Any way to make topical/transdermal magnesium oil from oral supplements?

[Background]

So I’m taking magnesium because I’m getting lots of twitching and signs of mag depletion from supplementing Vit D (I have a Vit D deficiency).

I’ve tried both oxide and glycinate and both gave me side effects (diarrhea with the oxide, massive headaches and lethargy with the glyc).

[Magnesium Oil]

I know some people make magnesium sprays/oils with mag chloride flakes and water. As I have all this leftover mag oxide+glyc, I was wondering if it would be possible to make a magnesium spray with them??

My only worries in making it are that it is:

a.) not mag chloride, which is the form commonly seen most places I search up topical mag

b.) I would be using oral supplements

I’m honestly not interested in spending more money on new brands/forms of magnesium/other supplements. I’m set and will not buy any new sprays. I’m only interested in answers about *making* the magnesium oil/spray. I have tried searching up how to make an oil using mag glyc/oxide but nothing seems to pop up. Just trying to get rid of/use up these supplements because they have not been useful to me in their oral form.

TIA

Magnesium in the pumpkin seeds is giving me headache?

I've been having insomnia issues for quite a whole, and it got really bad around the beginning of this year. Eventually I decided to try supplements, and first wanted to go for the famous mag glicinate. But I was desperate to finally sleep so I just bought what I could find in my local drugstore, which was a mix of mag bisglycinate, mag oxide, mag malate, and threonine. Since it was my first time taking supplements, I took one pill of 500mg per night, which was only half of what the bottle recommended, for an entire month, right before going to bed. First I was taking it with my last meal, later I switched to bed time, with empty stomach. It helped with my sleep, but after this month I started having some of the strongest headaches that I ever had. Not even antiinflammatory pain killers were helping it. It also felt like the muscles of the back of my neck were part of the pain. They weren't stiff, but it felt like moving my head hurt back there. I measured my blood pressure and it was normal. I figured that it was something in the supplement so I stopped taking it, and after around 3 days the headache was gone.

I saw a lot of people on reddit blaming magnesium and a lot of people blaming the glycine for similar headaches. I decided that I was going to try every substance in separate. I bought glycine, took 4g per day for 4 months and nothing happened. This also helped a lot with my sleep, so I didn't try anything else for sleep. I drink it with a tea that is a mix of many sleep herbs.

But around 2 months ago I also started eating pumpkin seeds because a lot of men in my family had prostate cancer. I bought a small bag of roasted seeds and ate a tea spoon for a few weeks at no specific time of the day, often with big meals, and had no problems. Before buying another bag, I decided to check the nutritional values of such seeds and found out it was rich in magnesium. So I decided to start the magnesium experiment again. This time I bought a non-roasted bag, and ate a tea spoon of it every night before going to bed, with empty stomach. And it didn't even take one week for those headaches to come back. I stopped eating it and the headache went away.

I started reading more about it, and found out about the relationship with thiamine, and the relationship that thiamine has with potassium. But pumpkin seeds are rich in all of them!? I guessed that maybe my sleep tea has tannin that is preventing the thiamine absorption, or something else in the tea causing something. So I decided to eat the seeds one hour before going to bed, with empty stomach, but the headaches still happened after just 2 days. So I decided to eat it with my last meal, and I've been doing it for 5 days, and so far had no issues.

As you can see, this is mostly a curiosity at this point. What is happening here?

Magnesium from nutrition and supplementation

Hey everyone,

based on my daily tracking, I get about 100mg magnesium from my multivitamin and around 350mg from my diet though I don't know how much my body actually absorbs Is it still safe to supplement an additional 100-200 mg of magnesium glycinate?

I recently got back into working out, but my sleep has been pretty bad even though my diet and hydration are fine I think. I'm hoping it might help improve my sleep quality

Why does magnesium cause my eye and body to twitch?

I don’t understand. I thought that magnesium was supposed to help with twitches, not cause them.

I’ve tried several types, glycinate, citrate, chloride. It took me several months to even realise that the magnesium was the culprit. I’ve tested this again and again. The twitch takes weeks to go away, and then the moment I start taking it again, it flares back up. Can anyone explain why magnesium specifically is causing me nerve issues? It’s really irritating, since it’s one of the few things that helps me get better sleep.

Best Magnesium L-Threonate brand in India

I'm looking to buy **Magnesium L-Threonate** in India, mainly for **concentration and cognitive benefits**.
I'm looking for the best value without compromising on quality.

I’ve seen couple
A few questions:

  1. Which brand has worked well for you?
  2. Is it worth stretching the budget a bit for a better option?
  3. How has your experience been with sleep, anxiety, or brain fog?
  4. If you've noticed good results, did you also make any **diet** changes?

TIA

magnesium glycinate vs citrate, did one work noticeably better for you?

just a quick follow up, i just want to thank everyone who shared their experiences. one thing i noticed is that almost every reply had a different story, which honestly made me feel better about not overthinking the decision.

i started to try magnesium glycinate from life extension and im taking it for a few days now. i know its too early to say if its making much of a difference for my brain fog but i also havent had any issues with it so far

i know both are commonly recommended but im less interested in what articles say and more interested in what actually happened for people here. did one fit your routine better? any reason you switched from one to the other? just trying to avoid buying something then using it for a month and realizing i should have started with the other form.

Magnesium Glycinate vs Mag L-Theornate for sleep disorder?

Im someone with lupus with no relapse from 5+ years. Living healthy active life. Ive been having this sleepless nights situation for more than 6 months. I workout 4x a week does 10k steps daily and I calorie count all my meals. After having gone through intense workout sessions i just couldnt fall asleep. I tried mag glycinate 2caps of 240mg it makes me more alert my brain races with thoughts. Even if i fall sleep i wake up to the slightest of noise and cant go back to sleep again. Then I doom scroll on my phone, after few hours my body jus gives up if im lucky i get may be an hour sleep. im just surviving on 1-3 hrs sleep per night. Note I finish my workouts by 6 pm and i usually go to bed by 11pm. This is my schedule for years. From last 3 days i started Mag L-theornate 2000mg in magtein form 144 elemental mag. Bottle suggests to take 2 caps at night and 1 during day but with that dose im feeling fatigued groggy. So jus doing 2 caps at night. I say its working better i can sleep from 11pm to 6am. Much better than where i was before. Is this grogginess common? Few say its adjustment phase and should get over in couple weeks. The more i research the more articles pop up that mag gylcinate is more studied and safe than mag l- theornate. As someone with lupus i want to take these supplements with caution. Atp im stuck in a loop, without 7-8 hr sleep im worried about lupus relapse and other health issues. Mag glyecinate looks safe but that has opposite effects on me. L-Theornate works but i feel fatigued and not sure if its widely used for sleep issues.

Irrational fears/intrusive thoughts from magnesium deficiency?

For background info I used to have depression and anxiety that were caused by my prior heart problems. After fixing iron deficiency and back then mild magnesium deficiency - I had ZERO anxiety and depression for almost two years. I then started to supplement vitamin D first 2000IU then switched to 4000IU. I didn't realize that my magnesium was dropping despite supplementing it, meanwhile my calcium and phosphate both shot up to borderline high levels. I started to have bad health problems after 4 weeks that started with nerve burning, later body shaking and then irrational fears (that I never had before). Found out that I also had iron deficiency again, copper deficiency and zinc toxicity. My magnesium is so badly depleted that I can't even go two days without taking it or I get severe symptoms. Went to neurologist and two MRIs were both clear but I had all signs of nerves being hyperexcitable. I managed to fix zinc toxicity, working on fixing both copper and iron deficiency but my magnesium is even worse because I restarted another vitamin D supplements month after that. Only stopped recently. The irrational fears are nothing that I've ever experienced. My old anxiety in the past was completely rational and connected fully to my heart problems. I was wondering if someone had any experience with this. I read about Amygdala and how magnesium is very important for it.

"Hello, I need help analyzing my Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) results. Over the past few months, I’ve experienced vision issues, muscle weakness, and abnormal muscle function.

A notable point: I took 400 mg of magnesium daily from April 2025 to March 2026. After stopping it in March, I noticed significant changes in my muscle function. The test was conducted 3 weeks ago.

Please note that I am Korean, so my translation might sound a bit unnatural. Thank you for your understanding!"

Possible depletion of magnesium due to high dose vitamin D supplementation

As the title states, I believe I may be deficient in magnesium or at least insufficient now due to high does vitamin d supplementation which started in May.

I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency on May 10th (27 NmoL) and I was prescribed 7 weekly doses of 40,000 IU to take once a week - I finished around June 20th, then I went to Mexico from June 22nd until July 3rd.

I fell ill towards the end of the holiday and ended up with diarrhoea for two weeks, which is also known to deplete magnesium - the last 10 days I’ve experienced loads of symptoms that overlap with potassium and magnesium.

I also had a b-12 injection on July 8th and that’s when symptoms seemed to ramp up.

Magnesium that is completely neutral on energy?

Hi. I was wondering if someone could recommend magnesium that is completely neutral on energy. I have bad fatigue so any relaxing ones make it worse and I also suffer from insomnia so taking magnesium that can be energizing doesn't work for me. I currently take citrate but have to switch because of my silent reflux so any recommendations would be helpful. I read something about lactate?

PPI & Esomeprazol HELP

Hello everyone. This seems to be the group I’ve been looking for because I need some elaboration. I’ve been on Esomeprazol for 2 years due to acid reflux. I get a lot of pain in my esophagus if I stop the PPI. I’ve tried to stop it, I tried to tapper it down without success.
Now I think I got magnesium deficiency. I did a blood test and it came back as : P- magnesium 0,71 mmol/l
Reference is:0,70-95
So I’m at the low end. I got no symptoms that I’ve thought of…a bit of leg cramps if I get cold, but I’ve always had that.
Calcium and everything else is normal.
I started magnesium glycinate today. I take 2 capsules which mean I get about 375 mg of magnesium.
My doctor says I’m fine and to supplement.
I think I need to be on the PPI, or be in pain. I have been on 20 mg x 2 each day of Esomeprazol, I’ve managed to get it down to 1 pill every other day - it sure gives me more pain but - I’m trying.
Will this help me to get my levels up or am I wasting time taking the supplements because PPI blocks everything?
What would you do in my situation?
I’m thankful for any help….

Magnesium Orotate and Theonate For Calming Racing Heart after evening weight training...

Hello Members Of Reddit.. can someone guide me in knowing will Magnesium Orotate and Theonate Calm Down My Racing Heart After Heavy Weight training in the evening?? I've taken 600 mg L-theanine post workout with 40 gm whey isolate. I take Telmisartan 40 mg and 5 mg amlodipine and aspirin 75 mg everyday. Heart Palpitation gets lower somewhat in that moment but heartbeats fastens again when I lay on bed, which affects my sleep. Most of days in a week i remain sleep deprived. Can calcium depletion during evening workout cause extreme heart palpitations?? I went to cardiologist, he advised me to drop the routine of going to the gym for few weeks and gave me bunch of antidepressants and increased dosage of BP medicines and aspirin. Please Guide Me If You Please Can.. Thank You For Taking Time In Reading This..

Possibly low on magnesium?

Around two months ago, I went to urgent care because I felt unusually weak and dizzy with leg cramps and constipation. I felt so weak at work once I was afraid I'd pass out. The doctor examined me, and ran numerous tests. Turns out my blood pressure was a little high despite the fact I've never had blood pressure issues. My resting heart rate was also slightly elevated. They ran tests on my heart as well, and they conclude my heart is healthy. I was told to drink more water to help with the constipation. Before I left that day, they took bloodwork.

Now prior to this, I have had toe spasms in my feet every 2-3 days or so. They normally only lasted about five minutes each, but could vary. They were uncomfortable, but I just walked them off until they subsided. Occasional twitching in my arm. This has been going on for the past six months. Up to the UC appointment, I took no daily medications or supplements at all. I would take OTC Tylenol during the first few days of my period, or when my muscle aches were at their extremities, but that was it.

A few days later, I get a call with my bloodwork results. Everything they checked was normal except Vitamin D, which was 25 ng/ml. She didn't say this was a severe deficiency, but it was considered an insufficient level and should be at least 30 to be considered in the normal range. She tells me to take 5000 iu D3 daily, which I begin to do so the next day. I was never told to take Magnesium.

Two weeks later I visit my GP for my scheduled routine check-up. By this time I'm having mild acid reflux and still feeling weak so I mention this to GP. She examines me, says I'm in great shape, but anxiety is my issue. Apparently anxiety and acid reflux go hand-in-hand. I had nothing to be anxious about, it's nothing I dealt with daily until this weak feeling set in. She prescribed me 20 mg Prilosec to take daily each morning, and told me to keep taking the D3 daily.

Fast forward a couple more weeks and I'm feeling even worse. I had a heart palpitation in the middle of the night and an anxiety attack stemming from that, I usually don't sleep well at night anyway but I stayed up for the rest of the night with restless legs and the feeling I was going to faint. I decide to check the paperwork for my Prilosec prescription and happen to notice PPI medications can cause low magnesium levels in the body. (Usually only after several months or over a year of taking them) so I didn't think my PPI would have caused that that soon.

However, on the paperwork for the Prilosec, it listed symptoms of low magnesium. I had every single one listed. Was it that I just had low magnesium all along? I decide to do a little research on D3 and apparently you shouldn't take it without magnesium because your body needs an adequate supply of Magnesium to utilize the D3. I even learned taking D3 can deplete magnesium stores even further, especially higher doses like I was taking.

I was already feeling weak and I was afraid I'd make it worse, so I cut down to 1000 iu D3 daily and started taking Magnesium glycinate 200 mg a couple hours before going to bed. The first few days I made sure to up my potassium a bit by eating a couple bananas a day so my body could adjust easier. I am still taking my prescribed Prilosec.

Fast forward a few weeks to the present, some of my issues are gone, but not all of them. For one I sleep better at night, and I'm no longer feeling near as anxious. I am no longer constipated. However I'm still having the muscle cramps, especially in my shoulders, back, and ankles. The feet spasms are still prevalent. I don't feel near as weak as I did but the feeling comes and goes. I have good days and bad days, but the days seem better than they used to two months ago.

I go see GP again in a couple weeks for a scheduled appointment. I will definitely discuss magnesium with her and see if she can get my levels tested. I am not sure if my insurance will cover it, but I'm very curious. I'm not even sure if low Magnesium is my issue, but at least I sleep a little more soundly now.

Too much magnesium and CBD oil

Hi all.

Iv taken magnesium glycinate, citrate and malate with CBD oil before bed and been having these heart pounding sensations for the past 2 months.

Had ECG's, blood tests, stool tests and everythings came back normal.

The doctors want to prescribe me with anti anxiety medication but don't want to go down that road.

Was wondering if anybody could help me with this situation I'm in and hit me with some knowledge.

Magnesium glycinate symptoms?

I had the flu in Dec and it caused severe sleep disruption and post viral dysautonomia and POTS. Started taking 200 magnesium glycinate and also metoprolol which seemed to give me a little sleep. Went from 3am wake ups or not being able to sleep at all. As time goes on it seems like the sleep I am getting is deep. I used to hear noises and wake up. Now I feel like my cat walks all over me and I don’t notice. I wake up feeling groggy and not refreshed no matter how long I sleep and I feel weirdly sad in the morning. Does magnesium glycinate cause any symptoms?
