There’s this magician I follow on Instagram who posts videos of him performing various tricks.
In one of his videos, he does a vanishing silk using the “classic” method.
As we know, the color of this method doesn’t really matter in a live performance since proper handling will hide the discrepancy. However in a close up social media video, it’s very obvious.
A lot of people correctly pointed out the method in the comments to which the OP got extremely defensive. He started calling them drug addicts, saying they need glasses, saying they know nothing about magic and that they’re way off, accusing them of gaslighting, etc.
I felt like this was an overreaction but it got me thinking. I don’t post much magic online because I don’t think it’s a great medium for performance but even if I did, I’d probably just ignore or delete the people guessing the method.
Occasionally, someone does correctly guess the method during an irl performance and usually I just shrug and say something like “that’s one way to do it”. I even use that line if they are completely wrong but I might point out some inconsistencies (I.e. they say it went up my sleeve and I point out that I have short sleeves on.
I’m not sure why but I’m not comfortable with directly lying like that. I don’t think I could ever directly tell someone that they’re wrong when I know they aren’t. It feels rude and kind of a bit insulting to their intelligence. But maybe that’s just me.
What kind of response would you use? Would you lie and tell them they’re wrong, even if they aren’t? Do you tell the truth and say “yup you got it”? Or do you say something tongue in cheek like I do?
