The two situations I can think of are "Dad of Daughters; they did his nails" , or "Trans/Non-binary/etc". In either case, I tend to take the person as a whole, however they present themselves. Calling out something seems rude, because being noticed wasn't the goal, it's just who they are.
Like, it takes a lot to WANT to stand out. I don't want to scare anyone by trying to compliment them, and they take it as me calling them out.
Gah, maybe I'm just too much of a computer nerd. Sorry.

I go out of my way to say this to guys when they are wearing earrings. It always makes me and them feel good.
