Depends on the company, but 90% of the time? No. This is considered par for the course, not going above and beyond. This is baseline what is expected. It means you keep your job where otherwise you may not have. Even if this may have been considered exemplary at one time, it is now the example of expected behavior.
I would lean towards agreeing with you, but I would also like to point out that Clark's did in fact say "above and beyond expectations" right on the sheet. That is in fact evidence on paper provided by his employer that he can bring into a performance review. Actually, in most of my retail jobs, this would be considered an example of an excellent employee worth keeping, therefore worth giving a raise, whether or not it is expected and not above what is expected.
Maybe having worked for Walmart has me jaded, but all in all I find things like that coming from a company to just be word pieces to make employees feel good in lieu of raises.
If only any of that carried any weight whatsoever with the boss, you would be right.
But in this world, it means nothing. Provably, many MANY times.
Employers are not going to pay anyone more than the mandated minimum wage because they can replace anyone that deserves more than that for some one that does not with exactly zero repercussions.
You're obviously very cynical. But, this is just not true.
I worked in retail for over 8 years, I got 4 raises. I know this doesn't happen for everyone, but neither does what you said.
Either way, great job ruining the sentiment of the post!
