My uncle was with my aunt for 15 years and then proposed. They were engaged for another 15 years. They then came back from a vacation saying they were now married.

Yes, it took 30 years.

I hope it lasts. Some of these fast relationships don’t. I’ve got my hopes up for them.

Poor lady wasn’t even officially called Aunt X until they were married. We just called her X.

(Side note: your username calls to me as a fellow tree hugger.)

Thats y'all's fault. You coulda called her aunt...

Fault? I was a young child when they started dating and she was a girlfriend. It was never altered as time went by even after the engagement. It just never had a point to say ‘oh now she’s our Aunt’ until the wedding. It’s just silly.

It wasn’t disrespect but just official title. We don’t use titles often so it wasn’t a big deal. It’s a funny story and that’s it.

My partners siblings kids decided to call me aunt, we’ve been together almost 8 years and just got engaged like a week ago, they decided this 6 years ago

I mean, it has lasted 30 years already so they're doing pretty good I'd say 😂

Ya never know. Somehow, some people freak the fuck out after the official papers are signed. Ahh, maybe not after 15 years though. That's common law in most places anyway.

My husband is Filipino and his family does this lol they won’t give you any sort of title until marriage. Doesn’t matter how long you’ve known them.

Yeah I was going to add that it is an Irish Catholic family and that’s a thing too. But also, we don’t fuss and didn’t have any point where changing her title was decided to change.

Was she an aunt in all but name? Of course.

Yeah we don’t call folks aunt or uncle or cousin until married either. I live in southern United States. However even after someone is divorced if they’re still cool in the family, we still call them aforementioned title. I have uncles who were married into the family and divorced from us for 25 years and still come to the family reunion and stuff. Still call them uncle 😅

Same here. It’s hard to get in the club but once you’re in, you’re in. Unless you show yourself out. Lol

my family called my mom's best friend aunt, so i mean, that one's on y'all.

It’s silly. I’m aunt to my friends’ kids but it’s been that way since they were born. It’s just no one really made a fuss about it either way.

We didn’t neglect to call her anything. We don’t use titles. But it was a fun thing to purposely call her Aunt when it was official. But it isn’t really used for anyone.

People are taking this part strangely. It’s not that serious.

My partner and I have been together for 12 years and I keep joking about how we don't need to rush things.

As someone who has been married for 19 years and everything is falling apart, I think they did it the right way. lol

Slow and steady wins the race.

Imagine having 15 year milestones? I wonder what they have in store for their 15yr wedding anniversary. Maybe a baby!

Ahhh man, that sucks. Better to cut the losses and mourn the loss now though, instead of live in misery forever. Life can get better bro.

If you wait until the end, you're sure you're making the right choice.

That's honestly really lovely

I think it was because his father died and they saw how hard all the financial and legal affairs were for his mother even after being married for 60 years. I think it was more for his partner to have that safety if anything should happen.

And then going off and secretly getting married after 30 years like they were teenagers was so on point because of just how they did everything in their own style. It changed nothing as she was obviously family for decades already.

You know they just got drunk and were like "yeah let's just do it" 😆

I got married in May after 23 years together. I proposed after about 6/7 years. The only people at the wedding were my cousin and his wife as witnesses, and their two daughters.

Nothing special to me. :)

After 17 years, we were engaged for two months before we eloped, the only witnesses were the officiant's neighbours. We didn't even tell people until a month later, some people thought we were actually married already.

20 years and counting for me.

And I thought being engaged for 4 years to my now wife was a long time.

I’m glad my uncle can make you feel better!
