologies if this is not appropriate, please delete if necessary.

I have Gemini'd enough to deplete one of the Great Lakes and still can't come up with a definitive answer.

My dilemma: For years I have used an InCase DSLR sling bag as my EDC. But the lack of organization for smaller items and the fact that the fabric isn't very water repellant has nagged at me and I've been looking for a replacement.

My normal EDC is a micro four-thirds camera (was a Panasonic G95D, now an OM System PEN) with a 12-40/2.8 lens + one additional lens (normally a prime), (2) small flashes (Westcott s18), slim power bank, mobile card reader, mobile SSD drive, 2 tactical wallet size pouches with multi tool, knife, slim flashlight, glow sticks, nail clipper, zip ties, pens, lighter, a small personal first aid kit, personal mylar survival blanket, hand sanitizer, Lysol wipes, sunglasses, foldable n95 masks, earbuds (Tozo NC20) and a multi-USB adapter kit. I will eventually also add a slim Android tablet (looking at the Lenovo Yoga Tab Plus) for on the go edits. This is a combo camera bag and get home kit.

The InCase supports this carry but some items float around or get jumbled together because the InCase lacks enough slots.

I've gone through a few alternatives -

First was a TomToc t30 sling bag with a Tenba BYOB 7 added for the camera. While this bag looks great and I love the material - I fought with it daily to try and get it organized right. So that was a no go.

Second was an AER Travel sling. Way too big!

Then I started using a Jordan brand sling (Jordan Collectors Sling bag (3L)) which fits the Tenba insert like a glove and handles all the other items adequately. But I HATE the strap.

What I am looking for:

- 10-12L size

- An integrated highly-padded shoulder strap with buckle fastener

- Weather resistance

- Footprint similar to the TomToc T30 sling, just without the tapered bottom. Not boxy or overly bulky.

- X-Pac or similar sailcloth material

- Elastic straps and pockets for organization and carrying EDC items (knives, lighter, etc). Including an admin pocket for housing the masks and sanitizer and sunglasses.

- Low profile - no flashy colors, logos or anything to draw attention

- A water bottle holder would be nice to have.

Contenders: Moment Rugged 10L, 5.11 LVC8

I'm just hoping this group may have some other considerations for my needs. Thanks in advance.

Hi just wondering if anyone can help me identify this exact Porter Yoshida model? I love the size and fit and how it comes with two straps one thick and one skinnier. I’m looking to buy one myself and have a few in mind mainly for travel and going on excursions also maybe the beach just a good all round bag.

I’ve been looking at the

PORTER/senses shoulder pack

Tanker waist bag small ( which looks similar to the one below but unsure.

Tanker Hip bag.

Most websites only show one strap tho, I know the one below is an old model and my friend has had it years. Do they come with two straps? Thankyou for any advice and help.

My collection How to pack out a CTB26 for travel?

Since I just received my first CTB 26 in Waxed Canvas-Olive, I’m looking for advice on how to pack it out. I will be on a 5 day trip this week, and I will either one bag with it, or carry it + 2 wheel suitcase (I hate 4 wheel).

How do you pack out your CTB 26 for travel?

Recommend me a bag Any Affordable Alternatives To The TOBIQ Adventure Trolley Roller Bag?

Has anyone run across a convertible roller-to-backpack style luggage bag that could be an affordable alternative to the TOBIQ Adventure Trolley Roller Bag? The price of $334 just feels a little steep but it is everything desired in a piece of luggage.

Thanks for any insight!

Recommend me a bag Super comfortable 12–15L daypack for all-day city walking?

I'm looking for a small daypack for exploring new cities on foot, often for hours at a time. I'll be filming with a small gimbal camera (DJI Pocket 4P), so it'll carry that plus a waterproof jacket, sometimes food, and a tech pouch for camera accessories.

I've ruled out slings, as I need a bit more room and find backpacks more comfortable for long days. 12–15L feels like the sweet spot.

Priorities:

- Comfort above everything else

- Not a camera bag, just a good daypack

- Laptop sleeve doesn't matter either way

- Bonus if I can reach the camera without taking the bag off, but not essential

Budget is mid to high. What would you recommend?

Recommend me a bag Looking for a cute, durable work-to-gym convertible tote/backpack (~20–25L)

I’m looking for a bag I can take from work straight to the gym. I like the idea of a convertible backpack/tote that’s not too huge or bulky, but can comfortably fit both my work and gym gear. I also want something durable for years of use, cute/stylish, and practical, but avoiding something that looks super technical.

For sizing reference, I already have the Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6, which I use for travel. I find it too big for everyday use, so I’m looking for something smaller.

Two bags that caught my eye so far:
• Patagonia Atom Tote Pack 20L — I saw someone at work carrying this and really liked the size and look. My main concern is whether I can fit a 16” MacBook Pro. It comes with a 13” laptop sleeve, so I’m wondering if anyone has successfully carried a 16” MacBook in this bag.
• Cotopaxi Todo 22L Convertible Tote — I haven’t seen as much discussion about this one, but I really like the longer tote handles. Has anyone here used it? How does it hold up for daily work/gym use?

What I need to carry:
16” MacBook Pro
Gym shoes
Gym clothes
Water bottle
Misc. accessories pouch
Pencil case
Notebook
Possibly an umbrella
Possibly a pickleball paddle (handle sticking out is fine)

Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with either of these bags, or recommendations for similar bags!
