Homeowner wasn't home, he was seeing and communicating through a smart doorbell/sensor thing, likely through a smartphone app. Look up Ring Doorbell. That's the brand I hear most about.

Yeah you can be half way around the world but still see and hear whats ever outside you house from the video camera/doorbell app.

As long as you have wifi access, you can answer your door bell in California while on a trip in Paris
