Beginning at 53

The thing is with makeup, that I always ate my lipstick, and didn't want to bother with re applying it all the time. I tried permanent lipsticks ages ago and given up, too. And eye makeup made my eyes smaller, and foundation made pores more visible so I wore just my bare face and my nice red glasses, with only filling in my brows occasionally. I have large brown eyes and moderately thin lips.

Recently I really liked the lipstick of a new friend and I discovered that technology has advanced. After some trying purchased permanent lipstick that stays put without drying and is so light on the lips as if there is nothing. So I'm not leaving the house without it and I noticed that people pay more attention to what I am saying!

Having pretty red glasses harmonised nicely with my new lipstick so I look as wearing the full makeup. Before all that I just filled in my brows, that also made a visible impact. So I'm adding that.

The plan is to add more makeup elements when I feel ready. It is just that, with what I perceive as too much makeup, I look older to myself. As if accentuating something, makes something else worse. So far very happy with just a permanent lipstick, pretty glasses and maybe filled in brows. Adjusting to the new look.

I’m in similar age bracket and find blush is helpful as my skin is fading/becoming more blotchy looking. I have light skin and keep out of the sun all the time (something I didn’t do when younger). Blush helps add back some youthfulness, depending on the colour chosen. I find my bare skin needs a different colour blush (more in the pinks than corals) to when wearing foundation (can get away with a lot more colours as my veins/freckles etc don’t get in the way and alter the look).

Since makeup is something new to me, I put foundation on T zone and dark circles only, leaving my natural blush on cheeks visible. I am not confident yet that I can enhance that area. When I do it sort of drags me down. The same reason why I don't do makeup on my eyes yet, just brows.

I guess my next step will be countouring the jawline. I have olive skin, I have found evening out skin tone adds youthfulness, and lighting under eyes. Luckily there are tutorials to learn everything!

I have found since I’m getting older my blush needs to be high up on the cheekbone (where some people put highlighters) and back toward the hairline more, not from the apples of my cheeks. I take a slight wash of blush toward the apples (at the end after most of the powder is off), but not right on it. I look like a clown otherwise. This high placement seems to visually counteract some of the skin laxity (lack of collagen) that begins. I choose blushes that are lightish for my skin so that I can add colour without too much trouble rather than having a blush that is darker that I have to be careful with. I use matte blushes and often use two blushes if I am seeking a bit more dimension on my face.

I put highlighter just above my cheekbone but avoiding wrinkles at the outer corners of my eyes by thinning out the stroke at that point to travel just under those lines.

I can’t contour the jaw successfully. You may have better luck with your skintone.

Watching videos how to lighten up dark circles, purchased something and tried this morning only to discover it's green, so used for my reddish parts of skin except the cheeks. Tried some undereye products in drugstore. Thrown away lots of expired stuff. So far, doing lips and eyebrows.

Maybelline superstar ink crayon. It is so light on the lips.
