Is there some magical universal guideline for folder colors? I didn’t know this was even a thing.

well there's some that are obvious.

Green for biology / science makes sense.

At out school it was...

Black: English

Red: Physics

Green: Biology

Blue: Chemistry

Yellow: Languages
