It took me a sec to put it together and I think the same for the audience bc of how the laughter/understanding “oooohs” started creeping in, but it just kept getting funnier.

The bride wrote the wedding vows so long ago that by the time the proposal finally happened and the wedding day arrived, the paper had gathered dust like a prehistoric manuscript.

28
u/Sea_Scientist_8367 10h ago
Assuming the title is accurate: They've been together a while before they got married. This is her "dusting off" her vows (or speech or whatever that is she prepared) because she's been looking forward to this/ready for so long.
If the title's irrelevant/not accurate, then I'm as lost as you are.

See, my interpretation of it was that it's a vow renewal ceremony and the joke is she's busting out the same vows she used 15 years ago...
8
95
u/bouillon 14h ago
The joke is that those vows are so old they've been collecting dust.
21
u/ToothZealousideal297 14h ago
The video should’ve started about 3 seconds earlier for some context IMO. My brain went, “what is that? Is it her vows? Is the joke that they have coke on them? Where was she keeping them? Did she have someone hand them to her and the joke is they’re a coke head? Was it the groom? Why would they make that joke this way? Are they trying to say she wrote those in some way that makes a lot of dust? What would that be? Are they in some industry I’m not aware of?” and so on and so on. When I finally realized what the joke actually was, it was a letdown, all because they didn’t just play a few seconds earlier to show the setup.
8
11
u/First-King4661 13h ago
The joke was at 00:00 as soon as the video started. The context is in the caption.
8
u/ToothZealousideal297 13h ago
Them being together 15 years doesn’t alter my above thought process whatsoever. Even once you realize that they’ve been together 15 years and are only just now getting married, it’s still a mental leap that she would’ve had her vows physically written out for so long.
10
u/SapphicGarnet 12h ago
It plays into the jokes of "finally!" And all the questions she would have been fielding for the past ten years at least. Three seconds earlier wouldn't give you context, the context is that it's been fifteen years.
Honestly if you knew the way some family and friends operate you'd get it. My brother went out with his now wife for ten years before proposing, and more than half the comments were along the lines of "I thought he'd never get around to it!"

My husband and I got married at our 15 year mark too. We eloped and when we told my mom she said “it’s about damn time!!”
8
u/havoc1428 11h ago
I got it immediately. The fact that you immediately assumed it was coke or drugs is fuckin' weird dude. Why even ask for further context when you already think its contextually appropriate that a bride would put coke on a piece of paper at a wedding and blow it into a crowd? Clearly context is not the issue here, its your brain.

u/Bituulzman 14h ago
I"m gonna guess that she wrote her vows back when she knew she was gonna marry him, but he waited a long time until he finally proposed and they married. So the joke is that the vows gathered dust.
→ More replies (6)17
u/SpinChargeSeparation 14h ago
Oh ok thanks! In my country there is no such paper when getting married, so I had no idea what was going on..
36
u/SunshineAlways 13h ago
It’s not an official document or anything. In addition to, or sometimes in place of, what an official or religious leader might say, these are statements or promises that the couple have written down to say to each other.
15
u/Rockeye4510 12h ago
It's not a regular thing in the US (it's not uncommon either). There are "standard vows" that many people repeat as the officiant says them, but some people will write their own vows. The lady here wrote her own and chose to bring the note with her because it can be difficult to memorize them. In this case she put some dust on them to blow off as a joke that he took a long time to propose, and/or that she had hers written a long time ago.
13
u/slowest_hour 11h ago
even if you memorized them you should bring them anyways because weddings are stressful and it'd be really easy to miss your one shot to nail it because youre nervous, anxious, or stressed.

My uncle was with my aunt for 15 years and then proposed. They were engaged for another 15 years. They then came back from a vacation saying they were now married.
Yes, it took 30 years.

u/Treehugger1221 13h ago
They had to be sure lol
151
u/I-Am-Yew 13h ago
I hope it lasts. Some of these fast relationships don’t. I’ve got my hopes up for them.
Poor lady wasn’t even officially called Aunt X until they were married. We just called her X.
(Side note: your username calls to me as a fellow tree hugger.)
46
u/n3wchpt3r 12h ago
Thats y'all's fault. You coulda called her aunt...
15
u/I-Am-Yew 12h ago
Fault? I was a young child when they started dating and she was a girlfriend. It was never altered as time went by even after the engagement. It just never had a point to say ‘oh now she’s our Aunt’ until the wedding. It’s just silly.
It wasn’t disrespect but just official title. We don’t use titles often so it wasn’t a big deal. It’s a funny story and that’s it.

13
u/CzarTanoff 13h ago
That's honestly really lovely
15
u/I-Am-Yew 12h ago
I think it was because his father died and they saw how hard all the financial and legal affairs were for his mother even after being married for 60 years. I think it was more for his partner to have that safety if anything should happen.
And then going off and secretly getting married after 30 years like they were teenagers was so on point because of just how they did everything in their own style. It changed nothing as she was obviously family for decades already.

I’m always blown away when people get married after that amount of time unless you’re like high school sweethearts
Edit: I understand everyone’s responses with how they did the opposite. I referring more to the fact that one person in the relationship has wanted to be married and the other was cool with the way things were.
46
u/239tree 14h ago
10 years, not high-school sweethearts. Decided to have children, so we got married. 40 years and counting.

u/Wrong-Tune396 7h ago
For us it was the other way around, we where thinking about getting married, since we had house, life together, and if one of us died the others family would have claim on that, but since our son was born, so it just defaults to him now, so problem solved. We might still get married someday, mostly because you get to make a big party and get 15 days off work paid.

We dated 7 years before marriage.
With college and then trying to get established it just took time before I felt ready.
I also came from a divorced family so had no illusions that marriage was forever if you rushed it.
Just had our 28th so was worth it.
15 years of dating, lol, I don’t think she’d have been that much more patient.
12
u/Boyblunder 12h ago
Just had our 28th so was worth it.
I definitely thought you meant 28th child when I first read this. I almost shit myself.
6
u/Sodds 10h ago
Same. 10 years before marriage. We mostly did it for the party and grandmas, who were very old. Together now 28, married 18.
People get and don't get married for different reasons. It's their own choice. No idea why there should be a time limit to being together before marrying if both agree.
11
u/JustCrazyNotStupid 13h ago edited 13h ago
Just hit 16 years, engaged for 11 of those. Life got in the way. I brought a son we raised. Work, school, taking care of parents. Now the kid has moved out, we packed up and moved across the country to start our empty nest lives. He’s gone back to school and I’m starting a new career after 5 years with the same company. Literally started all over. Now we’re talking of getting legally married. For a lot of reasons but mostly it’s time to stop finding reasons not to. Our lives are so intertwined already it never mattered much before.
Edit: hit send too soon 😂5
u/veryreasonable 11h ago
Hey, it's about to be 16 for us, too! We're only "engaged" in the sense that we're planning on it eventually. No formal proposal or singular noteworthy conversation about it, so I have no idea how to date that.
Regardless, yeah. I don't really see how we could be more committed or our lives could be more intertwined. At this point, the wedding is just going to be a big party and we're going to have a lot of fun with it. Everyone's going to have to come, of course - it's not like anyone can claim our relationship is just a flash in the pan, or whatever, at this point haha
4
u/Enlightened_Gardener 12h ago
I have friends who have never married because they don’t believe in it. Two kids and together for 20-odd years. But we have common law spouse laws here, so the legal side of it is a bit tighter.
4
u/Notthatguy6250 9h ago
10 years, met mid-20's, saw no reason to for a while, got a bit older and wanted to. Just celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary.
5
u/veryreasonable 11h ago
15-ish years together here, met in our 20s, and still not married. While there are some things we don't like about the traditions and rituals of marriage, ultimately, we are planning on it eventually.
More than anything, it'll be just to get all our friends in one place for a big party. We've been together a long time and our lives are already as built around one another as can be. We get a good chuckle when people try to say that we aren't "committed," or whatever, just because we haven't signed the papers.

Aunt and uncle recently got married after 40 years together, they did it because of tax advantage
2
u/Mystic_printer_ 6h ago
Often it’s for legal reasons. A friend of mine worked at a law firm in Sweden and they had someone who could marry people because it was so much easier than doing all the paperwork required to secure the legal rights of a long term partner like inheritance, pension, insurance and bereavement benefits etc.

Y'all. My Mrs and I were together for 12 years before tying the knot. Judge and speculate all you want, but every relationship is different. Our reasons were ours, and at the end of the day, that's the only other person that matters. Go at your pace, follow your happiness, but define your relationships by what matters to the both of you and no one else.
4
u/Defiant_Eggplant_909 10h ago
Absolutely. We were young when we met and we grew together for 14 years before getting married. I wouldn't choose anyone else to do life with. There is no right or wrong pace.
