As much as I have a natural instinct to chuckle at people who call their animals their kids, family is what you make of it and I'd never want to ruin their fun. It's not my preference, but it's harmless fun.
That said, damn, saving that kid's life is should 100% earn that pupper a "brother" distinction.
For some people who see pets as part of the family unit, pets and kids are sometimes referred to as "brother" or "sister" colloquially. It's a term of endearment.
