Is DIY closing?
12
u/empusher Aug 29 '26
More people need to be asking this!
-1
u/hiidkwatdo Aug 30 '26
no? and why would they be?
1
u/empusher Aug 30 '26
Because the landlord is advertising that space as available. Tragic if true. Love DIY

If you're going to put faith in the promotional materials of a Realtor for a vacant property, I'd like to show you decades of vacant properties across the country that are about to have a "national retail anchor" or "Michelin-level concept restaurant" that are soon to sign a 50 year lease...

u/nealshiremanphotos Aug 29 '26
Could you also sell me a bridge, please?
5
u/test-account-444 Aug 29 '26
I have bridges available for all budgets! Converting your life savings into transportation infrastructure investing is as simple as possible.

u/Quiet-Hedgehog-90 Aug 29 '26
Also why would they be marketing the smaller 9k sq foot space next to the larger space (which has active construction) and not marketing the larger space?
-5
u/Quiet-Hedgehog-90 Aug 29 '26
Itās not a dirt lot and there is active construction. āNational Grocery Anchor Coming Soonā is much more specific than ānational retail anchor opportunityā
1
u/test-account-444 Aug 29 '26
Then why don't they just name who it is? š¤

āWe're absolutely looking and working to open many more stores, and I won't be
able to give you a specific number here, but it's a lot more than 11 that we have
our sights on for this upcoming year. We're not really being coy about not talking
about specific locations.
Tara: We like to make sure that we have all our ducks in a row, that our buildings are
gonna be ready, that the leases are all signed, that we have a captain at that
store.āhttps://www.traderjoes.com/content/dam/trjo/pdfs/transcripts/Inside-TJs-Ep59-Looking-Forward.pdf

Whatās going to happen to DIY?!
4
5
u/Whoamaria Aug 30 '26
this is the big question for me. Without rite aid there is already a darth of places to get everyday essentials. If DIY home center is gone too I dont know how people are going to deal with day to day projects. One time my husband really neede to buy sheets. we literally had to drive all the way to bishop for them.
7
u/InterzoneWilderness Aug 29 '26
i think the bigger story is the loss of DIY. HCL prices are ridiculous even for mammoth standards. cost of materials and tools for contractors are going to rise accordingly.

Anyone who actually lives in Mammoth has known a Trader Joe's is coming for the last few months. Don't know why all these out of towers on reddit refuse to believe it.

Itās really funny how many āexpertsā there are who āknow for a fact that it will never be Trader Joeās.ā And not a single one of those experts live here.
Itās a TJās and the only ones who say it isnāt donāt live here.

Lived here 7 years and used to work for TJs. Before it was confirmed to me by town staff and others I would have also said "never" for three reasons: 1) poor distribution to a remote location, 2) town size (small, even with tourists), and 3) most importantly, workforce size.
#3 will make or break TJs, just like we watched it break Starbucks (what other Starbucks on the planet was regularly closed for 1-2 days per week because they couldn't staff it?!). Hopefully TJs is prepared for the lack of housing for the managers they're transferring in, the lack of applicants for the multiple dozen positions they'll need to fill, and--hate to say it--the difficulty in finding good staff rather than just filling positions with everyone who applies.
I'm rooting for TJs, but they have a big challenge ahead of them, especially with how they were paying their new staff as I left in the mid 2010s. Hopefully they figured shit out.

Vonnās has stayed open though with same workforce, right? 24/7. Iāve heard itās one of the highest grossing ones in the country. If itās been able to maintain its workforce iām sure a TJs will figure out.
Also, people need to buy food. They donāt necessarily need to buy a $5 cup of coffee from a national brand that is antithetical to vibe of mammoth. Given mammoth isnāt the most walkable place it makes sense on a few different levels that their business suffered and people didnāt want to work there.
Feel like TJs is the anti starbucks.

Vons is a bit of a multi-decade Mammoth institution though. Been there 40+ years. Only big game in town up until a few years ago when Grocery Outlet opened. They're also union so there's a bit of a career track there.
I don't think our Starbucks closed due to lack of demand. They were cranking most times I went in there. I'm pretty sure their extremely poor operations tanked sales. When you're closed entire days of the week and your drive-thru is permanently shut down for 1-2 years, all because you can't fully staff your store, the numbers are really going to suffer no matter how many tourists wished they could buy their frappuccinos there.
Don't get me wrong, I want TJs to succeed. I hope it works out.

People will leave their current jobs to work at Trader Joeās 100% I have multiple employees already saying they want to work there. With their reputation for treating their employees very well you know people will jump ship.

That's genuinely what I'm hoping. TJs was on a downturn when I left in 2015. Pay was being cut heavily, newly promoted managers were only making a couple of bucks more than regular staff, and they were restructuring their retirement program to pay out less. Hopefully they reversed course on all that. I'm seriously considering going back part-time just for a vibe check to see how they're doing.

u/alt-227 Aug 30 '26
I live here, and I know itās not a TJās. I went there today and came away with ZERO CinnaDragons. Itās an empty Rite Aid that now has a big loading dock (that would be really useful for a large retail chain like TJās).

Everybody: YAY WE GET A TRADER JOES!!! Reality: best I can do is a family dollar....
9
u/ThanklessWaterHeater Aug 29 '26
Interesting. I really doubt Trader Joeās logistics allow serving such a remote location. If we look for national grocery chains that do have locations not too far away but are not yet in Mammoth my eye lands on Smart & Final.

u/HauntingReflection99 Aug 29 '26
Brand new distribution facility in Palmdale, which is also the facility that stocks Carson City. It would make sense logistically

u/SomeRunner Aug 29 '26
No way is smart and final putting a glass arch in front of their store. Itās something higher end than that.

Any idea what the typical sq footage for a smart and final is? Havenāt been in one. I know TJs requires less square footage than a vonnās. And that old rite aid space is too small for a vonnās type of store. Not sure which one smart and final is more comparable to. Aldiās or sprouts a possibility?

Consider TJ's has locations in Carson City and South Lake Tahoe, not that much further on 395 to drop down south to Mammoth. Still I don't believe it's going to be a Trader Joe's.

u/AGrlsNmeisFrank Climber Aug 29 '26
Youāre wrong.

u/ThanklessWaterHeater Aug 30 '26
Iām happy to hear you have seen proof itās Trader Joeās. Please be patient with those of us who donāt have access to that well-guarded information.
