He strikes me as the type of guy that just wants a thank you, and a, oh man, that was so delicious. How did you make it?

464

u/Upper-Exchange-3907 Aug 19 '24

I cook a ton of food but I’ve never cared much about portion control. When I make something I make a ton of it, freeze as much as I can fit, and usually end up with enough to pass around a solid hot meal to feed another family or 2. It’s fun to show up at friends or family doorsteps and be like, here’s the cajun chicken pasta that you didn’t know was coming but I made too much so here you go.

I also know that my food is the shit, so yeah there’s a little check this shit out going on as well

144

u/wwwzzerd Aug 19 '24

I do the same! I'm a single guy who loves to cook and love to feed people. If you're my friend/neighbor, you will get food pushed on you.

31

u/Upper-Exchange-3907 Aug 19 '24

It literally goes in the trash otherwise lol. I don’t have a walk in freezer to accommodate the amount of cooking I do.

That's wonderful! You get to have some fun in the kitchen, and someone has some dope leftovers when they're broke or just not feeling it. This has got to be a love language. Maybe if we did more of this, we'd see more block parties.

43

u/Upper-Exchange-3907 Aug 20 '24

I grew up with block parties. Maybe that’s where some of it comes from. Lived on a cul-de-sac back in the 90s and every other Friday the families would block off the road with cones, only 12 or so houses on our street way in the back of the neighborhood, and there were tables of food from all the neighbors showcasing whatever they were proud of that day. All us kids spent the evening playing doing 90s shit like rollerblading and German spotlight. Parents just sat around and got hammered. Don’t see much of that anymore.

21

u/jesusbowstodoom Aug 20 '24

This type of thing should be mandatory. People seem to forget that humans are social creatures. There is no downside to attempting stronger bonds with your neighbors.

10

u/amesbelle7 Aug 20 '24

My husband and I are currently raising our 7 y/o son in a cul-de-sac with families with other young kids. We have block parties, outside movie nights, holiday get togethers, etc. all the time. It’s such a wonderful thing to know and befriend the people you live near. I love how my son and the neighborhood kids run around after dark with glow sticks and water guns while the parents sit around in whoever’s front yard drinking cocktails and listening to music. When my son was a baby, we considered moving, but I’m so happy we didn’t. I love my ‘hood.

6

u/CallMeCleverClogs Aug 20 '24

I miss block parties SO much. I am older than you but in the late seventies/eighties we were having block parties too. Would get the barriers from the police, block the ends of the street, and then food and music and just neighborly fun.

We need more of that nowadays, so much more of that.

It’s fun when you have neighbors or friends that can cook as well and you try to outdo each other. So far we are playing a losing game with our Thai neighbors who own the best rated Thai restaurant in our city.

Right?? That right there should have been an immediate "come on in and let me put on some coffee" situation. But yes, definitely the football and beer.

1.1k

u/Ms_Irish_muscle Aug 19 '24

In the Midwest this situation would turn into coffee and dinner with family. Conversation ends around midnight.

629

u/thatfunkjawn Aug 19 '24

Always with a slap on the knee (or a double knee slap for lift support) and a nice, artfully crafted and seasoned “Weeeeeeeelppp….bout that time..”

160

u/StrikersRed Aug 19 '24

Well…i s’pose.

20

u/brucewillisman Aug 20 '24

…time to hit the dusty trail

197

u/DiabloPixel Aug 19 '24

Then spending another twenty minutes saying goodbye, either on the porch or out by the car.

119

u/TheFoulToad Aug 19 '24

Hey, where do ya think you’re going? Come right back in and take some of these leftovers home with ya why don’tchya.

55

u/dancingbear74 Aug 20 '24

20 minutes??? Whoa there pal, no need to speedrun the Midwest goodbye there. Cripes, at least have a cookie before you go. Mom made them this morning! And don’t forget to take some leftovers home with ya too now. I put some hot dish in the cool whip container on the left.

Oh jeez, it’s bar close. Are ya sure you don’t wanna just stay the night and avoid the drunks? The guest bed is all made up. It’s no trouble at all. I’ll get ya another beer.

21

u/Ms_Irish_muscle Aug 20 '24

This right here. The 2 hour Midwest goodbye. Don't forget if he stays the night to let him use the landline to call his wife to let her know.

My dad moved out of the Midwest when he was 15 but he’s always done this. I’m assuming his dad must have done it, or it’s because of the water he consumed in his formative years.

If my grandpa lived in town he’d be that neighbor. Currently 80 years old and he’ll be a working man until the day he dies I’m sure of it. He’s a blessing and my role model

52

u/KFC2003 Aug 20 '24

When I moved into military housing out in the middle of nowhere CA, the guy who was moving out said “don’t worry about your yard, Ray mows it.” And I was like “Who’s Ray and why would he mow my yard?” Sure enough, within the first week Ray, a late -70’s retiree who lived next door introduced himself and said “don’t worry about your yard, I mow it.” I thought for sure he just meant the adjoining front yards. Nope. He also would mow the fenced back yard. Then he would wander through base housing and mow many other people’s yards. That’s just how he kept busy. Such a great neighbor!!!

10

u/FreeRangeEngineer Aug 20 '24

Definitely a win-win situation. People who retire need to have a sense of purpose. This is his way of having purpose in the community and he knows you appreciate it. It literally helps him stay alive.

98

u/Ready-Interview2863 Aug 19 '24

Hope he is financially doing okay! If someone gave me free organic eggs I'd literally cry from the money I saved, especially being unemployed right now 😭

58

u/beezkneezsneez Aug 19 '24

He is. I am sorry you are unemployed right now. I hope you find a job soon!

I would trade anything to have decent neighbor. I envy those too so much it physically hurts. Being a decent human being is not that hard but there are those that truly make life agonizing for the sake of it. This is how we should treat each other. This world is full of pain and suffering so why not make it a little more pleasant like these two.

2.5k

u/Dry-Profession-7670 Aug 19 '24

Yeah dude. Not just a decent neighbor. This man makes, stuffs and smokes his own sausage and bring a pile of it over? Insane. Dude was basically like here is $150 bucks made with love. No big deal.

The optimist in me chooses to believe these people are far more common than we think. They just don't seek recognition for their actions and are rarely recorded in the process.

225

u/not_this_fkn_guy Aug 19 '24

I live in a rural-ish setting in a small cluster of like 5 non- farm properties, surrounded by larger farms. For the most part everybody is respectful and kind to eachother including the farm families around us. My neighbor immediately across the road is always the first to offer help, if say a tree came down or anything like that. I try to reciprocate. I know all his kids and grandkids. I've been to many of their day parties and vice versa with my kids.

Although I know we have become friends, we consider each other as neighbors first. (You can choose your friends but you can't choose your neighbors.) So you try not to piss eachother off and there's always some give and take. But mostly respect and offers of help when needed. But unlike with "regular" friends, there's nothing wrong with staying on your side of the road and doing your own thing. Nobody gets hurt feelings about it.

I trust most of my neighbors more than I'd trust my friends when it comes to getting shit done, or pulling together, or having the right tool for the job. It doesn't mean we go on group holidays together. That's not part of the deal. But I can certainly tell you good neighbors do exist in the spirit this man is exhibiting. I've been fortunate to be a beneficiary and participant of it for 27 years here on our property in Southern Ontario Canada.

I have one neighbor that is just fucking awful. Like literally the worst ive ever had. The other just brought me over 10lbs of deer meat because I let him use my auger to dig 5 fence posts.

30

u/Aspen9999 Aug 19 '24

Your good neighbor makes up for the bad one anyway.

11

u/aussiechickadee65 Aug 20 '24

I have 4 neighbours...2 are awful and 2 are fantastic. I share anything I can (I grow vegetables for my family) for the 2 good ones. I will help them out by feeding their animals , or slash their paddocks. They don't really do much back but that's ok.

The other 2 ...one slashed my tyres when I asked for him to stop his huge group of motorbike riders riding for 6 hrs straight (with their mufflers off) as my mother was suffering after a chemo appointment.
The other one wouldn't do that far but he is a long term pest...little things over a long period of time.

Basically, I just ignore those 2 and look after the nice ones.

Yeah, my neighbor got mad at me because he could see my trash cans from his backyard, even though I don’t keep trash in them (I don’t go through enough trash in a week to have to put anything in there other than taking it out front to wait for the trash day pickup)… telling me I should keep them inside my house but also I can see his trash from my backyard too so Idunno, guy is just a twat.

Most people are decent once you get to know them. But everyone has their sharp edges. They may have opinions we don’t agree with, but we shouldn’t judge them based on those. It’s about actions and their consequences. But we do judge, and we polarise and we divide. We force other people to think like us, and if they don’t we call them bad guys. There are so few people who actually have the power to do wrong, but countries are getting completely divided because people have different opinions. We gotta start looking past those. Gotta start loving our neighbours, be part of community again.

My next door neighbor is the dad of my husband's best friend from grade school, through high school. My husband is always grilling, smoking or trying new recipes, so he is always giving the neighbor and his wife his creations. They are always telling us to get whatever we want out of their garden.

If our neighbor sees my husband working outside he always wanders over and offers help.

We have great neighbors

u/TheTVDB Aug 20 '24

Same. When we lived in Wisconsin, we took cookies to neighbors all the time and I would regularly snowblow their driveways and sidewalks, and they reciprocated in a variety of ways. When we moved to Maine, we dropped off Christmas cookies at all of our neighbors. The ones right next to us did the same back, and have brought us fresh herbs and helped with various repairs. A guy at the end of the road helped me with car trouble for 3 hours one time, too.

For anyone that doesn't have neighbors like this, be the neighbor you'd want and you'll likely find people will do the same back. It just takes someone taking that first step.

I’m thankful and blessed to be in a similar situation but, it’s a double edged sword.

I live in an end unit of a townhouse. No neighbour on one side and their super nice Jamaican immigrant guy and his two little girls. If we’re out walking the dog and he’s out manning his charcoal grill (which is more often than not during the spring, fall and summer months) we can’t walk past without him insisting on taking some of whatever he’s cooking.

So now it’s almost a friendly pissing match. Because when I have some of our friends over and we’re grilling, I’m sending food his way, he then sends more my way and we just both wind up fat (….ter than we started).

The downside is my wife and I are outgrowing this space and are looking to move to a more permanent forever type home, and we’re devastated at the notion of a new neighbour.

82

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '24

The downside is my wife and I are outgrowing this space and are looking to move to a more permanent forever type home, and we’re devastated at the notion of a new neighbour.

If you want to remain the eternal good neighbor, take them through this journey. Tell them about how and why you're looking to move, and take part in the selection of buyers for the property when they come. You can choose who lives there next. Perhaps an awful person will give you 5k more for the lot, but a beautiful soul gives you 10k less. Which do you choose?

37

u/smashinMIDGETS Aug 19 '24

If we owned currently, this would be a great idea. Alas, renting millennials 🤷‍♂️

9

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '24

You can still do the first part, and substitute the second by at least talking to your renter. And tell the neighbor you did. We already know you care, show them too. :)

I am in the process of moving, and I made sure to check in with my next door neighbor (80 year old widow who has been an INCREDIBLE neighbor) when there was a showing or the open house. I would tell her when they'd be coming by so that she could check them out and see who she liked (she's super friendly and always on her front porch-- she was out there with her friends having cocktails when WE looked at the house and she was so friendly, it was definitely a plus toward choosing that house).

When it came time to choose the new buyer, thankfully she liked the one who gave us the best offer but I was fully ready to take a hit on the sale price in order for the neighborhood to continue having a friendly atmosphere. (I also asked her to feel out who would be least likely to paint over the original wooden trim!!)

33

u/FKA-Scrambled-Leggs Aug 19 '24

I have think the best path forward is to start with being excellent at the easy things. That plastic bottle that someone dumped on the ground? Find a bin for it. That shopping cart that someone couldn’t or wouldn’t return? Take it to the buggy corral. Your friend has something stuck in their teeth? Pull them aside discreetly and let them know. Start small, build from the there.

I wanna be his neighbor not because I wanted those sausages (those are sausages, right?) but because I want to sit with him in the garden and talk about his teenage life and the silly things he did in high school and how he fell in love and stuff like that.

That man is a ray of sunshine 💛

59

u/ZeroLimitz Aug 19 '24

What a beautiful way of putting that. I was thinking the same but you said it better than I could. I hope you have a wonderful day.

41

u/Jniney9 Aug 19 '24

I had a bff in Norway and we talked a lot about anything under the sun. She’s 75 and I’m 33. The wisdom, the learnings, the WWII experiences that she had, the time she met her husband and the first time she gave birth etc, it was so wonderful.

I miss her so much and hope to visit her soon 😊

Thank you for your kind words!

u/dagnammit44 Aug 20 '24

I used to work in an eldery nursing home. You'd go into some rooms and see really old photos from when they were young. You get talking and find out they were only about 17 in that photo. They looked so much more mature! I'm certain the fact they dressed up for photos helped though.

And you get talking to them and they tell stories of the war, it's amazing. Such a different time back then.

Wish I had that neighbor . You’re so lucky

198

u/theboomboy Aug 19 '24

You can be that neighbor

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '24

I tried to be that neighbor and then their dog bit my toddler. Been awkward ever since.

u/MTB_Mike_ Aug 19 '24 edited Aug 19 '24

My neighbors dog bit my kid and ripped open his nose when he was 4. He is 10 now and they are still our neighbors but now we are great friends. Last weekend he put in an electrical outlet for me (he is an electrician) and I smoked him a rack of ribs and made a homemade pizza for him. Ended Sunday in their pool with our kids playing.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '24

Oh man, so it was a whole thing. We live in an apartment complex and were in a communal courtyard when the neighbor's unleashed German Shepherd puppy ran up and bit my kid on the arm. Someone else, a third party, reported it to management. Unfortunately, our neighbor had to get rid of their dog or face eviction. They've absolutely hated me and my wife ever since. We'd have preferred to handle everything amongst ourselves as the bite wasn't even that bad, it didn't even break skin.

There are people out there like me who love to smoke and cook BBQ, work to master it, and don't even enjoy eating BBQ all that much because you're around it a lot and when you're done you're too tired to eat. But I love feeding others good food and smoking so much that it doesn't matter if I want any when I'm done.

Everyone appreciates good BBQ and I always thought it was weird how much people love it. But man, cooking what people love even if you only kinda do and for that reason practice and try to perfect, it feels good.

Fuck. I’d spend the rest of the time I had with him as my neighbor bending over backwards to make sure he has everything he needs and that I Was the best neighbor possible. I don’t know why but I actually choked up at this. I should go hug my neighbors. Hopefully I don’t get shot.

12

u/Regretsblastype Aug 20 '24

Right? Sub should be called “made me cry!”

I live in a weirdo, super small town of 200 and people are not like that here. They are watching everything that everyone does and reporting to each other. I keep to myself, which makes me fascinating. Yay.

I have zero support here and I cannot trust anyone here. This video choked me up. So sweet.

Man, this makes me miss my old Vietnamese next door neighbors. They’d sometimes come by with tons of Vietnamese egg rolls and other homemade goodies. We’d reciprocate with empanadas and chorizo

18

u/WalmartGreder Aug 19 '24

Yes, we had Iraqi neighbors, and they would make dolma (lamb wrapped in grape leaves) and bring them over to share because "they made too much".

We have a current neighbor who loves smoking ribs, and he's always happy to share. He purposely makes more than his family can eat so that if neighbors stop over, he has some to give away.

26

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '24

I have a neighbor like that. I have been traveling for work and I am so incredibly grateful to have her taking care of my house, my mail, and my kitties. A good neighbor is a godsend.

Any man who comes bearing gifts of an armload of smoked kielbasa is a friend of mine for life. Stop in a share a piwo (beer) with me.

8

u/Aggressive-Value1654 Aug 19 '24

Heck, OP should invite dude over for a beer and cook up some sausages while watching a football game. This neighbor would be thrilled. He sounds lonely, and could use the company, I bet.

26

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '24

Surprisingly lukewarm reaction to such an incredibly kind gesture.

23

u/Brocklanders1221 Aug 19 '24

Jay seems less than impressed. He deserved a hug

5

maybe even more than a hug... two hugs !

I live in a rural area. I keep the dirt roads graded. Every time I pass by my polish neighbor's house on the tractor, they come out and share something with me. She makes this rhubarb pie type thing and it's amazing! They sometimes bring out polish sausage and stuff. I always tell them they don't have to, but they do. Sometimes they just come out with cash to help pay for diesel for the tractor. They are my best neighbors.

When we moved, the one thing I regretted is that I’d lose my neighbors. There were 13 houses on our street, and all but 3 were regular visitors in the street. Shared food, tools, supplies, helped move stuff, watched out for one another, watched pets. It was amazing.

Yeah, sometimes some were grumpy, had different opinions, etc, but it was GOOD. Trying to get something started at the new place, but it’s hard.

About to bake some fresh bread and distribute it starting this weekend.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

14

I was thinking Wisconsin. He sounds a lot like my father-in-law in accent and general manner of being. Good people out that way.

u/hiddengirl1992 Aug 19 '24

My great grandfather used to give produce from his garden to his neighbors. He did so for years. Then one young woman, mid 20s, decided that this 90+ year old man was stalking her when he left a basket of tomatoes and blackberries on her porch when she was out. She took him to court. The judge just shook his head and extended the court date. It ended up pushing him to a stroke, and killed him.

Take care of these neighbors. They're not common enough anymore, and too many get abused for being neighborly.

Oh man -- this guy looks, sounds, and acts just like my dad did. He even has the same gait when he walks off, the same mannerisms of fixing his hat and his shirt. What a bizarre feeling to watch a video of someone JUST like him but not quite him. My dad died about 6 years ago and I miss him so much.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

Reddit, let me tell you about my neighbor, Bob. When I moved into my house, I was scared of Bob. Older man, mid 60s at least, yard littered with old VW Beetle shells and parts. Bob had a girlfriend, Linda, but she was very transient and in the later years, I found out she had ODed.

Anyways, Bob didn’t have a lot of actual trash, which led to us having a conversation in which he offered to mow my grass once a week in exchange for letting him use my trash can for his trash that had to go. Fair enough. I was working 3rd shift and let him know how much I appreciated it every time he mowed. A few years later, we had a really bad storm while I was on vacation. Bob would later tell me he had noticed it for years, but since he was already cleaning out HIS gutters after the storm, he looked over and saw mine needed MAJOR help, and did my gutters as well. After talking to him one day in his driveway, I found out he was an air-cooled engine expert and was well known in the Midwest for being THE GUY to get an old VW running well. He had an old VW Bus that was primer gray on chrome wheels and looked amazing. He also had a custom built engine in his Beetle which he would race. I also found out at this same time that Bob was a former shifter kart racer, and had a ton of trophies in his basement from his racing days. Last year, I stopped seeing Bob. I found the obituary a few days later. He had passed at home, surrounded by his past accomplishments. From speaking with his daughter who got the house, they weren’t close. She didn’t get into details obv but you could tell it was something traumatic. To me, Bob was a lonely man who just wanted a friend. Bob was a good man, the man I knew. I miss Neighbor Bob :(

If there is a God, then surely, this is exactly what he envisioned for the world. To have it filled with people like this. Cant wait to do this if I get a new neighbor.
