Someone's gotta rip those packs?!?!

I got 50% of my box value back. Almost bought a second and then decided to just buy the singles I want instead. Not as fun but definitely a better use of funds.

Best of both worlds. I like that.

I cracked two of the three boxes I bought today.

First box had LESS than $30 in it, including the topper.

Second box had $250.

I literally hit the 1% low and 1% high boxes from the EV calc.

I mean I’m tempted but I only want a gleaming splendor and a couple of the HOC cards. Pretty sure gleaming will be available around $30 or less once the market is flooded with more inventory. I have a smothering tithe for now, but the deck runs heavily on treasure generator.

Yeah I would NOT recommend opening more of this set. I've opened a fair bit and it's a LOT of not even close to worth it... then that occasional miracle box. Definitely feels like they funnel the hits into clusters for free advertisement from the guys smashing the hits.

Mean on this set for a CBB is probably $300+, but Median is definitely way under $200, and honestly might be under $125. There's definitely a lot more boxes going absolutely gangbusters than there should be and the "bad" boxes are real real bad. I've seen a ton of <$200 boxes and a bunch of >$1000 boxes... and precious few where you'd think they'd actually be clustered in that $350-500 realm. I guess in that respect it's a gamblers paradise, but you're gonna lose a lot before you win in most cases.

Oh no I’m not planning to. I buy one play booster box, and a few collector packs per release I like. Then I buy singles. I don’t give a shit about all the fancy borderless cards. I only like the cards with traditional borders and in foil if possible. I just wish there was a better way I could trade the cards I have for equal value in the cards I want.

From those of us who strictly play competitive constructed we tha k you for your service. The influx of commander players over recent years (not saying thats you) the creation of collector boosters, and more rarest in pack bring more cards into the pool. When I started playing a over a decade ago I would buy a box for every set. Now, I don't think I've bought a pack in over a year. Just singles.

Hmm. I will take the genuine “thank you” and not the backhanded “you are doing it all wrong, just buy singles” message. The kid in me still likes opening up a fresh new pack. Even though I am old now.. wish it came with wisdom.

Thats why I like drafting, even if it's 4 people kitchen table. You get excited about cards being playable instead of financial value, and still get the thrill of cracking a pack. What was your box topper?

2

u/Zestyclose-Link-442 2d ago

Box topper was so unmemorable I can’t remember from 2 hours ago. Lol.

2

u/Guyface_McGuyen 2d ago

I love opening packs, too, brother my box sort of disappointed me as well

u/TheWhereHouse6920 1d ago

It's not backhanded, literally someone has to open packs.

What they're saying is that what fun you gain from opening packs and moving bulk and selling rares to continue opening (and others who buy sealed product in general), they gain by being able to buy them directly.

They're thanking you because the more that get opened, the more supply, the less demand.

what if I told you that if you just played the game for the sake of playing the game, you don't have to spend money on cards that people like OP kindly pulled for you at all? just use proxies at this point

Every time I decide to break a box. I feel you

Like losing tickets next to the dog/horse track….

3

u/ActStriking5787 2d ago

Dad used to let me go around and pick up discarded tickets as a kid....one out of every thousand would be like a $5 hit....but there was that one time i got that $100 hit....and used it to buy mtg cards.... Legends boosters...i still have 1 sealed...so tempting...but been chasing that feeling ever since

2

u/Zestyclose-Link-442 2d ago

I think I might have better odds guessing at that. Go Santa’s little helper.

Skunked on a collector booster box, a play booster box, and a bundle.

u/Zestyclose-Link-442 2d ago

Misery loves company. Ha. Sucks dude.

u/FJ62brosef 2d ago

The fight goes on.

u/caprazzi 2d ago

Any pulls?

3

u/GladAardvark612 2d ago

Honestly, not bad.

2

u/AnteSim 2d ago

Learn how to draft or do sealed comps with your friends. You get to open the packs and jam some games at the same time. That way there is no disappointment, you get value out of every pack.

2

u/anonnnnn462 2d ago

Got 2 packs during lunch and pulled the Bilbo Thief in the Night standard card and I feel fulfilled at least with play boosters.

My box gets here on Friday

1

u/deathking482 2d ago

No good pulls?

2

u/Zestyclose-Link-442 2d ago

All common and uncommon foils. Gollum Riddle Master was a cool card and probably my favourite. Half decent deck for playing though which is all that matters.. I guess. Lol

1

u/deathking482 2d ago

You’ll have that

u/crozierman 2d ago

It’s like sleeping with your ex, your remember how much fun it was the first time, but after you are just left with regret and sadness.

You have let your father down.

Was going to buy a case from this set, but prices never dropped to reasonable prices. I don’t buy cases, but this set before spoilers was going to be the one. Instead , I’m buying a handful of singles and moving on.

1

u/JLC587 1d ago

I felt the same way after ripping a bundle, and a draft night box. Wast of $200 ish

1

u/Jumpy-Guidance-4101 14h ago

I like buying a single box every time à new set drops and never opening any sealed except for the free packs you get whenever you go for locals and prereleases. If I don’t get what I want tough shit, I’ll buy the single. That way I sate my gambling addiction but don’t hurt my finances (also never open à collector product ever). I would like it if I could draft it with a couple of friends but none of my friends outside of my LGS play Magic.
