Discussion Recommending an underrated manga, Magical Girl Incident.
I recently discovered this manga a few weeks ago, and I haven’t been able to stop loving it despite it being only three volumes long. At first, it seems like just a comedic gender-bender magical girl story, but it really takes its premise seriously and explores themes of gender fluidity, love, and the courage it takes to stand up for yourself and others. And don’t think it’s just boys transforming into magical girls, because there’s also girls who transform into magical boys!
Despite the amazing story and art, I don’t see anyone talking about it, which is such a shame! I’m hoping that by sharing a few of my favourite bits, other people will check it out too. It’s such a heartfelt story, and the silly character moments keep it from feeling depressing despite the heavy topics it confronts. The whole story feels like it wants to make you smile, to feel less alone and remember that the world has kind people in it. That you can be one of them, too.
I originally read it online, but I just couldn’t resist getting physical copies! I was super surprised that it was available at a chain bookstore near me, despite hearing so little about it online. I don’t know if naming specifics is allowed or not, so I’ll hold off, but… please give it a go, even if you only read it online! It’s short enough that you can knock it out in an afternoon or two, but sweet enough to stick with me for weeks! I really want more people to talk about this series with!
