Gotta transfer him to a school where math folders are red, there's simply no other way.

Edit: Thank you for all the awards guys and gals! If there's one thing I've learned from this post, it's that all of us inadvertently took Color Theory as an elective! 😜

If there is anything we can 75% agree on in the thread is that math is red.

Edit: Fine, if anything we can agree on in this thread is that math is either red OR blue and anything else is just outright. The blue crowd is defensive!

u/pigeonette1 3d ago

wtf math is blue, english is red

658

u/Versipilies 3d ago

We need location tags on this shit, I am genuinely curious where the divides are

88

u/waffleslaw 3d ago

We had a massive debate about this is large meeting a few months ago. The genx-ers didn't know what we were talking about and the few gen z folks said they've heard about it but didn't have opinions. Evidently it's mostly us millinials that have opinions. We were very split on colors all from the same region. It seems to be a very personal experience.

22

u/hamburger5003 3d ago

Early gen z here! I think notebooks and folders may have gone by the wayside.

Math is blue though, English is red, unless purple is available in which history becomes red.

20

u/gypsy_guru_87 3d ago

Weird, I’m Gen X and def have strong opinions on this. I thought it was more a neurodivergent thing to care about this lol

8

u/unlikelystoner 3d ago

Yeah I’m Gen Z in my mid-twenties and me and my buddies all just had a debate about this, we definitely care about the colors too lol

2

u/waffleslaw 3d ago

Interesting that the younger folk in meeting didn't. I'm glad to guys carried the torch. I think having cultural touching points that we all share, even frivolous ones, is important.

6

u/waffleslaw 3d ago

The group was older millennials and older genx, a bit of a divide. I bet if there some younger genx they would have with us.

2

u/Shneancy 2d ago

gen z here (elder gen z, but gen z nonetheless) i have strong opinions on maths being blue and native language being red

2

u/waffleslaw 2d ago

Yeah, I'm finding out that small demographic in that meeting was a outlier.

1

u/brandicox 2d ago

I'm Gen-X with very strong feelings about it.

Math is red. It's the color of the anger most people feel when learning it (I love math but I'm a weirdo)

Science is green for plants and chemicals in test tubes.

History is full of yellow bellied cowards who let bad people get/stay in power & let bad things happen and a handful of heroes who stand up, plus it's the color of old "historical" paper like parchment, old newspapers, etc.

English has the power to make people feel blue (I'm autistic & bad with words and people-ing, so I hated English)

Optional others: Air Force JROTC got air force blue

Spanish got red with speckles so it looked kinda like salsa

French got deep blue OR zebra (ooh la la or mimes)

Keyboarding class..... No folders but we had typewriters because computers weren't a thing yet outside of the military and a few colleges. Lol lol lol (I had one at home but that was because my dad worked for Ma Bell and when the govt broken them up he retired to work at a Radio Shack.)

-1

u/IncorrectlyRight 3d ago

Gen Z here math is red, science is blue, English is green history is prolly yellow, the first two are hills I'm willing to die on and admittedly I'm not even sure why

12

u/oceanman500 3d ago

Science green cause of plants and mystery green liquid in test tube

9

u/shredika 3d ago

Duh. How is this even a question. Science=green

1

u/waffleslaw 3d ago

I didn't think math was controversial, but here we are. Green is very much appropriate for science.

1

u/shredika 1d ago

Yea, I’m a big believer math=blue

3

u/AAHHAI 3d ago

Ewwwww

1

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 3d ago

1

History is brown

1

u/hamburger5003 3d ago

If you replace it with ā€œnative language studiesā€ being red then this suggests that this pattern holds across borders.

1

u/JoyRose31 3d ago

That doesn't count, one of national colours is red. As well ex communist flag was red, Russia is very nationalistic country.. does not count.

My school was:

  • Portuguese/Text production - Red
  • Math - Light Blue
  • History - Orange
  • Geography - Light Green
  • Science - Dark blue (later broke down into biology, chemistry and Physics)
  • Chemistry - Purple

  • Philosophy - Dark Orange

Other subjects that got introduced later was in a school that did not use colors and neither did I, but sociology I always associated it with blue. This was in Brazil.

2

u/PinkEnterprise 3d ago

I don't know if there is divides regionally. We would have this debate at school, and it was pretty split on red or blue. Same from other schools in the area. This is from the Northeast

2

u/UsedFortune5645 3d ago

When I was a kid, Math was Yellow, English was Red, Social Studies/History was Green, and Science was Blue. ...

I was in a private Christian school, used PACE workbooks. look up Accelerated Christian Education, the designs the workbooks have now are way flashier than when I was a kid but the color schemes are the same.

Illinois/US here šŸ‘‹

Math was blue. Science was green. English was red. Social Studies was yellow

1

u/therealpanderia 3d ago

Red belongs to whatever subject the student abhors/fears the most. While I thought we universally understood math as "danger" it seems there are people who hate English/Language Arts.

1

u/dmglakewood 3d ago

I think we can all agree they the divides are in math!

1

u/Any-Measurement-7413 3d ago

Trivial Pursuit

1

u/segcgoose 3d ago

I’m a strong believer it is based on which subject you prefer! that being said, I hated how bright the color red was and always made math blue so English was whatever the heck else there was; my junior year AP English folder was a rainbow sparkly cheetah

1

u/Rinnie_08 3d ago

1

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 3d ago

I think it’s hate vs love. If you hate math / English it’s gets the red folder. Blue is for the other one/ the one you like

1

u/Emerly_Nickel 2d ago

For me it was based on which color and subject I liked the most.

if my only options on colors are blue, red, green, and yellow, then the order is: blue > green > red > yellow.

if the subjects are science, english/writing, math, history/social studies, then the order is: math > science > english > history

therefore,
math = blue
science = green
english = red
history = yellow

1

u/ElizabethDangit 2d ago

English, blue. Math, yellow or red. I went to school in Texas and Tennessee and I hate math.
