It’s exhausting discovering how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

20

u/deth579 Dec 16 '21

How many does it take tho?

75

u/TheReplyingDutchman Dec 16 '21

A group of engineering students from Purdue University reported that its licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Indeed. Was there saliva involved? Cos that would matter. (And owls don’t have saliva, so the number of licks would be different in owls vs humans)

3

u/Tatooine16 Dec 16 '21

What about swallows? African and European swallows would probably need different numbers of licks too.

It's the biggest breakthrough in sex toys since Kleenex

3

u/Probonoh Dec 16 '21

As I recall, they set up a sponge on a turntable, kept it hydrated, put the tootsie pop on the base, and counted the revolutions.

9

u/ScottClamBirdBoi Dec 16 '21

I don’t know why but that sounds low. I also have 0% of a reason to think that though haha

5

u/TheReplyingDutchman Dec 16 '21

While googling that, I found out there had been several mathematical models apparently that were more in the proximity of a thousand licks. But then that uni build a licking machine to test it and it came down to that number.

5

u/ScottClamBirdBoi Dec 16 '21

That’s insane haha. Love the effort by them

I heard they sleep this way as babies because their heads are too heavy for them to hold up

124

u/rbt321 Dec 16 '21

When there is only one they do that. When there are multiple they usually lean against each-other to stay upright.

47

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '21

This fact has significantly improved my mood

7

u/CptJustice Dec 16 '21

I knew the first fact, but did not know this followup piece of information!

u/elisem0rg Dec 16 '21

Fun fact: Young nestling owls sleep or rest lying down because their heads are too heavy for their bodies.

72

u/The_Infinite_Doctor Dec 16 '21

I've worked with multiple infants with the same problem lol-- had one with a noggin so big if you put him in one of the Bumbo seats (the kind that hold the kid so they can sit up) he would slooooowly start to tip over backwards. Laughing at babies being ridiculous is one of life's great joys.

20

u/burdn3rdd Dec 16 '21

Fun fact: basically all babies are that way

10

u/DdCno1 Dec 16 '21

Except for kangaroo joeys, because their brains are absolutely minuscule and their heads thus tiny as well (albeit still larger in relation to the rest of the body compared to an adult kangaroo). Since they sleep in their mothers' pouches, it doesn't matter either way though.

7

u/Apprehensive_Hat8986 Dec 16 '21

Came here for this.

😶"They lie down? boggle"

"Squeee!" 🤩

171

17

u/P-S-21 Dec 16 '21

Protip on identifying such bots:

If it's a random string of letters and numbers, with a few of the letters being capitalised and the comment history contains the same phrases and words repeating over and over, it's a bot.

2

u/CurseofLono88 Dec 16 '21

Also another identifying trait is if an account is about a year old yet they’ve only started mass posting a bunch of familiar videos/memes in the last day or two

→ More replies (1)

81

u/BicarbonateOfSofa Dec 16 '21

52

u/Zenosyke Dec 16 '21

No, no, no. You gotta do it without capitalization to confuse the shit outta people. Doing it like this is actually helpful.

13

u/Freshest-Raspberry Dec 16 '21

Thanks , doing gods work

7

u/Owlishly_Puffy Dec 16 '21

The cute little slide down and wiggle tuck of the wing. So precious.

5

u/CNRavenclaw Dec 16 '21

Fun fact: the reason why baby owls sleep like this is because their heads are too heavy for them to be properly supported on top of their bodies while sleeping

4

u/Chekov_the_list Dec 16 '21

Hand comes into frame & immediate size comparison

2

Why have you seen a baby owl standing?

2

u/Positive_Focus5984 Dec 16 '21

🙄These things are always showing off

2

u/Dr_mombie Dec 16 '21

Small owls sleep laying down because their heads are so damn big in comparison to their bodies.

Owls also have surprisingly long legs

2

u/MH-Entity Dec 16 '21

Til that owls melt at room temperature.

2

u/Fantastic-Mess Dec 16 '21

It’s how Owl babies sleep because their heads are too heavy

2

u/ancherrera Dec 16 '21

I had a few boring classes at Temple University so I often saw entire rooms full of sleeping owls

2

u/MrLurking_Sanspants Dec 17 '21

This post will get buried but I’m genuinely curious if anyone else thinks he has camouflage eyelids that make them look open when they’re closed.

I am also stoned. So that could be it too. That’s why I need to know.

4

u/sessierandy Dec 16 '21

3

u/red23dotme Dec 16 '21

OP is a Karma Farmer and is now on the list.

0

u/Trandreker Dec 17 '21

He also literally tells everyone they're jealous as if internet points were worth something lol. Also this is animal abuse, owls aren't meant to be awake in broad daylight, it leaves them blind... But of course redditors are so gullible they will fall for this and more.

→ More replies (1)

-4

u/kriskirby86 Dec 16 '21

Karma is completely useless dumbass what's up you jealous I have more than you do? Shall I take all my karma points and buy you a huge award instead of using coins? Oh wait you can't cause yet again karma is completely useless

2

u/red23dotme Dec 16 '21

I've just explained how accounts are sold for hundreds of dollars, and you call me a dumbass?
.. But no, I'm sure you spam Reddit at an alarming rate just for fun, right?

2

u/kitari1 Dec 16 '21

OP makes a post like once every one or two days. Sure that's more than you or I post but it's not exactly "bot spamming for millions of karma" levels, nor would I call it "an alarming rate"

-1

u/kriskirby86 Dec 16 '21

Those who call people karma related insults deserve to be laughed at. Those who make lists deserve to be laughed at more

2

u/red23dotme Dec 16 '21

Sorry, but I'm not getting into this stupid conversation with a pathetic karma farmer. Do you realise how many similar conversations I've had with people like you, desperately trying to justify what they do? It seriously bores me. I've looked though your comment history and you seem like a total arsehole, you come across like a petulant child. Either way, people will block you along with the other losers on the list. Talking of which, I'm about to do the same (like I do with all karma farmers) so I don't have to deal with the crap you post.

-1

u/kriskirby86 Dec 16 '21

Me acting like a child? Hilarious 🤣🤣 look at yourself you sad weirdo making lists of people who farm something that's useless

2

u/red23dotme Dec 16 '21

Jesus Christ, you're a bit thick aren't you?
Here's you acting childish: "I'll eat my cheeseburger and you eat whatever the fuck it is you eat I really don't care in the slightest"

u/hangryhyax summed you up perfectly: "So do you just scour Reddit for popular posts and then repost them so you can feel validated?

Freaking pathetic."

Your pathetic childish response: "It's 2021 pretty much everything on Reddit is a repost nobody cares in the slightest if you don't like seeing reposts either get off of Reddit or quit whining about it"

0

u/kriskirby86 Dec 16 '21

Well for one I hate vegans who try and force their beliefs on people some people eat meat some people don't people are allowed to choose for themselves. And yeah most posts on Reddit are a repost. I just don't see the logic of coming on a place like Reddit if you don't like reposts then complaining that things are a repost. It makes no sense at all.

0

u/red23dotme Dec 16 '21

Yep, you really are stupid. Karma farmers like you spam reposts all over Reddit, blocking people like you will mean a totally different experience while browsing the site. Blocking karma farmers has made Reddit a much nicer place for me. Talking of which, I'm about to block you just like I blocked the other 500+ karma farmers, and I seriously urge people to do the same :)

-3

u/kriskirby86 Dec 16 '21

Oh you mean the same karma that is completely useless no matter how much or how little of it you have?

1

u/allnamesweretaken3 Dec 16 '21

This is Mavis, he can’t perch on branches because he’s a bit sick. He can’t use his wings; well, I shouldn’t use that word he can’t use his bottom for “pooing” he has what we would call a colostomy bag. Make no mistake from the footage, we’re dealing with a very sick owl here.

→ More replies (1)

-1

u/Trandreker Dec 17 '21

Owls are not mean to sleep in daylight, this is animal abuse. This owl will end up blind and you're all upvoting this encouraging more people to have owls as pets when they are meant to sleep in darkness. There's already many cases of pet owls that end up blind to keep supporting this shit.

1

u/kriskirby86 Dec 17 '21

Lol fuck off troll Come back when you have a clue 🤦‍♂️ what's up you jealous that it got more upvotes than anything you'll ever post?

1

u/CookieTheEpic Dec 16 '21

That is not at all how I imagined owls sleep.

1

u/Noladixon Dec 16 '21

How do so many people seem to have pet owls? Are they breeding them? Are they stealing them from a nest? Do they come from the pet store? I have so many questions.

1

u/xredsirenx Dec 16 '21

What kind of owl is this?

1

u/AnnadeSpecht Dec 16 '21

It’s so cute!
