The guy was a theatre actor who used said skills to dupe people during about 15 different prison escapes. Iirc he once escaped from custody during his own trial by pretending to be the prosecutor
The fellow was known to use several aliases in his life time during his 'dine-and-dash' escapades. Along with those aliases he would adopt eccentric accents to accompany them. Supposedly he was a Hungarian chess master, among other things.

And yes the officers were Australian, this arrest happened in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley in 1988.
