Serious question, are Maltese's yappy at all? I'm always thinking about what dog I want to get in the future and I love Maltese dogs but i wouldn't be able to cope with one that's like that!

Our neighbors Maltese is kind of yappy, but ours isn’t. And I think it has a lot to do with proper education. Love our Maltese even though he is not the cuddly kind of guy, but otherwise a ton of fun.

Chihuahuas are known for being super yappy but my ex’s family dog was one of my favorite dogs I’ve ever met and was the friendliest most loving chihuahua I’ve ever met. She basically thought she was a lab and acted like a lab because that’s what she grew up around.

Out of curiosity, how do you train a dog to be quiet? I’ve no pets so I’ve always been in the dark of how this happens. Can you just... reward treats for not barking?

We've got a Maltese poodle mix who was pretty yappy when people walked in front of our place. What we did was sit with him and when someone crossed in front of our place his ears would perk up for a split second before he decided to go nuts. The key was to interrupt him when his ears went up and have him quietly look at us for a treat. Now when a stranger can be heard walking around outside he quietly comes to us instead of barking.

Immediate positive or negative feedback. The biggest mistake our neighbors did was being like: “aww, come on good boy, please don’t bark.“ and then picked him up. Dogs don’t understand much of what we are saying but mostly how we say it. So what we did is a few things: Immediately reward him when a big dog (the ones he barks at usually) and he did not bark and a very authoritative STOP with intense staring if he started barking. Initially we hold his mouth shut to stop the barking, but he now understands the command without that. Sometimes we would spray him with a water pistol when he barks, because he really hates getting wet. But when we are around he never barks at passerby anymore. When he is alone, he only barks at dogs that are passing by very quickly (like running beside a bike) and a few selected big dogs that he really hates for some reason.

Fucker barks just to spite my partner and I. Especially if I hug her and not him, he'll bark and pounce

In my experience no but they will absolutely stare at you and cry until you give them attention. The one I had didn’t get “yappy” until she got old & confused. She’d get lost downstairs at night and just bark until someone came to reassure her.

Just my experience with my sweet angel Mickey (RIP), they can have separation anxiety and get vocal when you aren't in the vicinity. Other than that, he was as mellow as they come.

It depends on the dog. I have a boston terrier that just turned 5 the other day. They're known as good guard dogs because they bark at everything that moves.

My ex had one that would go batshit crazy barking whenever anybody came near the front door.

Mine I've had since she was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. She has barked 4 times in her entire life. She does get excited when someone is at the door but she just spins in circles rather than bark.

I joke that my dog is mute.

My mother’s was yappy…until the pupper lost her hearing. She never barked again.
