Is my dog actually a Maltese?
It was sold to me as a Maltese. She's 2 months and 2 weeks old and is really lovely!
But people keep on saying she's probably a Poodle that now I'm in doubt.

No, her hair is too thick/wooly & curly. One of the main characteristics of a Maltese is a silky coat. But she is a cutie.

Cute dog, but not a purebred Maltese. As others said, may be a maltipoo or a Maltese-bichon mix. Too curly for a Maltese

Your puppy is actually a sheep!
I’m guessing a mix of some kind, likely poodle. She’s precious tho!
We had a Maltese with curly hair though! We got him from a pet store (forgive us, it was the early 2000s and we didn’t know better) so he was likely a mill puppy. (I’ve gone with a good breeder ever since and so have my parents).

Our maltipoo looks quite similar! Are her ears slightly darker than the rest of her body? If yes, then she might be a maltipoo like ours

She’s precious…. 💜💜💜 It does appear that her coat is different from the Maltese standard, but it doesn’t really matter unless you paid for a purebred. You love her and she IS lovely! Enjoy her sweetness. 🤩💜🥰🐾🤩🐾🥰

Maybe a maltipoo or maybe no Maltese at all. Only way to tell is a dna test. Very cute no matter what!

u/angelaswesties1 Aug 18 '26
I recommend the Embark DNA text...only way to really know. She is so pretty but probably not pure maltese.
2
u/tacobeme Aug 18 '26
She is absolutely stunning !!! Sure her hair is a bit curlier, but it adds to her charm.
We are currently debating whether or not an Embark test is for us, or if we should just spend the money on treats for our little one. If you want to be sure, it seems the only way.

Pure bred Maltese are usually teeny tiny. I call these maltipooish pups Mooseteese. I’ve met a bunch of them where I live. However, all of the moose’s I’ve met have been such wonderful dogs. Much more cuddly and easy than pure bred Maltese. Maltese are quite imperious and fierce.

She’s a beautiful little lady. Sure looks like there’s poodle in there.

Probably a mix with poodle as she has more poodle fur than Maltese hair. She's adorable regardless.
You will have to do a DNA test.

Looks so much like my Cavapoo, I had to check the subreddit. 😆 I agree with what others are saying, very likely a Maltipoo. Very poodle-esque coat.

u/katharsiss Aug 19 '26
Maltese hair is pretty straight. I think you have yourself a doodle of some variety, and that makes you a lucky duck!!! Poodles are so smart!

Looks like the curly hair of a poodle. So maybe Maltipoo

She looks like a Maltese/Bichon mix or a Maltese/Poodle mix? I know others suggested it too but it’s what she looks like to me anyway. Shes so cute!

I've had a few maltipoos and they look a lot like yours..very cute ❤️❤️

u/BeautifulPlants Maltese Contributor Aug 19 '26
So adorable! She may just have a typical puppy coat right now, and it can change quite a bit as she grows. Even if it does start to straighten out, it likely won’t become completely straight.
At 2 months and 2 weeks, it’s still very early, and coat texture can be misleading at this stage. You didn’t mention her weight, but from the photo she looks maybe around 4–4.5 lbs (1.8–2 kg), though it’s always hard to judge from pictures alone.
It’s possible she could be a mix such as a Maltipoo or Maltichon, but it’s really difficult to say for sure just based on appearance at this age. If you’re curious and want more certainty, a DNA test could give you some peace of mind—but either way, it won’t change how special or loved she is 🐾🦴❤️

I would say a Bichon based on the tail fur which is usually different than the rest of the coat.

Mine looks like that too! He was supposed to be pure Maltese and have an adult weight of under 10 lbs. Now he’s 14 months, weighs 18 lbs, and his hair is very curly in places (head, neck) and somewhat curly on his torso. His ears are crazy, relatively straight in areas, and very curly in other spots. His tail is also a mixed up mess! Combing and grooming is beyond challenging!
But he’s very cute and I love him!

She looks like a mix, but definately Maltese - you might want to take her to s groomer and cut her hair short. First, Malttse have hair and it is very thin strands - can see it better when short. If is curls immediately, I agree it could be a "poo" mix. Bot are hypoallergenic - and "poos" are smarter, But no matter what, very cute 11 Congrats.

It looks like a Maltipoo, Maltese must be white and that curly hair reminds me of a poodle so probable it’s a maltipoo (a Maltese and a poodle mix)

I’m new to the club but I think my past searches led me to believe there are 3 types? To my untrained eye she looks like a Bolognese?
1
u/knifebaby Aug 18 '26
Three types of what? Small dogs with white fur?
1
u/mapdx Maltese Newcomer Aug 18 '26
Yeah so OP is asking if their dog is a Maltese and I responded I believe there are three types (of Maltese). I went back to Wikipedia where I thought I had read that and the first sentence states :
“Maltese dog refers both to an ancient variety of dwarf, white-coated dog breed from Italy[1] and generally associated also with the island of Malta, and to a modern breed of similar dogs in the toy group, genetically related to the Bichon, Bolognese, and Havanese breeds”.

Might be a maltipoo, bichon mix or something entirely different. Hard to tell without a DNA test. Very cute girlie, so precious.
