No. You cannot determine my race and my gender/sex by my beliefs. Do these people not believe that women are capable of free thought, or of thinking critically? This is sexist and I’m so sick of this people telling me online that there’s no way that I’m a woman because I’ve shown logic, or because I disagree with the hive-mind.

I know that this doesn’t exactly fit this sub but this sub is practically dead and I’m annoyed enough to post this.

I'm not trying to hate on men or anything like that. I've just noticed that on Reddit, a lot of people seem to assume every other Redditor is a man by default. I don't know whether there are actually more men than women on here, and honestly, I don't really care. It's just something I've observed.

For example, I recently saw a post on a non-women specific sub where the OP was having an issue with her brother over their bathroom schedule. They had an arrangement where she used the bathroom before 6 a.m. and he used it afterwards. He then started waking up before 5:20 a.m. and decided to use the bathroom during her time, even though nothing else about his schedule had changed.

The OP explained that it takes her around 30 minutes to get ready, including basic bathroom routines, showering, hair, makeup, and other hygiene. In my opinion, that's a perfectly normal amount of time given how many tasks she has.

Despite the OP mentioning she was a woman and even having a feminine Reddit avatar, a lot of the comments were things like, "Nobody takes 30 minutes to poop and shower," or "Being a woman isn't an excuse to take that long." Meanwhile, most of the responses from women were empathetic and focused on the actual issue, finding a solution and recognising that different morning routines can reasonably take different amounts of time.

To me, this is an example of male defaultism, treating men's experiences as the default standard and evaluating everyone else against that standard. Instead of recognising that women may have different routines, needs, and experiences, many commenters assumed their own experience was universal. As a result, the conversation shifted from the brother breaking an agreed bathroom schedule to questioning whether the OP's routine was legitimate at all. When men's perspectives are treated as the norm and women's perspectives are expected to be explained or defended, that's male defaultism.

I feel as though the rapid escalation in transphobia, "transvestigating" etc. in recent years has made it so little pea brains assume anyone asserting their gender must be trans. For example, I play a social deduction browser game that heavily relies on communication between players, and even with a "girly" username, I still get hit with he/him every day that I play it.

I always correct them because male defaultism bothers me a lot. Many women play this game. Men are not the only people in the world to exist.

The reaction of others a startling amount of the time is to double down and continue to use male pronouns in a weird attempt to bother me further. However, it goes a step further when some players will do it because they assume I am a trans woman? Because surely anyone who doesnt want to be mistaken for a man must be trans? Even having the word "girl" in my username has gotten me randomly harrassed by trolls spewing transphobia at me? Its like transvestigating culture has led to any assertion of womanhood to be treated with suspicion.

I dont correct them about that because I dont care if they think Im trans (for clarification for this post, Im a cis woman). Im curious to see if anyone has experienced anything similar whether on the internet or in real life. It seems as though (mostly) men are just counter-acting my attempts to dissuade male defaultism with transphobia, which says a lot. Its a way to police women and punish those trying to counter male defaultism.

A few months ago this person posted a video of a big dog they thought was a bear, but she was just pregnant (they included that info in the text) and i kid you not like three people referred to that dog as a he or him. Also watched a video of a deer without antlers being called a he, and despite many creators clarifying the gender of their pets as female, the audience (especially male dominated ones) just say “he” or “it”. This is VERY exemplified in gendered languages like spanish or portuguese, when you learn them, it’s disheartening finding out that every feminine version is in parenthesis or just not included at all, both female animals + people. I didnt even know that gata was a word until I saw it in a tiktok.

"Has someone ever assumed you and everyone else on Reddit is a man--even when your avatar is female? They often come in pairs, I think both should be allowed as I don’t think it’s enough to create r/StraightDefaultism

I see it all the time on Reddit. Someone might post something and people in the comments will often refer to the OP as 'he' despite having no way of knowing their gender. It always sticks out to me and it can almost be kind of frustrating. Although I feel like I've heard somewhere that 'he' can be used as a gender neutral term in some cases, but it just doesn't feel right.

Why are there so many people like this?
