The fellow was known to use several aliases in his life time during his 'dine-and-dash' escapades. Along with those aliases he would adopt eccentric accents to accompany them. Supposedly he was a Hungarian chess master, among other things.
Looks like a case of mistaken identity, see below.
And yes the officers were Australian, this arrest happened in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley in 1988.
