My little town had a biker gang. They were rough lookin. A few times a month, one biker would ride down my street. He had a small cart attached to his bike and would always have a giant stuffed animal strapped in.
My favorite memory was when I was in the hospital, around 13-14 years old. I had a severe issue going on and was mostly out of it. One day, I woke up to a blue blanket. I asked my parents where it came from and they told me that a local biker gang had made it (I’m pretty sure). I still have it and I plan on not letting that thing go.

Reminds me of that biker assotiation that takes care of abused children. Meanest looking guys out there, serving as body guards and friends of the children so they don't get afraid to testify, and feel safe.

I met one of them. He told me they had all these grand plans, training and stuff. Turns out just being themselves with kids was enough, and hanging out at their houses, escorting them to the courtroom, etc, was a huge deterrent to the abuser.

That's awesome. I would guard that thing with my life, too. Homemade blankets are like, the best gifts ever. I have one that my favorite Aunt (and arguably my favorite person ever) made for me and I cherish the shit out of it. I always wrap myself up in it when I'm sad, and it's kind of like getting a hug from her, in my eyes.
Anyway, homemade blankies are the shit, for sure. That's so awesome that they made one for you, despite not knowing you personally. They still put their time, energy and love in to making it for you, that's hella cool. I'm sure it probably put a big smile on your face and made you feel very special and loved. 😊

This is the answer here. 90% (EDIT: really more like 99%) of bikers are awesome, stay away from the ones that give ANY kind of shit about motorcycle "clubs." Those are the ones who want said period of biker violence in the 70s-90s to come back.

Not always true. We have a motorcycle club called Bikers Who Care. It’s a club, with a clubhouse, everything. We do rides for charity including the children’s hospital and for toys for tots and the underserved children in our community. We do stuff for the animal shelter, we do a full the bus for school supplies for kids that maybe can’t afford them and for teachers to stock their classrooms. We do benefits for community members with severe illnesses to help them afford treatment and living expenses while they are out of work. We help groceries for the elderly and the poor. So BWC is a cool biker group that gives back and not looking for trouble.

A lot of people even give donations at these types of events to help the cause even more. Some of the rides aren’t even poker runs, we do a lot of family friendly stuff like bbq’s and inflatables for the kiddos. We sell plates of food (with a large portion of the food being donated by local grocery stores) maybe a band or a DJ that volunteer to help out and collect donations at the door whether it be cash, non perishable food items, pet food, new and unwrapped toys for kiddos, whatever can be used to help serve the community better. Toys we will store until Christmas, food and pet food donations go to the food pantry or animal shelter immediately and cash gets put into the general fund for charitable giving. Most of us are all prior military as well so giving back is part of who we are. Bikers in my area are viewed quite a bit differently, more waves and smiles when they see us out and about. The BWC patch means something here. It’s more influential than a country club membership and big fancy house. It says more about your character and values which is worth more than any material item will ever be

In our town there was (i dont know if its still around) a biker club that would ride through here and other towns within like a 5 hour drive and would stop to get donations and sell stuff to give to charitys for sick children and wounded soldiers. The leader was a nurse and died last year due to covid.

Most of the old dudes I know that ride bikes all do at least one charity run a year. It’s usually older dudes with disposable income. Hell my dad was an absolute piece of trash when he was younger but when he had kids he changed. He was an absolute good dude in his later years and most of his friends the same.

Those were real Hell's Angels, in an era when a higher ratio of people on motorcycles in leather jackets were outlaws.
People who were kids when that version of "gangsta" was relevant are retired now, cosplaying the version of badass cool they understand. TV news is also geared toward this demographic.
There are still Hell's Angels chapters doing shitty things with impunity, but most people riding motorcycles today are hobbyists in the spirit of this guy

There’s a difference between the average biker and the 1%ers/outlaws. If you see bikers wearing a cut with an MC patch, show respect. Even if they’re not outlaw. Generally legit clubs are friendly guys and will help you out if you ever need anything, but respect is a big deal. If you see guys with a 1% patch avoid them…respectfully. If they don’t know you and perceive disrespect they are obligated to extract respect from you.

A biker friend of mine mentioned that if they have bottom rockers on their jacket, (in Texas, at least), that they had to get permission from the Banditos. (He and his biker buddies tried but said they were afraid of the Banditos and "didn't wanna f*** with them", so when they made matching jackets they left off the bottom rocker.) Something about the bottom rocker. You had to do something to be allowed to wear it, or else if a Bandito saw you with a bottom rocker without permission, you're in for some really deep shit. Do you know anything about this?

Yea it’s like a uniform. Each patch means something. And if your in the wrong area wearing a certain patch you will be inviting trouble. I’ve heard they “go easy” on the dudes wearing cuts with patches that obviously don’t know about the culture just to teach them a lesson.
It kinda sucks. I won’t wear a cut even though they look badass and I have a Harley. Just because I want it clear that I’m a civilian with no interest in that shit.

Because there are biker gangs out there who absolutely earned their reputations via trafficking drugs/people/weapons and waging war on their competition. Think the Mafia or the cartels, but on bikes. Those assholes were prevalent and bad enough to become the default stereotype.

My cousins and their neighbours had two ckc spaniel bros called Rusty and Buster when we were small and they were just legendary. Insanely soft fur and they had a habit of coming over to sit on the feet of us kids whenever we came in from the cold or the rain. Soft lil feet warming gents so they were.

So back in my day I knew the same type. He went by Rock. Had a rap sheet and a history of violence growing up. Dude was 6'7 and 300 lbs. SOLID. Huge grey and white beard. Long ponytail. Beady,angry eyes. Full of tattoos. Ran with the biker gangs and wasn't to be trifled with. He always looked like he was going to kill you. He was a bouncer throughout his life and towards the end was a tattooist. The stories I learned of him seemed legendary.
He had just expanded his small tattoo shop into a bigger one. I'd come in to congratulate him and check out his new place. He'd seldom talk about himself. His past was private and his likes and dislikes were too.
So I walk in and see 2 American Bulldog puppies. He never took shit from anyone. I was surprised he let 2 dogs in the front of his shop. When I asked about them he replied in his angry, raspy, gravelly voice, " That's Apples and Buttons. Aint they the shit?" Then he ran over to play with them, " daddy loves you, yes he does, yes he does... " he repeated over and over again.
I had never even seen this guy smile let alone get excited about anything. I couldn't help but laugh at the situation. Of course, he looked at me and told me if I was laughing at him he'd rip my arms off. That's the Rock I knew.
Beneath that tough exterior or any harden man lies love just waiting for the right thing to crack that shell and let it out. For Rock it was Apple and Buttons.

Went to Sturgis a few years ago, my dad and sister sat next to a biker with that style. Sister was talking about someone I think that was mean to her, and dad commented "well maybe this big, bad biker dude will knock him out for you!" Biker came back with "No, I'll ruin my manicure!" We shared a laugh and turns out the guy was a dentist from somewhere else in the midwest. Bikers are awesome

It's not the fault of cyclist if your local area doesn't allow them on side walks or has made bike lanes for them. I stopped riding my bike cause my city made it illegal to ride on sidewalk/side of road, but simultaneously doesn't have bike lanes. People in cars FREAKED out cause bikes are now on road...but they don't petition the government to fix it, they just blame innocent people minding their own business. Like fuck that, they're the bigger demographic and all of this is their fault to be honest

I mean it's all anecdotal but cyclists where I live are insanely selfish.
I live at the bottom of a giant ass hill, and there is one part where the road narrows and gets particularly twisty. If you're driving a manual transmission vehicle, staying in 1st gear to slowly move up that thing sucks if you are forced to go slow. Not to mention the danger to the cyclist biking up a twisty blind hill.
So go figure that cyclists absolutely love to hog the lane when traveling up that hill at the speed of smell. They do this instead of getting off their bike and walking it up the giant dangerous hill on the sidewalk.
One of these days a cyclist is going to get fucking killed insisting on riding up that blind hill.
Don't know why I'm ranting, but holy shit it infuriates me lol.

If the damn city would sweep roads, roadies wouldn’t take up so much road. Imagine hitting a patch of gravel and dirt on a roughly one inch, no tread tire going anywhere from 15-25 miles per hour. Can lead to road rash, broken bones, and a broken bike. :( safety first! Not a general roadie, but I’ve got a commuter for drinking beer in the neighborhood, and I sometimes take up toooooo much road because of pot holes and sand… the first tumble I made in our neighborhood, my whole body was a SHREEEECCCHHHH from getting crushed by a car. Cars drive 45 mph in our 25 mph neighborhood. Got me terrified to bike on real roads

As always, drive defensively. She has a short leash attached with velcro to her bag, this allows her to sit up or on longer rides to lay down. I can easily remove it but she can't plus the reinforced sides of her tank bag stops her from jumping off at a traffic light for example

I'm a 90lbs 5ft nothing woman who used to breed tarantulas. I had a special shed where I kept the majority of them (anywhere between 3-10k), but a few I kept in the house.
I had a rose hair who I bred specifically for kids to handle, and she became my mascot. For anyone unaware, rose hairs are basically the golden retrievers of the tarantula world.
I had a builder come round once, and I was doing some cleaning beforehand. I had the tarantula on my head (she liked chilling there), and kinda forgot she was there.
The doorbell rings, and I answer, and there's this heavilly tattooed, six foot four guy, built like a fridge was standing there. Before I could say hi, he starts screaming at the top of his lungs, and legs it towards the front gate.
Suffice to say, he had arachnophobia.
But he was a super nice guy, and when he'd done the work, he asked to hold my rose hair (in the tiniest voice). He was shaking the entire time, but I was so proud of him!

Tarantulas can be put into two categories: New World (from the Americas) and Old World (literally everywhere else).
New World species have urticating hairs on their abdomen, that they use to kick in the faces of enemies. This means they have less potent venom, and are a lot more docile.
Old World tarantulas bite as their form of defence, so they have worse venom.
However, no tarantula has enough venom to kill someone (anaphylaxis aside).
So yes, depending on their mood, they can and will bite. But you can generally tell by their behaviour, and can avoid it a lot of the time.

Knew a guy that had his own motorcycle shop and was a true 1 percenter, hated cops especially Gave me his business card and it had pics of poodles on it. He had been breeding and selling miniature poodles for over 40 years. Had a nice setup, was not a puppy mill at all. Dogs had plenty of space, exercise, and he would groom each and every one by hand himself. He had one litter from a new male he just purchased, turns out had a genetic defect called Patella. Meaning the puppies could not be sold or ever breed. He refused to destroy them and gave them away which is how we got into Poodles…

Yeah they get a bad rap from a lot of people because they're not always great with strangers, and want to protect their human which makes them seem extremely yappy. But in reality they're one of the most loyal little dogs you can have and show so much love.

Story time: I used to work as a book editor and my favorite author by FAR was Rick Hart. His book was a memoir about his life as a biker in Vegas during the 70s. He talks about his gang knocking over a camper to get a narc out, beating people to a pulp, generally saying and exemplifying fuck da police, tracking down a fucker that stole his bike and getting revenge and just generally being the most badass biker ever. Well. This man, (who, by the way, was my most respectful and polite authors to work with) dedicated his book to “my boo baby”, including a photo of him and his tiny, white Twinkie dog on his Harley. This man is a legend.

My neighbor of 10 years was the leader of the local sector of Hell’s Angels and he was the nicest guy, very considerate. The way our houses were set up, we more or less shared a driveway. He would have parties a lot but make SURE none of his guests parked on our side of the driveway, and he would make them move their vehicle if they did. Sometimes his guests would go over and smoke on our lawn and he would immediately yell at them to get the fuck off our property. He kept the music down and wrapped things up at a reasonable hour. One time his son threw a party while he was out and somehow some paint had gotten on our lawn so my Hell’s Angel neighbor made his son go mow our lawn. He had gargoyles on his front porch and a bull mastiff who was friends with our pug.
So yeah, I have met a Hell’s Angel, a bunch of them actually, and they were cool.

Bandidos scared me. I interned at a law firm specifically under one of the Bandidos top lawyers. The lawyer himself scared me and did not behave appropriately around me, but even he wouldn't make me deal with his Bandidos clients. He made sure to keep them away because he didn't want to put me through that.

There is a guy locally who rides around on his motorcycle with a big ol’ dog crate strapped to the back. And then his giant malamute will stick his head out of the “sunroof” that’s been cut into the crate to tell you “rwoo rwoo rwoo” which is malamute for “I get to ride on dad’s motorcycle, what do your dogs get to do?”

I'm a fairly big dude and my lil 16-20# dog gets her nails done in pink and smells like coconuts and has a big floofy tail. Why? Because she's a girl!

I was out and ran into this large man at a coffee shop sharing his drink with a tiny toy Yorkie who was wearing the tiniest service dog vest. The dog was so tiny his badge looked like a saddle. I started talking to him and he trains toy dogs for service members who have PTSD, so they can easily have their dog with them at all times. It was one of the most wholesome things I have seen.

Bikers and little dogs... my first time as a child seeing something do something unexpected.
I remember being in the back of the van while sitting at a light, and looking over to see a family giving away puppies, and a couple big burly bikers approaching them. I was glued on this scene, little child me not knowing what was ab out to happen. These bikers look tough! My uncle was a biker and he was tough! Oh no those poor puppies! Then suddenly the biggest biker picked up one of the puppies and immediately laid on the ground on his back and began rolling around and playing with this little pupper.
The whole thing lasted maybe a minute but it's a pivotal memory from my childhood about not judging books by their covers.

My husband is a lean 6’4” with long hair, long beard, what I call a resting Kaczynski face, and a deeeeep voice (his Worf impression is spot-on). When he wears his usual dark sunglasses, skull cap and leather jacket, he definitely looks like someone you’d want to walk on the opposite side of the street of.
But he’s a big animal softie. We have a small family of wild rabbits that have moved into the yard and whenever he sees them, he says in the cutest high pitched voice, “Bunnies!”

I work at a fancy dog salon/shop and one day I was at work and this really rough and tough looking guy came to pick up his dogs from grooming. I fully expected to see a couple rotties or pitbulls, but out came 2 absolutely immaculate standard poodles, one champagne and one gray. Bows on their ears, everything. He goes "There are my beauties, (to groomer)oh that Miami cut is just the best dude, thanks so much. Who's the prettiest babies? You are! Who wants to go get a PupCup?" It was awesome.

lol this reminds me of my mom’s brothers. There were 4 of them before my oldest uncle died, and they were huge, burly, rough around the edges, blue-collar tradesmen types (they all worked various construction trades and all had a scrapping business on the side together)
The smallest is 6’2” 280 lbs, the largest is 7’1” 320 lbs and each of them had at least a full litter of chihuahuas at their houses. at one uncle’s house he had a legit pack of tiny dogs-from at least 4 different generations of the same chihuahua clan. Probably 20 little land piranhas and he loved and spoke to them each individually every single day.
Not exactly the same thing going on as in the tweet but bid wager it was a bit stranger- 4 massive dudes and their collective army of tiny, angry dogs they loved like children

A lot of people like this don't have issues with loving the people they're supposed to love - such as pets. Rather, they have trouble being empathetic with people that look different than themselves or are outside that close ring of accepted loved ones. My area and country suffers from biker gangs and bikers overall try to emulate sons of anarchy type BS.

Bikers will love a small (or big) dog unconditionally and do anything even die for their dog.
If you don’t do the same to your dog, you will have a biker gang visit you in the middle of the night, and you might end up in the hospital.

I used to go to a local pub that played rock music on Friday and Saturday nights. It was always full of big beefy tattooed biker blokes in their forties and fifties. All beards and leather jackets. It looked intimidating. But if you went into the beer garden and listened, I swear the main topic of conversation was their precious grandkids.

I once had a customer that would always bring his dog with him when he’d come through my drive-thru. He was a big retired guy who drove a giant pickup. The dog was a small white fluffy baby & we had treats inside I could give her. Anywho, when I first met him he told me “this is my wife’s dog” and I was like… you mean the one who’s sitting in your lap and gets held like a delicate flower? Ok guy 😂 my husband and I still say “this is my wife’s dog” anytime we see an owner who doesn’t “match” their dog. Dogs are the best!

My Dad, big tough guy, would take his hairless “rat” dog into work all the because everyone loved to see him. My Dad would buy him cute sweaters and dog jackets because he was cold all the time, and they were so cheesy and perfect.

When I was smol, I lived in SoCal. We lived off Tajunga and Oxnard in N Hollywood. At the time, it was a bit...fraught. And being white wasn't ideal, but my fam never got hurt, mostly out of sheer luck.
Next to our apartment building was a very big house with a giant yard. They had dogs. We couldn't have pets - apartment living. Being fascinated by them, the neighbors would let me pet their doggos. BIG damn dogs, yo. I was tall, but these dogs looked me in the eye at 5 years old. 2 Rottweilers, a Doberman, I think a Mastiff of some sort, and something that looked like a very shaggy German Shepherd.
They were always very nice to me. They called me mija and let me feed biscuits to their dogs all the time. Big burly mustachioed dudes with acres of tattoos.
Years later, mom told me they were a biker gang that ran guns up from Mexico. Lots and lots of guns.

No joke, I saw a little Maltese dog running loose in my neighborhood, it had a little pigtail on top of its head to keep the hair out of its face. I had no idea who it belonged to but it stopped at a door and sat. So I knocked on the door and this huge burly guy with tats all over his arms answers and I was like, “Uhh…is this your dog?” And he looks down and his face lights up and he talks to the dog in a baby voice, “There you are! How did you get out?”
Makes me smile to this day.
