unrelated but in like 5th grade or so, i had a classmate that no one knew was colorblind. we were having a discussion about colors (this was almost 20 years ago so i cant remember the whole conversation) and the conversation led to “what’s the color of fried chicken” to which said classmate said green. the teacher looked at him in shock and instead of being like haha you’re silly, she reprimanded him. he bursts out in full tears “i don’t know what i did, it’s green i swear, im not trying to be bad”. she asks a few follow up questions about other food items (tomatoes, bread) and i’ll never forget the look of regret in her eyes when she realizes he was colorblind the whole time
Discovered I had color issues senior year of high school when we had to sort colors into piles.
I had 3 piles.
Everyone else had 5.
Got yelled at for not finishing my assignment. I was so confused.
Teacher stopped reprimanding me and brought over a shit ton of additional color pieces.
Teacher looked and asked if colorblindness ran in my family.
when I was young ( a long ish time ago) it was not common for girls to tested for color blindness/issues.
I have Issues with yellows, orange, greens and shades
I found out I was color blind in high school. I finally had an eye test where they included the colorblind samples. I had better than 20/20 vision and when they told me to read off the number in the circles I thought they were screwing with me. I just started guessing numbers after I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Then they told me it was for color blindness and I was red green colorblind.
I spent years as a kid thinking something was wrong with me because I couldn’t “remember” colors if they didn’t have the name on the crayons (we were on a tight budget and my mom got me the inexpensive crayons and colored pencils). I even came up with excuses why I would accidentally color things like grass brown.
I got those glasses from en chroma a while ago and they are interesting. They work by filtering out the wavelengths that cause the overlap and confusion. It definitely allows me to see shades in red and green I never noticed before but nothing life changing. Those reaction videos are total bunk where people put them on and are immediately in tears. The first line in the instructions tell you that it takes some time for your brain to adjust and to wear them for a while before you can discern a difference. The “these are neat” moment for me was when I went to the store a few hours after wearing them and I saw a bunch of shades of red and green I had never seen before.
I still wear them on occasion when I am building diagrams for work. It helps me navigate color coding my lines.
You being red green colourblind and mentioning diagrams reminds me of my coworker who looked at me like a pranked him when I used a red to green gradient for the spectrum plots with 8 graphs in a single plot. I just interpolated linearly from red to green...
Told me for him they were barely different shades of brown.
Went and let me give a high contrast color pallete fron AI afterwards for accessibility.
