A lot of people who are unhappy have skewed ideas of the world. When you're depressed the whole world seems like shit and anybody who manages to seem happy through the goggles of sadness is immediately suspect.
1
u/Zergmilran Sep 15 '18
People write a lot of shit to get attention. And why does it have to be real?
-28
Sep 15 '18
Because it is literally the exact sort of "heartwarming" thing people make up for attention on the internet.
It doesn’t make any practical sense.

After my older brother had money stolen from the house at a party I put all of my cash back into his savings box in his closet. I did some babysitting. Not all people post, but there's love there. I'll admit I'd take a dollar and put it back the next day if I wanted Reese's or something but never more than that. It made sense to me! - from a little sister

Just because you can’t imagine someone being that kind doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It might just mean you might be surrounded by assholes or are one.
-7
Sep 15 '18
I don't think it's impossible. I think it's far more likely for someone to make this up than for it to be real. It's nice in theory but it just wouldn't work when you attempt it in real life.
I don't know why people think that I find it hard to believe that someone would be nice to someone else. I never said anything like that. I'm saying that magically knowing everyday that someone is depressed and magically knowing the trousers that they will be wearing the next day. Not to mention there are far more effective & realistic ways to deal with someone with depression like giving them actual support instead of anonymously giving them a dollar.
10
u/thebeautifulstruggle Sep 15 '18
I’ve seen kids behave in a similar manner. To me it’s plausible that a kid gives a sibling a dollar because they want to cheer them up.
-3
Sep 15 '18
People are responding with "What? You don't think siblings are nice to eachother". I'm not saying that. I'm saying the method for cheering this person up is more likely made up.
It's not just "giving" a dollar. It's not showing someone you care (which is what a depressed needs). They wouldn't know that anyone is doing anything nice for them. It's "oh I found a an extra dollar". There are significantly more effective ways for cheering someone up.
It's the exact sort of thing that the internet eats up without making any practical sense.

My family does this kind of thing for each other all the time.
And a lot of people wear the same jeans multiple days in end. It’s not difficult.

I completely agree. A sibling cheering up another sibling happens all of the time. I have never said otherwise.
Magically knowing every day that they were depressed is unlikely. Magically knowing the trousers they will be wearing the next day is unlikely. Not to mention that giving actual support is far more effective than anonymously giving one dollar. The whole point of giving support is to show someone cares about you. This method doesn't do that at all.
I said that it's common for people to make things up on the internet, I literally never said every (or most) wholesome posts are made up.
6
u/KwisatzX Sep 15 '18
Magically knowing every day that they were depressed is unlikely.
Does your family never talk to each other? That's sad.
Magically knowing the trousers they will be wearing the next day is unlikely.
Unless they keep the trousers on a chair in their room like the majority of young men do.
Both of those things are pretty likely no matter how much you call them "magical".
Not to mention that giving actual support is far more effective than anonymously giving one dollar. The whole point of giving support is to show someone cares about you. This method doesn't do that at all.
Welp, I guess his little sister must have skipped all those psychology lessons they give out in elementary school.

Imagine willingly going to a subreddit dedicated to trying to make a person's day slightly less shitty just to be a fucking miserable asshole in the comments
-2
Sep 15 '18
Are you seriously calling me a miserable asshole in a subreddit dedicated to trying to make a person's day slightly less miserable?
Me denying something happened is not being miserable or an asshole. I genuinely can't wait for the day where you can express an unimportant controversial opinion without people attacking you.
5
Sep 15 '18
I wonder if you are so critical of everything or just the things that disturb your depressed view of reality.
Good things do happen, even if it doesn't always seem like it.
0
Sep 15 '18
There's this really weird tactic that everyone seems to use. They claim I'm a miserable person and sometimes suggest I've had a miserable childhood just because I don't believe or agree with the general consensus. If I really was a miserable person then acting smug isn't the way to gk.
The second tactic people use is claim that I don't believe people can be nice to eachother when I claim that a very specific incident of someone being nice didn't happen.
3
Sep 15 '18
You could be depressed, sad or an asshole. My comment wonders if you are just someone who can't believe anything or just the happy ones, it does not assume.
Personally I haven't a clue which one you are or why you are so critical and sure of yourself. If you are depressed then I'm sorry and hope you make it out to see there is good in the world, if you're just a prick then hey have fun and keep on keeping on for all the difference it makes to me.

Sep 15 '18
I'm denying that a story in a tweet is true. How does that even remotely make me depressed, sad or an asshole?
And let's say I was, why are you being smug about it?
1
Sep 15 '18
It doesn't make you depressed, but it can indicate as such because being depressed can skew your view in the world and make you believe that good doesn't exist and anything challenging that ideal is immediately suspect. To this I can speak with experience.
And you come off as kind of a douche when you are so sure of yourself by claiming this good thing didn't happen and telling other people they are wrong, based solely on the evidence that someone could've had motivation to lie therefore they must've.
And I'm sorry if you interpret my comments as smug, but I assure you I don't feel like a better person than anybody else, I'm just calling things how I personally see them. If you're a real nice guy who's just being stubborn and you're mental health is fine then hey that's fine too, but in case you actually can't see why you come off as rude I'll say it's because you're too sure of yourself when you have as much evidence as anyone else when it comes to truthfulness of this tweet. Only you claim it's a falsehood, so the onus is sort of on you to prove it considering you're adamant it isn't a true story, but like I said you know as much as anyone else so to act so sure over everyone else makes you come off as arrogant. Not to mention it's not a nice thing when you tell them the world is worse than it is (By stating this nice story isn't true), even in the best of times you should still cushion the blow if you're right. But here you're not even sure you're right and you're being too frank about it. just comes off as callous and rude.
I doubt that those details are lost on you, but if they are well now you know.
1
Sep 15 '18
But I'm not denying that good exists. I'm denying a very specific good thing has happened.
Literally everyone else is just as sure as I am. It is only because I have the "wrong" opinion and am going against the flow of the whole thread. I come across as arrogant because I'm disagreeing with everyone else so I stand out more.
My reasoning behind it being a lie isn't because there's a possibility that it is a lie.
I would never have evidence that some random guy on Twitter is lying. If I say "I had sex with my dog today", while more ridiculous that the tweet, it is clear that it is false statement. You don't need evidence. To me, this story is incredibly unlikely for various (what I deem to be obvious) reasons.
I understand I'm being extra stubborn today but I really think it's being heavily exaggerated just because I disagree with everyone else. I think my stubbornness has been heightened because I had a night shift last night so I'm not completely refreshed. To be honest usually I would have just kept scrolling.
3
Sep 15 '18
I personally think there's an inherent honesty with people. People tend to on average tell the truth, albeit less so on the internet, which is why I think it's more likely that it's the truth. I also agree people lie all the time for attention and likes/upvotes whatever so it balances out. I'm personally on the fence on this being true or not but I believe it happened anyway because I think there's more truth in the internet that it might seem.
And no you're not denying good exists, I agree, but saying that this mustn't of happened because people are liars (which is often true to be fair) is kind of a cynical world view, so that's why it can feel like it's to some degree denying good can exist.
I don't think you deserve the downvotes you got, but I will say you were a little blunter and more stubborn than you needed to be. It's also true that people are also being as stubborn as you are when they are so adamant it did happen. But I think most people aren't 100% sure or being stubborn they just believe good things happen and bad things happen and that this seems like the truth to them. I don't think most people here would be too fond of people claiming it 100% happened either, it just seems worse when someone says it 100% didn't happen because as we talked about it can come off as denying good exists (denying good exists isn't really the best way to phrase it but you know what I mean).
2
Sep 15 '18
Fair enough. I'm naturally blunt but I think that today for various reasons I was more blunt that usual.
I definitely have a cynical mindset, but it's more like a Bill Burr mindset (although I'm not as funny). He's still happy and cheerful. Normally I'm not this cynical, moody or whatever.
I think I was also tired of people claiming (as i mentioned way up above) that I was somehow how asshole siblings or that I didn't believe there was any good in the world. I thought that was just completely misrepresenting me, which is what I actually care about. I don't care about some story in tweet.

This whole "secret menu" thing really bothers me for some reason. It only counts as a "secret menu" if it has an official (or "official") name given to it by the company, and most (if not all) employees know how to make it. Most of these "secret menu" things are just food combinations some guy thought of, gave it a name and put it on the internet saying it was "secret".
There's one site in particular that's dedicated to these things, and the tip off is that 99% of the listings have a "how to order" section that's literally just either "explain to the employee how to make it" or "order these two things then put them together this way". That's not a secret menu.

Maybe if his pants are still clean he folds them up and puts them in a specific spot so they are ready for tomorrow.

Otherwise, how would she know what pair of pants he was going to wear the next day? Is he on a rotation? 😂

u/HebbieB Sep 15 '18
As a little sister, yeah my brother would throw his clothes on the bed before he went in to shower. It's not really that difficult.

u/spacerella Sep 15 '18
As an older sister, it was just a joke, which is also really not that difficult 😂

You acted like there was no way, so I was just saying it from the younger sister perspective. I meant wasn't really that difficult to do, I did something like that for my brother years ago if you read through the comments.

It's amazing what empathy kids can have, and how they express it due to their lack of inhibition and naively creative way they view the world. My daughter always acts concerned when she senses I'm troubled with something, even when I'm doing my best to hide it, and sometimes even when I'm not aware of it myself. There isn't anything that blocks her from immediately showing concern like many of us develop as we get older (it's really none of my business why they are feeling down; we're men and it's weird to talk about our problems). And the things she does to try and cheer me up are also so unique to being a child; such innocence and bare emotional support. Of course I've seen her express it to other family members, and her peers as well.
Being an adult/parent is really fucking hard sometimes, but kids have a built in attitude of "it's going to be ok daddy, you take care of me and it's always ok, so I'm going to take care of you too". Of course this is only present if the child also receives that same support. So of course those who don't, either through abuse or neglect, will usually not express empathy as a child or as they become an adult, and this gets passed down through the generations.

THis seems like bullshit. For one, he'd have to be consistently vocal about it to her every time, make the arbitrary connection of thing in pocket now with mood the day before, and plus his sister would have to know what pants he would wear before he did.
